"Good afternoon, class." Sophie smiled brightly at Max's students, two boxes of J,GoB's best pastries on the desk behind her, looking completely benign. "I understand you have a Final today. I'm afraid Professor Maximus won't be joining us until the very end, though. He's been unavoidably detained."

By a bottle of tequila, two supermodels and a stripper, and a delayed return-ticket on Portalocity. Bless them.

"So since I don't have access to his final test, I'm afraid you'll have to, mm, 'wing it'. Please write down what you've learned from this class... and then every way you plan on twisting that knowledge to your own advantage in the future."

There. That was a good test of how well they'd understood the concepts.

"After all, it's the applicability that matters, isn't it?"

Max had had an... interesting weekend, and he he bet his students had as well. "Well," he began with a grin, "it's been an interesting semester. And it's been a pleasure to have all of you in this class." Yes. Even you, difficult women. "But we're almost done. Which means its almost time for your comprehensive final exam." And suddenly Max's grin was downright evil. "It's going to be extremely detailed, and likely rather difficult, so today we're going to be going over any questions you might have. Is there a topic we've discussed that you'd like to look at in more detail? Or something you had questions about? Now's the time to ask."

"Additionally, since part of the exam is going to be about practical applications, we're going to discuss which techniques and situations we've discussed this semester have turned out to be useful." Hopefully the answer wasn't going to turn out to be 'none of them'.

"I could ramble on and on with instructions for today, but we only have so much time and I already suspect we won't get to cover everything you need to know." It was going to be a brutal exam, after all. "So, let's get to it."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
"The semester is almost over, and we've spent most of it learning what I know from my own experience with difficult women would turn out to be useful to you one day. But we all come from different worlds with different expectations and cultures and so on, so I would be a poor instructor if I didn't take that into account for this course." Max quirked an eyebrow at his students, as if daring any of them to suggest he was a poor instructor.

"And since all of you are quite bright, I figure the best way to do this is to simply let each of you have five minutes."

"I've worked up an order," well, he was actually just going to point at people at random until everyone had gotten pointed at, but whatever, "so when I call your name, come up to the front of the classroom and teach us something about difficult women that we haven't covered yet. In order to make sure we get done in time, let's go ahead and get started. I wouldn't want anyone to get short-changed on their five minutes, after all."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
"Well," Max began without preamble. "This past week has certainly been interesting."

Apparently Max was pretty good with understatement. "And while I'm not exactly looking forward to a repeat anytime soon, recent events do present us with an interesting opportunity." Max paused to survey his students thoughtfully. "It turns out that you can learn a lot about the people you know, and about yourself, in stressful situations. We've spent this semester discussing ways to deal with difficult women, and some of you have been, to various degrees, dubious of the usefulness of such skills."

"It is possible that during this week, you've changed your mind. Perhaps you had to deal with a difficult woman out there in the fog. Or perhaps one helped you out and you've begun to realize why simple avoidance is a poor choice when it comes to dealing with them. It is, of course, possible that your stance on things hasn't changed at all, of course, but certainly some of you have had to rethink some of your positions."

"So today we're going to share those stories." He cocked his head slightly to one side as he eyed his students. "And don't think that just because you haven't changed your opinions that you get to avoid sharing. If you didn't learn anything particularly new during the week, then you'll need to talk about what you did and speculate about what the impact that adding a difficult woman to the situation might have had for you."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
Max was frowning slightly as he walked into class. That fog seemed somehow out of place. Especially given the whole 'otherwise decent afternoon' part of the day. He also kept getting that itching-between-his-shoulder blades feeling. He was probably over-thinking things. And, anyway, he had a class to teach.

"Last week we talked a bit about having difficult women in subordinate positions. Some of you," like Arthur, "have experience with this, but it seemed that most of you didn't. This is probably because you're all young, and that means you don't tend to have anyone in subordinate positions. But that's going to change. Even if some of you don't seek out positions of leadership, you'll find yourself in situations where you're in charge anyway." Max wasn't sure why he looked pointedly at Mat. It just felt like the right thing to do here.

Difficult women respond poorly to direct applications of authority )

"Now it's activity time. Split up into pairs and each of you take turns playing out the roles we've talked about today. Try to draw on your experience with difficult women, both good and bad, to help you act appropriately. We're trying to help people get better at this, so the more realistic you can make things, the better. Now get to it."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
As he walked into class, Max looked around at his students thoughtfully.

"We're now a little over two thirds of the way through this semester, which means that there are only a few classes after this one. I'm going to go ahead and give you your homework assignment for today now so that we don't have interrupt discussion for it later. I've tried to teach you all as much as I can on the subject of difficult women because living with them is important." Max grinned. "In large part because living without them is supremely boring. But in the short time we've had, there's just no way I can teach you everything there is to know on the subject. If there's a specific question or situation that you feel I haven't covered well enough, let me know. There are still a couple of weeks left and I can shift my plans around for the upcoming classes."

Max rolled his shoulder slightly to loosen them up. "And with that out of the way, let's get down to today's business."

"I hope you remember some of the discussions we had back at the beginning of the semester about how to deal with a difficult woman who is in a position of authority. If you need a refresher see me after class. Anyway, it turns out to be almost equally difficult to deal with such women when they are subordinates. Even when you're the one officially in charge, some people think they're the ones who should be because they so obviously know what you should be doing." And just because they were often right about that was no reason to let them take over.

"One of the reasons this situation is difficult is that many of the techniques that you can employ when under the authority of a difficult woman, a difficult woman can employ when under your authority. Subtle resistance, minor delays, careful suggestion and guidance. When you're in a hurry to get something done, all of these can be highly problematic the timely completion of your goals. That will be our topic for this week and the next."

Looking over his students once again, Max nodded to himself. "This week we'll be discussing people and situations in which this is a problem we have to deal with, as well as talking about the solutions we've found to be successful in the past. Next week, I'll suggest a couple of techniques which no one brings up today."

"The dynamics of power and authority are tricky at the best of times. Adding difficult women to the mix takes things from 'tricky' to 'perilous'. The situation is only made trickier by the fact that you usually don't want to simply dismiss them since in addition to difficult, they often tend to be highly competent. So, let's share. Hopefully we'll all learn something."

As students arrived for class today they'd notice that... well, it was laid out a bit funny.

Even by Fandom (and Max's) usual standards.

There were no desks, just a set of chairs. And at the front of the room where one might expect to find a desk for the teacher there were... a set weird looking booths.

Max didn't give them a second glance... )

"What are you waiting for? Get to it."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
Max looked mighty relaxed as he arrived at class. Apparently the week off had been relaxing. Speaking of...

"I hope each of you enjoyed your week off," he said as he looked around. "Which means that it's been two weeks since we last met, and that you've hopefully been in some new places during that time. Normally we'd jump right back into things here without some sort of 'easy' class, but I'm actually curious enough that today we're actually just going to have a simple discussion."

"During the past week many of you probably traveled, you met new people, or you at least saw people you know in new situations. Some of those people were inevitably difficult women." Or, you know, just difficult. "Now, it is my hope that the things you learn in this class are applicable in your day to day lives, so today we're simply going to discuss some of the situations we found ourselves in since we last met." Max grinned suddenly, "And you're free to talk about someone you 'just met over the break' if you want to keep yourself safe from someone who actually knows you."

After a second to look around, Max pointed someone out at random. "You're up. But don't worry, everyone's going to get a turn."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
As he walked into class today Max looked relaxed and, well, pretty much like himself. Not at all like he'd handwavily headed back to Alera to see if the Captain had any new orders for him last week.

"Good afternoon," he smiled as he looked over his students fondly. "You might notice that this week I am alone." He waved his hands in case there were any exasperated groans. "I know, I know. You see me every week, and that can get old, but even my not inconsiderable charm can convince someone else to help me teach you the finer points of this field of study every week. So today you're just going to have to settle for my amazing insights and extensive skills."

He could tell they were super excited by the prospect.

"As many of you know, this past weekend was an interesting local holiday known as Valentine's Day. Ostensibly it's a chance for people to express their love for one another with the giving of romantic gifts, but it turns out to have uses which are broader than might first be apparent. As with any gift-giving holiday, despite it's very specific origins, Valentine's Day has become a holiday in which it is acceptable to give gifts to most anyone. And difficult women tend to like to receive gifts." Just like most people, Max included, but that was utterly beside the point.

"You must be careful, of course. You don't want to give anyone the wrong impression. So selecting a gift that conveys respect without implying more, and picking a gift that doesn't demand something in return are both quite important. At the same time, you don't want to give something lame and insulting. If, however, you manage to strike the proper balance you can leave the recipient with a good feeling about you, and that can mitigate some of the general difficulty with the sort of women we're discussing here."

Max was torn for a moment. If he pointed out that this trick worked equally well with men it was entirely possible that some of his students would take the hint and he could score some sweet stuff. But no! He would be strong and stay on topic. For his students.

"As I'm sure you could predict, today's discussion is on gift giving. Specifically, we'll be talking about women who, in hindsight, we wish we'd given gifts to this past weekend. Or, if this is a lesson you've already mastered," which was possible, he supposed, "think of an example in the past."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
"I feel like breaking into groups last week ended up being quite productive," Max began. Even if he was worried that some of his students were learning far too much for his peace of mind. Still, considering that some of his students insisted that they didn't know any difficult women, it was well worth increasing the world's supply.

"Additionally, I believe seeing some of the things I'm trying to teach in action provided a better understanding of what we're trying to learn here. Demonstrations are always more useful than theory, after all. So with that in mind, I've asked someone else to assist me this week, and luckily for all of you, she graciously agreed."

He grinned over at... )

"Exactly," Max agreed. "Now, much like last week, we'll be splitting into discussion groups. Both Ghnima and I have been involved in these sorts of situations from different directions, so we each have different perspectives. Pick the one you think will be most helpful to you."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
When Max arrived for class today, he wasn't alone. "We've discussed a number of generalities, and talked in pretty broad terms about what we're doing in this class, but today I wanted to delve into things a bit more concrete. So, as you've probably noticed, I brought an assistant. Some of you might know Sophie already. She's an accomplished actress, and she's generously agreed to play the part of a difficult woman for today's class."

Sophie was looking at this as both helping a friend, and a demonstration exercise in manipulation. Because really, students shouldn't let themselves be taken in by someone trying to play them, male or female... but she felt young female students should have every advantage possible, should they need to use these techniques. She wasn't going to ask Max if he'd realized that.

"Thank you, Max. It's lovely to be here." She shot him an amused look. "How quickly do you wish me to become difficult?"

Max chuckled, flashing her an amused grin. "Would you be willing to wait until I explain today's class activity?" he asked.

Nooo, I don't think so... )

"Now," he turned to his class. "You've seen a couple of different techniques. Both from Sophie, which gives you some examples of, admittedly extreme, behaviors you might have to deal with. And you've seen a few of the ways to do that. Now, there are always other things to deal with, and other ways to deal with them."

"So, those of you who want to discuss my technique, join me over here. And those who want to get some pointers from Sohpie, well, she's right there."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
As the students arrived in class for the day, Max looked over them thoughtfully. He'd roughly divided them into into three categories: those who got exactly what the class was about and why it mattered, those who didn't, and the difficult women who had somehow gotten into the class through various errors in what he was sure was a massive conspiracy intended to drive him insane. The first group was fine, and there wasn't anything he could do about the third group. The second group, however... well, he was going to make one last attempt to help them move into the first group. Or at least closer to it.

He took a deep breath and began. "Some of you know why the skills this class seeks to teach are extremely important," and some of them were the reason those skills were important, but Max was good at this so he knew better than to actually point that out, "but some of you don't know any difficult women." Which was something Max found hard to believe, especially given the students he knew from Fandom, but he wasn't going to discount the possibility. After all, and again: Fandom.

"So today's lecture will, hopefully, be short while being highly illustrative at the same time."

Max began pacing slowly back and forth in front of the class as he continued. "While some of you don't know any difficult women at this stage in your lives, you're all still young enough that you might one day be lucky enough for that to change." He paused and swept his eyes across the room. "Last week we talked about the difficult women you can't avoid because they're family or because their friends of people you want to spend time with. This week I us to examine those same women from a different angle: why they're worth knowing."

"I mentioned the woman a good friend of mine is besotted with. And I've met few more difficult women in my life, let me tell you." Which was saying something since, you know, it was Max. "But while she's incredibly infuriating most of the time, and seems to derive an uncomfortable degree of enjoyment from driving me crazy, I can't think of anyone I'd rather have break me out of a magically-warded maximum-security prison after I was falsely accused beating a bastard nearly to death." Not that this had actually happened, of course. Max was, after all, simply a lowly soldier.

Though Max probably would have nearly beaten the bastard to death if he'd actually had the chance...

"The point I'm making is that even if you don't know any difficult women right now, you need to pay attention and learn the skills I'm trying to impart to you because it turns out that the women it's useful to have around often turn out to be difficult." And competent, compelling, attractive, or even all-of-the-above. Not that he was about to admit any of that in a room containing difficult women. "It's important to know how to live with difficult women because much of the time simply avoiding them isn't a very good response, especially in the long run."

"Last week we talked about difficult women we know. This week we're going to talk about why it's worth figuring out how to live with them. You may, if you wish, pick a different woman from the one you spoke about last week." After all, who didn't know multiple difficult women? He looked around a bit doubtfully again. "For those of you who don't know any difficult women," he still didn't believe you, really, "feel free to mention a difficult woman you've heard of who it might be useful to know. Now," he pointed randomly, "you first."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
"Welcome back," Max began without preamble. "I'm sure all of you are getting tired of these introductory classes and actually looking forward to learning what we're here to learn." He grinned and shrugged. "Unfortunately, there's one last day of the boring set up stuff, but I promise that we'll really get going next week."

He looked around, face going serious. "I would like to think that last week's activity made it clear just how important trust and confidentiality are for this course, but in case anyone's still not sure: we will be discussing personal issues in this course. Some of those issues may involve other students who are not in this class. I don't care. You will not discuss the things shared with you in class with anyone outside of it."

"Anyone who violates the trust of this class... well, let's just say that I shall be very... displeased. And there will be... consequences." It was possible that some people would be surprised that Max could manage to be fairly intimidating when he wanted. It probably helped that he was so huge.

"Anyway," he announced, grinning again, "on with today's activity. Which I'm sure you'll all be excited to know involves sharing about a difficult woman in your life." He looked around, eyes pausing on some of the more difficult women in the class. "All of us have at least a few. That's how life is: you know enough people and some of them will be difficult to deal with." And if it turned out that most of those difficult people were women? Well, that's just how the world worked.

When you were Max, at least.

"I'll begin, both so that you'll see what I'm talking about, and so that you'll have an idea of where I'm coming from. Now, like many of you, I'm sure, I know plenty of difficult women. So choosing just one isn't exactly easy. However, there is one I can think of who would be particularly illustrative." Max paused to collect his thoughts. "Back home I have a good friend who has a woman. Well, that's an oversimplification. It might be more accurate to say that the poor guy is completely besotted. Not that this is all that unreasonable. She is an extremely attractive, intelligent, and competent woman, after all. Unfortunately, she knows it. And she always thinks she's right." Somehow the irony of the fact that Max also thought that wasn't something he picked up on.

"The basic problem is that because my friend loves her and spends as much time as he can with her, I actually can't just avoid her. This means I must find ways to deal with her aggravating surety and annoying tendency to be right all the time." That was the worst part. She always got to shoot him those 'I told you so' looks. "And that's what this course is about: teaching you the techniques you need to live in the sort of world where there are impossible women and you can't just avoid them. Because it turns out that there are techniques which allow you go get along with them in one form or another, and that's what you're here to learn."

Max looked around and pointed to someone at random. "You're next."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
Max had spent a large chunk of the past week rethinking precisely how he was going to run this class with all the... women in it. He hadn't really come up with a solution he liked, but it was class time now so it was apparently time to go with a solution he didn't much care for.

"Welcome back, everyone," he began as he looked around at his students. "This class is intended to be a practical one, but for us to do that we're going to have to be candid with one another. That, however, requires trust, and we don't all know one another that well." He quirked an eyebrow, wondering if anyone was going to challenge that assertion. "We're going to try to remedy that." He grinned suddenly before adding, "The trust part."

"You're going to pair up. Then each of you is going to share a deeply private secret with the other one. That way each of you will know that if you violate the trust of the other students in this class, someone else here holds a serious piece of information to punish you with. If the person you're partnered with judges your secret to be insufficiently powerful, they can demand another, so you're better off sharing one major thing than being forced to go through a dozen things that almost qualify."

Max let a hard gaze drift slowly across the room, letting it rest on each student until he felt he'd driven home how serious he was. "Understand this: by receiving these secrets you're being entrusted with something important. Violating that trust is not something I will tolerate. The only reason we're doing this is to help everyone to feel like the can be candid because they'll know that everyone has shared something here they don't want spread around."

He gestured to the handwavy list he had up. "I've assigned partners randomly. Find yours and get to it. I'll be stopping by to check on how each of you are doing."

"Oh, and Pendragon, Cauthon, I want to see each of you after class."
[identity profile] furious-maximus.livejournal.com
With his high level of expertise on the subject, Max hadn't really prepped for class today, or even looked at the class roster. He'd planned to simply launch into an introduction of the topic and outline the goals for the class. He walked in, smiled at his gathered students, and froze.

There were difficult women in his class. Difficult women that he had not brought in to use as examples. He wasn't sure that revealing to them the secret techniques used to make living with them possible would be all that good an idea. After all, as difficult women they were sure to use their knowledge of such techniques to counter them, and make life more difficult for everyone involved.

So, obviously, Max needed a plan. There had to be a way to deal with this problem, after all. Unfortunately he wasn't quick enough on his feet to come up with one on the spot. Max needed a distraction. Max needed...

"That introduction thing. You all know how it works by now. Get to it. And I think that telling us why you're in this class would be helpful." How many of them were spies?
