Karla had promised the class no final last week and she had no intentions of going back on her word for that, especially after the weekend the island had just had. They were meeting in the Danger Shop for their last class, though the food and drink from JGOB and the Perk were all real enough. The Danger Shop was programmed to look like an amusement park, complete with rides and games, though there was one pavilion tent sitting rather prominently in front of the midway.

"I hope you've all gotten some ideas on ways to avoid or defy whatever expectations you're facing in the future. Whether it's just carving out a little more room for yourself under the weight of your parents' wants or deliberately turning your back on whatever fate has in store for you, I wish you all the best of luck." Karla toasted the class with a cup of tea, giving them all a smile. "For the next hour, feel free to ride the rides and play games of skill to your hearts' content, though any prizes you win will be unable to leave with you. But for those who are interested, I've programmed another guest."

The tent flap opened to reveal an older woman standing there. "This is Helene--sorta--my mentor in the Hourglass. As a Black Widow, she is capable of seeing into the future." There was more than just simple Damger Shop protocols involved with that, but Karla saw no reason to get into that. "Black Widows are the caste of dreams and prophecies. For those who are interested, she'll take a glimpse of into your future and tell you what she sees." Helene didn't look much like an amusement park fortune teller; she was dressed sensibly, in sturdy blues and grays, with no shawls or turbans in sight. And she made no grand pronouncements or tried to entice anyone in to see her, she simply nodded at the class and returned into her tent.

"Regardless of whether you want your fortune told, have fun for the next hour and perhaps I'll se some of you next semester. Either way, I wish you best of luck for whatever life holds for you."

Ever since setting foot on the island today, Karla had felt...uneasy. Her Black Widow senses were tingling, but not in a way that suggested imminent danger. More like something kept poking her in the back of the neck to make sure she was paying attention, but giving her no insight to what she should be paying attention to. It was incredibly aggravating, to say the least. But what was it? Nothing seemed out of the ordinary for Fandom. Maybe she was just antsy because Decembers were traditionally a fraught time on the island?

Who knew? Until whatever-it-was popped out of the woodwork, it wasn't Karla, much to her annoyance.

"Welcome back to class," she greeted her class. "For those of you who celebrated the holiday, I hope it was a good one for you. For those who don't, I hope you enjoyed a relaxing few days off. Today is our last class together, apart from the exam which I can tell you already isn't going to exist. This isn't the kind of class there's a test for. One day when you're figuring out what you want to do with your life, you'll either be able to use some of the things you learned in class to use or you won't. That's pretty much the best I can do for you. With that in mind, I'd like you all to look back over the classes we've had together and ask questions you might have about the whys and wherefores."

Granted, any question about why she had them do any specific thing was going to be turned around back on them ("why do you think I did?"), but she'd be willing to help them get to an answer, at least.

"Is there anything else you'd like to talk about? Like me to cover in quick detail over the next hour?" She'd had more to say on her way in, but that damn distracting feeling of something happening soon, maybe was making it hard to focus.

An email had gone out to the class the night before informing everyone to dress nicely and to wear something warm as they'd be meeting by the Causeway today.

"Depending on your destiny, odds are good that you're going to be personally responsible for the well-being of others. Some of those people will be easy for you to remember: the vocal, the well-off and powerful, those who serve directly beneath you that you see and interact with frequently. But those aren't the only people who depend on you and sometimes it's very easy for people to slip between the cracks, to go unnoticed and become forgettable. Those people are, of course, usually the ones who need your support and concern the most. It's a sad truth that the people who need help most are usually the ones in the least position to ask for or receive it."

She began passing out maps of Baltimore with several buildings marked off. "Today, however, we're going to be remembering those people and doing our best to assist them. Your next hour is going to be spent volunteering--though I'm sure you can feel free to stay a little longer if you don't have class immediately after this. As a reminder though, today isn't about you and and how good you feel about yourself afterwards. These people aren't learning experiences or character building exercises. You're there to see how you can help make their day better. It's a very different mindset to go in with, which you can feel free to think about for next week's class."

When the class arrived they'd find a nervous Kaylin at the front of the class. "Karla wasn't feeling well today, so she asked me to run the class. Which was probably a huge mistake because seriously, no one wants me trying to teach them anything. Except maybe pickpocketing, which... I'm going to pretend I didn't just say - it's just 'cause I'm nervous. Anyway..."

"So, this weekend was crazy and it was capped off by another bout of random singing." Karla was torn between empathy--because boy had she been there--and amusement--because she hadn't been there this weekend. Just another facet of Fandom life. "In deference to your probable need to hide under something or drink until you forget, I thought a slightly easier class would be appreciated today."

Plus, if she inflicted another class like last week's on her students, some of them might get up and mutiny.

"We don't have time to watch the full movie, but today I'll be showing you some clips from Jesus Christ, Superstar, a musical I got into during my own days as a student. For those of you not familiar with the story, the movie depicts the last few days of Jesus, a major religious figure of Earth. According to Christians, Jesus is the son of God, the creator of the universe and everything in it, who was born to a human woman for the sole purpose of being a sacrifice. If you're curious, I have some handouts where you can read about Jesus and his life and stuff. I'm not from Earth and I nearly got a group of friends kicked out of church one Christmas Eve--" sorry Sookie "--so if you have questions, read the handouts and then go home and ask Wikipedia. It's a far more reliable source than I am."

In fairness, the musical made it really hard to believe that Judas wasn't Christ's bitter ex. Ben has agreed with her whole-heartedly the first time they'd watched it.

"In this movie, Jesus knows that he must soon be sacrificed for the souls of the people on Earth, but he is understandably conflicted about this. It's one thing to intellectually understand that your career as an itinerant preacher is going to culminate in your death, it's another thing to accept this as happening at some point in the next thirty-six hours or so. Furthermore, Jesus is surrounded by people who all want him to do different things. Simon, one of his chosen companions, wants Jesus to use his celebrity status to urge the people to throw off Rome, who has occupied their country. Judas, Jesus's right hand man, wants him to stop preaching for fear that his claims of being the son of god will get them arrested by the priests and Roman soldiers. He is ambushed by a horde of lepers who nearly overwhelm him with their demands to be healed. Jesus is often alone, even in the middle of his closest friends, realizing that none of them seem to truly care for him. The crowd that cheers and adores Jesus in the opening scenes turns on him and demands his death by crucifixion by the end. The movie follows Jesus as he struggles against the role he believes he is destined to fulfill, going through many of the stages of grief before finally accepting his role as martyr."

"Sometimes you fail."

Karla looked over her class, assembled in the Danger Shop, and slowly shook her head. "That was one of the hardest lessons I ever had to learn. Sometimes you fail, and sometimes when you succeed, the cost is so high that it wasn't worth paying in the first place. For a lot of you, this is going to be a tough lesson to learn--especially here at Fandom. No matter how bad things get here, somehow it always works out in the end. When I was a student, all of reality collapsed. I lost friends, respected teachers, my home. My boyfriend snatched me up and threw me so that I'd escape the great onrushing Nothingness. I survived, but he was taken. I had to say goodbye to some of my best friends as they watched reality unravel before their eyes and then I had to go and add their name to the list of the fallen outside of the school gates." Her voice quavered for a moment; even years later, remembering the last days of the Nothingness hurt. "In the end, it was just a handful of us living in Special Collections--and yet, from that, we managed to jumpstart reality and bring everyone back. Fandom has been invaded, attacked, and changed countless times. Those of you who have been here for awhile likely know what I mean. Those of you who are new will find out. But in the end, we always come out on top."

She smiled wistfully for a moment. "But that's not what happens in the real world. In its own way, Fandom is a happy fantasy where there are very few long-lasting consequences for even the most horrifying events. Things aren't permanent here. On the one hand, that's a kindness. We all deserve a few years where the worst things will fade away, leaving little more then scars and nightmares. On the other hand, it makes going out into the real world so much harder. You go back to places where actions have lasting consequences and the dead don't come back to us on Monday morning with a relieved smile. When you leave Fandom, you will find yourself in positions where you will lose and those losses will haunt you. Even if you can make up for them, there's no going back to the way things were, the way you can here."

Looking at them, Karla tried to meet the eyes of every individual student. "Some of you will be able to escape whatever destinies you've been given. Some of you won't be so lucky. And some of you will try to fight every step of the way and still end up exactly where you said you didn't want to be. But losing doesn't have to be the end of things. It's how you lose and what you do afterwards that matter."

She paused for a chance for people to share their feelings, if anyone was so inclined, and then murmured a command. The classroom image dissolved and the students found themselves in a large building, filled with some kind of indoor tent city. It was filthy in here and it stank; too many people in one space and not enough facilities. People were dirty and dispirited, their faces pinched with hunger and tight with fear. Here and there voices were raised in anger, loud disputes over a bottle of water, a claim to space, the virtue of someone's mother. The floors and walls were made of dirty concrete and the windows were boarded up. Over the echoing din of people, moans could be heard from the outside. "You'll all be alone when the simulation starts," she said. "It's individualized to each one of you. If you make it to the end of the class period without becoming a leader, you win. Ready? Let's begin." And with that, she vanished, as did every other student, leaving each student seemingly alone in a warehouse full of people.

Their teacher was present when the class filed in. She was also dressed a lot more casually than normal, in a pair of beat up jeans and a ratty sweatshirt, both several sizes too large for her. Both pieces had been unwittingly donated from Jono's wardrobe back during his Decibel days, and certainly beat the several pieces of maternity wear she'd seen in a shop in Sidra.

Ugh. Pastels.

"Sorry for the last minute cancellation," she said once everyone had filed in. "I passed a law about hunting Arcerian cats..." She trailed off and shook her head. "Never mind. If you're really curious, you can talk to me after class. The upshot is that I missed class because a bunch of aristos get pissy and threw temper tantrums that I had to sort out. Word of warning for your futures: if you're ever in a position of authority over people, expect to get called in to referee fights. It's highly unlikely that you'll get them to agree, so if it doesn't happen, don't be overwrought about it."

See? Helping you set expectations to possibly defy later! Teacher of the year, right here.

"But rather than looking at the future, we're going to focus on the present today. There are a ton of expectations that you are facing just by being who you are, in whatever society you're in. There are expectations of behavior based on your age, your sex, your gender, your race, your socio-economic status, perhaps your religion or belief system. There are the expectations that your family has for you, your friends, your teachers here at Fandom, and people beyond that. Perfect strangers may have expectations for you, based solely on your appearance and their own internalized beliefs and prejudices. Some of those expectations make sense in society. Here at school, we expect you to be academically honest, fairly independent, and possessing enough sense to get in out of a rain of caramel sauce." Unless there was a fire drill scheduled, sigh. "We also expect you not to do things, like harm your fellow students or the people in town--at least, not without a damn good reason."

"But not all expectations are healthy, rational, or beneficial. Many of them can be hurtful to be on the receiving end of, and are generally no picnic to have in the first place. Not to defend racists, but it's got to be exhausting, wandering around afraid of people who don't look or think like you. So, today, a discussion class, focusing on the expectations that define your life right now, and whether or not you defy them and the consequences of doing so." She spread her arms. "For example, this is what I wore when dealing with audiences this morning. My Court was not best pleased with me, and I have a very stuffy Steward waiting for me to get home. But I was comfortable, so I'm thinking his lecture will be worth it. But did I lose anything in the eyes of my courtiers, or in your eyes by not being more appropriately dressed? Let's discuss."

Today, class met in the Danger Shop! So exciting, even if Karla was the only one who was excited about this. Hey, it was her first time on this side of things, forgive her. The room was mocked up to look like a version of Fandom's salle, if the salle on the island came with a craft store, a clothing outlet, and a bunch of desks in the front. No worries, kids. This was all VERY normal.

"So, Parents' Weekend is over, which means that you've all successfully survived the worst planned event of the year." Sure, there might be murder carnivals and reality erasure, but those weren't planned. At least, not by the administration. Though if Karla ever found out otherwise, she was going to demand a raise. "No matter whether you have a family or not, Parents' Weekend is usually a tough time. If you managed to have a decent weekend with--or even in spite of--your family situation, congratulations. If you're not that lucky, please know that I empathize."

She used to get visits from the High Lord of Hell and his obnoxious son. She felt your pain, y'all. And there was a whole section of class devoted to sharing your feelings, if anyone was of a mind to.

"We all have a past that has shaped us, whether its years of listening to our families and having their opinions mold our outlooks, or specific instances that changed who we were. I was nine when my parents were murdered and so much of who I became and the choices I made stemmed from that incident. In fact, that's what started me on my 'destiny', as it were. Odds had always been good that I would one day become Glacia's Territory Queen, but at that moment, I also stepped into the role of Glacia's future savior, too. In a completely political and non-religious way, just to be clear."

This class already had a candidate for 'Most Likely Unwilling Messiah.' Hell's fire, so did Kaeleer. Karla didn't need to throw her hat in that ring, thanks.

"Your pasts are a series of events that have made you who you are. Both the good and the bad alike have affected the people you've become and without them, you wouldn't be the person you are now. The problem is, even if the bad events are still bad events. You might not like who you are now, or you may not think that what you've gotten out of your past is worth all the hurt its caused, and dealing with family can bring all that right back up to the surface. Even in normal families, there are secrets and hurts and lies that can lead to their own traumas."

"So, today, we're going to let some of that out. As you can see, there are plenty of wooden practice dummies available. You're going to rifle through the moddable supplies and make your dummy resemble an element of the past. For me, I made this one." She gestured to one of the dummies that was already dressed in Edwardian-style clothing, padded on the inside to make the dummy look a little more rotund. There was a piece of paper that said 'Hobart' that was attached to the forehead. "You might wish to make ones that look like parents, ex-friends, or people in power from your own world. You might also take a slightly different approach, as this is personal and you may not want everyone in the room to know what you're carrying with you. Or you might not be comfortable with beating the stuffing out of an effigy of a real person, especially not one you're kin to. 'Deception' might be better for you, or 'poverty' or 'religion.' My fiancé might have dressed his dummy up in a lab coat and called it The Mutant Cure, or like a politician and called it The Mutant Registration Act. Those choices are just as valid as my dummy uncle. This is for you, so as long as you have some strong, personal connection with your effigy, make it whatever you want. Once you've finished setting up you dummy, grab a weapon from the walls and start working some of those frustrations out. I would suggest the bats and clubs, as the dummies will last longer, but that's up to you. And if you feel like finishing with something a little stronger?"

The Hobart-dummy shattered into a cloud of splinters and Karla grinned. The Danger Shop wasn't entirely like having her Craft back, but it was still fun.

"Do your thing. Catharsis is beautiful."

"Last week, we discussed how having a friend or two could keep you true to yourself. Finding a true friend may be harder than you think, especially once you've gone on to whatever destiny awaits. That's because the key element of that relationship is trust and being too trusting is dangerous. Trusting the wrong people can cost you a lot. For some people, it leads to their downfall. For others, it has led to their death."

"So, I was going to save this lecture for a few weeks, but it seems that the fates have conspired on several fronts to make this topic fit very well today." And if her eyes happened to rest on one or two students in particular, she'd just say that it was solely coincidence. Really.

"Know thyself," Karla said as the students entered the classroom. "The full name of this class is Defying Expectations: Staying Yourself in Spite of Destiny, which is useful only if you know yourself. Whatever your destiny or lack thereof, you're going to have to deal with people who want you to do things that further their best interest. These things may have nothing in common with your aims, your morals, or your best interests, but that won't stop people from asking. Or telling. Or demanding. If you are in a position of authority, people may try to convince you around to their way of thinking, persuade you that their idea is the best, or lie and and connive to get what they want. Self-interest is a pretty strong motivator for damn near every human on the planet."

"But before you can plan around the people who are trying to convince you to do what they think is best, the first thing you have to do is figure out what you do. I'm not trying to say that your instincts are infallible--Mother Night, if you take anything from this class, please do not let it be that--but if you know what you believe, you can figure out how much of a deviation from your personal code someone else's suggestions are." Karla shrugged and gave the class a wry smile. "Whether or not that deviation is a good thing is a topic for another class--and it might be. Odds are good that in your lifetime, you're going to meet people who know more about a given situation than you do, have more experience than you have, or who are your moral superiors. Listening to them and adjusting your ideas may make a positive difference in a given scenario. However, to better assess what the people around you can offer, first you must know where you yourself may stand. Today, I've got a bunch of moral and ethical scenarios for you to ponder and decide what you would do. Most of these scenarios are morbid, but if they were easy questions, they likely wouldn't be moral ones."

"Morning," Karla said, giving her class a wan smile. It was hard to be convincing when you were on your third straight day of roiling nausea. Not throwing up, just sourceless, endless nausea. "Now that introductions are over, we can start digging into the meat of this class." Bad choice of words there, Karla.

"Destiny is an intimidating topic. Even if you're thrilled about whatever is waiting for you, it can be scary because you're talking about something that can set the tone for your whole life even if it doesn't take up your whole life. Not having a destiny can be just as scary; while you have more freedom to decide what you want, there's more uncertainty, too. Sometimes it's comforting to know what's waiting for you; even if you hate it, it gives you something to work against. Every week, we're going to spend the first part of class just talking about how you're feeling about things." She wrinkled her nose--that actually sounded way more touchy-feely than she'd intended. "I don't mean we're going to sit in a circle and hug our problems out, but sometimes it's just good to talk. Whether you're working towards your destiny, against it, or just figuring out what the Hell you want to do with yourself after high school, this is a chance for you to ask questions, get advice from myself and any other students, or just bitch that your parents are sending you college applications and you're only a sophomore."

Karla had gotten to the island early today so she could hunt down the moose in the office and clear up a few things. Little things like: how had she become a teacher? Where was her class? When was her class? What was her class? Did the school normally just inform random people that they were teaching now?

She'd gotten a shrug to her first question, a copy of her class roster for her second, third, and fourth, and an eyeroll for her last. She hadn't even known moose could roll their eyes. But the roster had the really relevant information, like what the Hell her class was even supposed to be about, so overall the visit was a win. A few hours in the Perk had been enough to cobble together something to get her through her first class, which, if memory served, was all introductions anyway.

At least with the time difference between Kaeleer and Fandom, she'd have two more weeks to put together the rest of the class--and break the news to her Court that she was now teaching on the island.

Good times.
