Shop Class: [2/8]

Upon entering the Danger Shop, the students will find that it has been turned into a movie theater, complete with comfy seating, popcorn and soda.

"Good Morning class. As some of you may have noticed, I was out of town last Wednesday doing some work for my former employer. Somehow that... uh... "work" was taped using pirate radio technology and mistakenly broadcast during a major sporting event over the weekend. Despite the breach in security, I thought you might like to see how one one can escape a dangerous situation by using the most commonplace items."

Mac then shows the work safe footage to the class.

When it's done, Mac turns to the class and gives each student a Mastercard.

"Each card has only $20.00 on it. Your assignment today is to go to town and purchase five items for your own personal survival kit. I then want you to tell me how each item can be used to escape a dangerous situation and why it would be priceless. Assume that you already have a Swiss Army Knife and duct tape. I'll give extra credit for those people who come up with ten items."

[[ETA: Shop Assignment can be handed in on Monday if you need more time or want to play this out.]]

[First, for the 201 students, here is the link I meant to give you yesterday. If she gets stuck, just click and drag her.]

301--3rd period

"So business and trust. I did a little experiment, a little practical application...and I have to tell you, I was pretty happy." She launches into the tale of how Lucas the record store guy earned her trust. She smiles and pulls out Stevie Ray Vaughn and plays it for the class during the discussion.

"So...we've done trust and business, and trust and S/M/R...how about trust as it relates to emotions?"
and that's a cold shot babe....

*** *** *** *** ***

401--5th period

"I'm going to set you up and turn you loose. There is an inherent power that comes with trust. It's an insticntual bond between parent and child...in theory, and is less fragile than most people assume in an interpersonal relationship. I want you to either go to the library or get online and find evidence of a relationship where trust is either very stron OR has been broken, and investigate the power dynamic of the scenario."

She's kinda fidgetty...like she wants to get out of here, like now...

Zero opens the library and takes up a post behind the desk with a large cup of coffee and a rather questionable-looking romance novel with a centaur and a mermaid on the cover.

"Alright kids, easy class today, just remember to take notes while you watch this."

Autolycus put on a video of a somewhat demented nun talking about Byzantine art.

Today's homework:

Either - Write one hundred words comparing and contrasting Greek and Byzantine art styles OR Find me an example of Byzantine art.

A different slightly demented nun video is playing for the Studio Art students. This one about visual composition.

Homework- I want you each to find me two artworks, one with what you think is good composition, and one with what you think is bad composition. If you can tell me why you think so in each case that would be good but not necessary.

Rita sat behind her desk studying a book entitled 50 Signs of Mental Illness : A Guide to Understanding Mental Health.

Across the board in sparkling purple letters were instructions:

Work on the obituaries.

Do not attempt to be any nationality but your own.

If Nigel van Susteren shows up, he is advised to leave before he finds out what it's like to be a scarab beetle cockroach canary.

The dinosaur-shaped cookies are back. This time with milk for all your dunking needs.

"Last class we talked about general site considerations. Today, we're going to pack for our expedition. Well, sort of.

Obviously, the carrying capacity of the trucks is the most important factor in deciding how much we are able to bring.

It is a lot of work to figure out exactly what to bring and where to pack it in the trucks. And, we can't forget to set aside room for the team members!

Also, we must take into account these six packing rules:

You cannot pack more than the carrying capacity of the truck (or the truck will get stuck in desert sand).
You cannot overload the roof rack (or it will collapse and cause an accident).
You cannot put people on the roof rack (they could fall off).
You cannot put gas cans inside the truck (the smell of gas is not safe or pleasant for passengers).
You must pack the truck emergency kit near the rear door (in an emergency, the tire-jack and flashlight must be accessible).
You must bring enough food for each person each day in the field.

For homework please complete this worksheet- and don't worry, our expedition won't be nearly as long. We'll only be gone for a weekend."
[identity profile] imanaturalblond.livejournal.com
"I want you to talk about your subject," Rita said without pause. "Why did you pick them? And then turn your writings in."

She smiled.

"Let's hope I don't have to light anything up again. And, so help me, if a single one of you other than Mr. Malfoy or Ms. Tyler decides you're British, you will find out what it's like to be an animal of my choosing."

"So. Go."

Josh put down the newspaper and smiled as the history class walked in.

"Last class we talked about the Articles of Confederation. This week," he passed out copies, "The Constitution. And the Constitution? Begins with the Preamble."

The Constitution )

He sat down. "Today, talk about the balance of powers. Someone give an example of a power that the President has, for instance, or Congress, or the Supreme Court, and someone else show how a different branch can check that power." He smirked. "Think of it as a really, really nerdy game of rock-paper-scissors."

Dinosaur-shaped cookies sit on the table next to the sign-in sheet, as well as a pitcher of milk and some glasses (because cookies need to be dunked!).

"I hope you all... enjoyed... the video last week," Tommy says. "Today? I want you guys to talk about what sort of prior experience you have with vehicles. They don't have to be cars. Giant robots, starfighters, boats ships... talk about them and if you think any of your experiences will translate well to automobiles."
[identity profile] imanaturalblond.livejournal.com
"All right. We've talked a lot about lines, and when to cross them," Rita said thoughtfully. "Who determines those lines? Is it always the subject? And what if the subject of the investigation isn't a person, or has no way of communicating their aversion to being profiled?"

She strolled around to sit on her desk. "Where does the reporter draw the line, really?"
[identity profile] prof-methos.livejournal.com
Methos, kindly, has a full spread from Jeff, God of Biscuits spread out. Everything from doughnuts to bagels to cookies. Coffee and soda provide caffiene.

Methos himself is sitting at his desk, working on what looks like a photocopy of an ancient manuscript. He's translating it into a spiral bound notebook. He's frowning and thumbing through several of the pages.

On the board is written:

EXAM 1

Pick three topics and write or handwave 100 words (at least) on each:

- Sumeria
- Egypt
- Crete
- Greece, political
- Greece, cultural

When finished, you may turn in your papers and leave.

NO TALKING.

Josh was grinning when the government students came into the classroom.

The Presidency: So, so cool. )

He sat down. "Okay. Today, I want you to answer these two questions: Who was your favorite president, and would you ever like to be President?"

Sociology of Violence: 2nd Period

Grissom has set up several stations in the A/V lab. Yup, it's video game day. As long as it isn't something that canon-punctures like Final Fantasy, and it's violent, it's here. *handwave* Duck Hunt to Grand Theft Auto.

"I realized I wanted to discuss media with gang imagery, like many video games, in class, and then I realized that perhaps some of you had never been exposed to them before, or actually played a violent video game."

"So for this class, play in groups or by yourself, and I'd like you to write a short essay over the weekend on what your reactions were to the games."

Sociology of the Paranormal: 6th Period

"I hope you enjoyed your research on time travel. Today, you're going to complete an in-class assignment for me. I'd like you to write me a fictional essay, or drabble story if you will, in which you time travel.

You won't be graded on your writing skills, this isn't an English class, but by demonstrating you have read the materials and put some though and effort into your attempt.

I have a handout to assist you."

[OOC: Change of plans due to my RL slamming me, and I'm missing needed information from a handful of you to proceed. Next week!]

"Madainn mhath, class." Camulus looks far too perky for this hour of the morning. Mainly because he hadn't yet seen the posters with which Orlin has been blanketing town.

"Today's lesson is brought to you by the number four. Reading assignments!" He begins handing out books. "For the next class, I would like you all to have read the story of The Destruction of Da Derga's Hostel."

Books handed out, he produces a large map of ancient Ireland. "We'll be focusing on Irish legends because the mun hasn't covered Scottish yet and is afeared of the Mabinogian so it will be necessary for you to have some background information. We'll begin with the physical geography of mythical Ireland.

"The Irish word for province is 'coiceda', which means 'fifths'. It's related to the modern Gaidhlig for five, 'coig', and many other of the cognate words and their derivatives - like the French 'cinq'. So, coiceda. However, there were only four provinces of Ireland. Tradition holds that there was originally a fifth province, located in the centre of the country, which was absorbed by one of the others, probably Mumu." He taps the map. "In the north is Ulaid, modern name Ulster. You'll recognise them as the focus of the Ulster Cycle of stories. In the south is Mumu, modern name Munster. Connacht in the west, which retains its name, and Lagin in the east, which became Leinster. The mythical fifth province was Mide, which lends its name and location to the modern County Meath.

"Ulaid and Connacht were at war with each other, the most well-known story of this clash in the Tain Bo Cuailgne, or the Cattle Raid of Cooley. Ulaid's capitol was at Emain Macha and ruled by Conchobar or Conner. Its great hero was Cu Chulainn. Connacht's capitol was at Cruachu and its king was Ailill, and its queen was Medb, who is said to be the daughter of the king of Mide. She was at least a euphemised goddess and had a large role in the reign of the province. Mide itself is the province of the fey folk, the site of many of the burial mounds, and the home of Temuir, or Tara, seat of the high kings of Ireland.

"This information really only becomes important during one of the four cycles of Irish mythology, the Ulster Cycle. The other four cycles are the Mythological Cycle, the Kings Cycles, and the Finean or Oisianic Cycle. These are, of course, modern appellations and divisions. Characters and motifs cross over from one to the other. We will be covering each cycle, starting with the Mythological, which deals mainly with the exploits and deeds of the Tuatha de Danaan, the fairy folk. The Kings Cycle is the historical tales, myths and legends that have grown up around real kings of Ireland.

"The Ulster Cycle is comprised of the epic Cattle Raid of Cooley and its companion tales, telling the story of the great Ulster hero Cu Chulainn and his battle against the entire army of Connacht.

"The Ossianic Cycle, also known as the Finean Cycle, is the mun's favourite is the collected stories of Fionn mac Cuhmall - more commonly known as Finn McCool. His son, Oisin, was supposedly the bard who collected these stories and then handed them off to Christian monks before he died.

"Alright, that's it for today. Please have that read for next class. Any questions?"

Today's School Announcements occur around 7:30 pm. Dewey slept in today.

"Hey, hey, hey! Today's announcement is simple. I need myself a student director type for the school musical. Gimme a ring-a-ding-ding on my el telephone, and we'll be in business. Just leave your name and a short message on why you think you'd be good for the job, m'kay? That'd be rockin' like Dokken.

Hey, it's not even Eight yet. I'm early today kiddos! I... oh wait, that's P.M. isn't it. Well then... I'm just gonna put the microphone down now. Hope you all had a good school day. Today's announcement was brought to you by the fellows Gilbert and Sullivan. For I am the Very Model of a Musical Director Guy."
[identity profile] charlieeppes.livejournal.com
"Next Wednesday, we'll - well, you -- will be having the first test of the year!" Charlie beams at the students over his coffee cup. The students may not share his enthusiasm. "So today you will read some and Friday you will look at what we've done so far in class."

As usual, there is breakfast on the table for those who want.

Beginners
100 words on the topic of your choice in History of Mathematics.

Intermediates
100 words on the Mathematician of your choice.

Advanced

"Upon the occasion of my being 'adorably snuggly', I have nothing planned for today mostly because Rhi's got homework to do. For Monday, I want you to look over any work of fiction relating to someone else's project. So that we won't have two people focusing on the same thing, here's who's going to look at what."

He writes on the whiteboard:
Sam: The Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain
John: Drug Culture
Jack: The Kennedy and King Assassinations

"Then we're going to discuss with each other--crazy concept, I know--what we thought about each of these things and how they related to what we already know about the topic. Sometimes you can get a lot out of fiction, but remember that it IS exactly that, and some things might not be true.

"You're now free to go to the library and research, or to ask me questions. Also, if you get a chance, take a look into fictional representations of paradoxes. Remember--films are fine, as long as they aren't documentaries, so if you run out of time, you can always go to that. Try to actually read a book first, though."
[identity profile] mrdmacleod.livejournal.com
Duncan waits for people to sign in before starting. He's not grim, but he is more serious than usual. "Okay, now that we've had the weapons out...let's see how to take the weapons away. Looking for volunteers again, guys."

He has practice knives up front, wooden.
