"So, it's our last class together," Rinoa said, leaning back against the desk as she surveyed the crowd of students. "There isn't a final, as I'm sure you've guessed. It hasn't been that kind of a class. All Jono and I wanted to do, really, was give you guys a space to talk about who you are, and understand the parts of yourself that get complicated. Not just powers, if you have them, but being you, a teenager, and how sometimes it's hard to be just-you if you do have powers, but it's not impossible. The way that all of it intersects."

She was rambling again. They had to expect that by now.

"Today we want you guys to write down a paragraph," she said. "Just tell us if the class was helpful at all, anything that was useful from it, anything you may have learned or thought about or considered from a new viewpoint as a result. If you didn't learn anything, or think about anything, you can just leave it blank. And then you can go, or you can stay and talk to either of us, or each other, if you'd like."

She hesitated, glancing over at Jono before continuing on. She hadn't really cleared this part with her co-teacher; she hadn't even realized she was going to say it before just this moment.

"When I was your age, I felt so alone," she said. "I mean, I had friends, plenty of them, but I'm the only Sorceress in my world. I know Jono's not the only mutant, in his, but it's still hard, being Different in a world of people who are mostly Normal. Maybe it's not the case for you; maybe you're totally normal, where you're from, and that's a good thing. But if you ever feel alone, like I did, and like no one understands, or like you need to talk to someone about all the messiness you're going through ... I work down at the Magic Box. Come find me and we can have tea or something. I don't know that I'll know how to help, but I can always listen. You aren't alone, okay?"

Jono nodded his assent. //I'm not teaching this next term, but I'll be down at Groovy Tunes. You're all welcome to stop in any time. Day or night.//

Rinoa grinned, glad that he didn't mind her improvising. (And that he agreed, but really, she'd expected that one.) "We live over the store," she said. "And we're generally up late, so if it's two AM, we're probably awake, watching bad horror movies. Anyway. That's all I wanted to say."

//Right. So... We don't have much of a discussion prepared for today,// Jono admitted, looking a touch sheepish. //This semester apparently hasn't been much good for that. But we haven't cashed in our 'movie day' get out of jail free card yet, either, so I found an old episode of the Y-People cartoon to show, and then we can discuss it afterward. How you felt about the situation of the young girl, your opinion on the animation, whatever you wish. It's topical, at least.//

He shrugged his shoulders, and then slid a Y-People VHS into an old VCR, because that was just how the 90s rolled, okay?

Today, class would have been handwavily notified via e-mail (or older methods, for the non-technologically-inclined) that they could bring along any pets they might have. In fact, both teachers had pets with them: a kitten was tucked safely in one of Jono's jacket pockets, and a medium-sized dog was curled up at Rinoa's feet.

//Right,// Jono said, once the class had gathered in the Danger Shop today. //So, we've lost a few weeks from our syllabus by this point, a few of us are probably feeling more than a little worse for the wear, there's a camping trip on the weekend for those who are feeling so inclined, and Easter is in two days for the handful of you who care. What we had wanted to do is to let people come in here, in a safe environment, and if they were feeling up to the challenge, encourage them to let go, with or without their powers, to see what they're really capable of. And that offer is still on the table, for the record. If anybody would like a chance to use the Danger Shop as a safe place to find the upper limits of their powers, either Rinoa or myself would be happy to assist you.// He glanced over at Rinoa, who was sitting quietly across the room with her dog keeping her company. Okay, on a better week, maybe they'd both be happy to assist. Jono was here for people either way, at least. //If you're worried about our safety, there's no need. We're both shockingly difficult to damage.//

He shoved his hands into his pockets and shrugged his shoulders.

//Since March was… one hell of a month and all, we're going to give you a few options today. If you care to talk about what happened and what that means for you and your identity, stay right here, and I'll have the Danger Shop bring up some cushions so you can make yourself comfortable as you do so. If the last thing you want to do is more sharing, over there are some punching bags. Beat th'shite out of them, work off some of that frustration, feel free to use your powers if you're comfortable doing so, otherwise, I'm pretty sure we've all got perfectly functional fists and feet that'll do the job just as good. And...// He tilted his head a little. //If any of you want to take us up on that other offer, if you want to step into a private, safe corner of the Danger Shop and really let loose to test your upper limits, come talk to me. I'll have to do this one at a time, but I think there's enough time in this class to handle any takers, and if we don't have time or you aren't feeling up to it quite yet, know that the offer is going to stay on the table for at least as long as I'm still a teacher. Please, come talk to me any time.//

That seemed like it about summed it up, so Jono waved a hand out toward the room.

//Here in the pillows to talk. Over there to the punching bags to let off some steam. Anyone who wants to test what their powers are capable of in a safe space, come talk to me.//

...so neither of the teachers had turned up today. And while Celia was actually inclined to worry, she had more pressing concerns -- namely that she was third-in-charge, here, and thus had to be a TA in more than just name.

Thankfully, she'd always been good at thinking on her feet.

"Good morning," she said, offering a slightly nervous smile when it was evident that everyone who was going to be here was here. "Professors Starsmore and Heartilly weren't able to make it, but we'll soldier through all right, I think."

"So, I don't know about the rest of you," Celia offered, carefully arranging her skirts as she took a seat on the desk at the front of the room and demurely folded her hands in her lap, "but I'm fairly -- worried about the climate. I was here for spring last year, the island didn't do this then, and...and something's clearly wrong."

Fidgeting a little -- being the center of attention when she wasn't performing was awful -- Celia added, "And that's without tapping into my other senses -- I've been actively resisting dipping into how the atmosphere feels, magically, beyond my necessary day-to-day. But sometimes, that's unavoidable. Sometimes our powers come with an unfortunate sort of sensitivity to everyone or everything around us, and there's nothing to be done about it."

She made a face, rolling her eyes. "And sometimes one doesn't need to be gifted with an extra sense or two to tell that winter's going on forever, or that the island's not blooming the way it should. So how do you deal with external factors weighing in on you? Meditation? Sleeping? Hitting things?"

Celia shrugged a shoulder, and added, "I guess that's our topic of discussion today, unless you want to go out and try to figure out what's wrong with the island yourselves. I'm not really that kind of a magic user, so I'm useless, but if you can talk to trees, by all means feel free to go do so."

//So,// Jono said, leaning up against the desk at the front of the room mostly as usual, with the exception of the extremely large snake that was coiled around his torso, resting his head on his shoulder like he had been invited to do so. (He hadn't, and Jono had tried to coax him off before class, but you try arguing with a king cobra who had decided that he wasn't giving up his warm place first thing in the morning, thank you.) //This week, we're going to talk about those people who love you for who you are, not what you can do. And before any of you pipes up with the protest that there isn't any such thing, I'm not going to immediately counter and tell you that you're wrong, but I might ask you to take a moment and look a little closer.//

Today, Rinoa was exhausted. She imagined her co-teacher was, as well, and most of the students. It had been a rather long week. But at least everyone, today, could focus on something other then their individual libidos.

“Welcome back,” she said, nodding at the students. “Congratulations on surviving the week, hopefully with your dignity intact.”

Students today would be pleased to see a roaring bonfire in the middle of the classroom. There was also a moddable pile of blankets, mittens and scarves sitting just inside the door. Best of all were the rows of steaming mugs full of hot chocolate, with marshmallows bobbing to the surface.

The power might be out, but nobody was freezing to death on Rinoa and Jono’s watch.

Today’s class was going to be a bit lopsided. Unlike last week, both teachers were present -- Rinoa, sitting nervously on the desk, and Jono, arms folded in the chair behind it -- but this class was Rinoa’s idea, so she was going to be doing most of the talking.

//Right, then.// Did Jono look a little bit awkward standing at the front of the class alone? Not much, thank goodness. This was hardly his first stint alone in front of a pack of students, after all. Hell, he was even properly wrapped up all over again, and leaning back against his desk as per usual, surveying the students in the room before he kicked into today's lecture. //You lucky lot get to deal with just me this week, so I'm going to try something a little different. Last week, we talked a bit about perspective, about how you present yourself and how people's perceptions of you are different from your own. This week, we're going to have a slightly more practical discussion about the same.//

Today when students entered the classroom, they'd probably be hard-pressed to miss the fact that one of their teachers appeared to be… well… on fire. The other, meanwhile, had accessorized her usual casual look with a gigantic pair of white, fluffy wings, extending from the middle of her back.

Neither seemed to look particularly bothered by this state of affairs. In fact, Jono was leaning back against the desk at the front of the room with his arms crossed in front of himself, ignoring the way the flames flicked up around them, same as he always did but with bonus fire. Rinoa was slightly more keyed up than her usual, a low thrum of excitement hanging around her, but that was subtle enough that it could be easily missed.

Perception And You )

Once again, Jono and Rinoa's class were going to find themselves meeting in a classroom. And once again, they'd find their teachers standing at the front of the room, looking… about as ready as anybody could possibly look, while teaching this particular pack of students.

//Hello again,// Jono said, nodding once it looked as though everyone had taken their seats. //And welcome back. Good to see we didn't scare you off last week, because this week, we're going to talk about more of the same… you. Last week, we discussed a bit about who you are. This week, we're going to stretch things a little, to talk about who it is you might become.//

There weren't any clairvoyants in the room, were there? Not that it mattered, but that could be an interesting insight to have at one's disposal for this lesson.

When the students filed in for class today, they would find themselves stepping into a typical classroom, desks neatly arranged, with two teachers standing at the front of the room. One of them had his arms crossed over his leather-wrapped chest and was looking over the students thoughtfully. The other was a girl in her early twenties, dressed in a simple blue sweater and dark jeans. She kept fidgeting with a necklace around her neck, specifically with the pendant, which appeared to be two rings.

It was the thoroughly leather-wrapped man who spoke first, because what better way to break the students into having a class about powers than by kicking off the first lesson with telepathy?

So, as you lot might have gathered, today's class is about powers. And identity. )
