The Danger Shop was a movie theater today. Sure, as a former employee, Kate could probably have pulled some strings and made a visit to MST3000 happen... but that was way more work than she'd felt up to. Plus she liked having more control of the sim. So, they were in a fake movie theater lobby.

"Today, we're going to the movies!" Kate announced. "It's a valuable life skill, because basically, sometimes you need to relax or you'll go crazy. And going to the movies is great for that because you get to sit on your butt for at least an hour and a half and just focus on what's in front of you." Maybe she wasn't great at picking things to teach, but she was damn excellent at spinning the things she picked as somehow being useful. "So, you're gonna buy tickets ––" She gestured towards the box office. "–– and some snacks ––" The concessions area. "–– and then you're gonna go in the theater, find yourself a good seat, and settle down to watch the movie. Sound simple enough? Get to it, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you get stuck on something. Like what snacks to bring."

She was ever so helpful.

Class was meeting in the computer lab today. Yes, there'd been a handwavy email. "Yo, today we're doing things a little more personalized," Kate said, by way of greeting. "And/or random. When you each get on a computer, you'll find it open on the WikiHow main page. From there, I want you to search for a how-to on something you're interested in learning about. Or, you can just click the option that gets you a random article if you can't think of anything in particular you wanna learn, because you might run into something fun that way."

Had she just pretty much revealed how she came up with over half of the class topics she used? Oh well.

"Also, if you wanna share what you learned with the class, you're totally welcome to, but it's optional if you don't want to. So, get to it, kidlets."

As per the handwavy email Kate had sent out beforehand, class was meeting at Wonka's Sweets Shoppe. "So long story short, last week I was dealing with the everlasting stupid that is midwestern airlines," Kate started without preamble. "So you got my boyfriend instead of me. I hope you had fun, and even if you didn't, I hope you have some this time."

They were in a candy store. If they didn't have fun in here, Kate was going to think there was something seriously wrong with them.

"Today, we'll be taking one of your suggestions from the introductions: we'll be learning how to make chocolate. And we're doing it here, because I wanted you to have actual non-simulated chocolate, and because there's actually someone here who knows what they're doing." That was, a helpful NPC Wonka's employee, who had all the necessary things laid out for them, from ingredients to molds. "And he's going to show us how it's done, and then you can all try your hand at making your own treats. Take it away, Mr. Wonka's representative!"

And so, the man launched into a demonstration of how to make chocolate using cocoa powder as the main ingredient. Pay attention, kids, it was going to be your turn soon.

Instead of Kate, the students would see someone who might be familiar if they took her class last semester. If not, well, they'd see a strange man who was jotting down a few notes and sending messages to Kate to make sure everything was all right. When it was time to start her class, he looked up and smiled.

"Hullo," he greeted, giving the class a nod. "My name is Nobody Owens and I am most definitely not Kate. Kate, unfortunately, had to attend a very important business meeting have to do with her employment back in Kansas. She couldn't attend today and asked that I come out here to help her. So, here I am. I was a student back here a long time ago and I taught one of her classes last term as well so hopefully I'm not terrible at this."

He took a breath and looked down at his notes. "All right, today we're going to be sell lemonade!" So, let's go outside. Hey, it was summer and he'd seen lemonade stands on television before so it only seemed right. Once they were outside, they'd find a few pre-made stands and ingredients to make lemonade.

"So, your ask for today is to prepare your lemonade however you'd like it. A lot of sugar, little sugar and a lot of lemon, little ice, lots of ice, whatever and then you have to set a price for your lemonade and then it's time to sell! We'll see if anyone makes a profit by the class end."

He didn't think it would happen but it was going to be a hot one so maybe he'd be surprised.

Class was again meeting in the Danger Shop. This week, the space was a big field of grass on top a hill, with a moderately sunny but cloudy blue sky up above. Yes, maybe they could've found something similar by actually going outdoors, but Kate liked being able to control the environment. And how warm or humid it was.

"Today, we're going to look for shapes in clouds," she announced. Yes, this was an actual class you were taking at a high school. "Basically, what we'll do is we're gonna lay down and look up at the sky and all the wonderful computer-generated clouds and try to make sense of them as familiar shapes. It jogs your creativity." Maybe. "And I guess it might strenthen your spatial reasoning, or something. Mostly, it's just fun and relaxing and I know for sure everyone needs that sometimes."

Especially people living in a haunted house, like she was vaguely aware they did.

"So, everyone, flop down. You can freestyle your shape-spotting, or you can hold up your hands and frame a part of the sky with your fingers, like you might do if you were figuring out what kind of a photograph to take. Talk about what you see. Or don't, it's up to you. Like, maybe you have a terminally filthy mind and everyone doesn't wanna hear about it. Use your brains."

With that, she moved to lay down in the grass, and pointed up at the sky.

"See, I can already totally see a corgi."

Class was meeting in the Danger Shop, and the simulation looked like the interior of a fancy jewelry store. Dark wood, shiny display cases, expensive looking jewelry, the works. And of course, Kate in a hipstery dress with a polar bear print on it, leaning against the counter. Next to her, there was a case of diamond rings.

She waved at the students. "Hi, welcome to Whatever 101," she said, "where you'll basically be learning whatever strikes my fancy any given week, because my off-island job is still a mess and I had to submit a class proposal at the very last minute. It will be fun, I promise." Fun for her, at least, but she hoped it would be fun for them as well! "Today, we're gonna do introductions, and you're going to learn about how to tell a real diamond from a fake one, because you just never know when you're going to need that skill. Like if a skeezy person is trying to propose to you and you're trying to figure out whether you should at least take the ring."

Because that was so likely to happen. She picked up a ring off the counter.

"Anyway. I'm Kate, please call me that and not Miss Gregson or anything because that will just weird me out and I probably won't realize I should react. Kate's fine." She held up the ring. It had a nice, sizable, glittering diamond on it. "Super basic diamond ring testing. Three options: check the mount, check it with a loupe, or breath on it. That first one's pretty obvious, right? If the setting and mount are made of like some cheapskate metal and not either gold or platinum, it gets preeeeeetty unlikely the stone is real." Duh. She inspected the inside of the ring. "Basically, look at the stamps on the inside of the ring. If it has like a number with K after it, that means it's so-and-so carat gold, and you're doing okay that far."

Now, she indicated to some jeweler's loupes on the counter next to the rings. "Next up, you can use a loupe to look at the diamond close up. It might make sense for you to assume that a real diamond is all clear and totally uniform and perfect, but actually real diamonds have like these tiny flecks of minerals and super slight color changes and stuff, so look for those. Fakes are more likely to look perfect." Seriously, that had surprised her when she'd found out. "And finally, the breathing test. Super easy. If you breathe on a real diamond to fog it up, it stays clear or at least clears way faster than a fake. If you breathe on a fake repeatedly, it's gonna start building up condensation, because that's just its thing."

There were better reasons for that, sure, but she liked to simplify.

"So, there you have it," she said. "That's how you can tell whether that skeezy dude or lady proposing to you at least has an actual diamond ring. Not that I'm advocating getting married to skeezy people, but anyway. Now, I want you all to tell me your names and grades, and then grab a ring and use one or more of the methods I just explained to figure out if it's fake or not." Technically they were all fake since this was a simulated environment, but you know. Some of them were simulating the real thing and some were simulating fakes. Kate nodded at one student from the group at random. "You first."
