It was a Hannibal with a gentler smile and less product in his hair that greeted class at Portalocity this morning. His suit was still top-notch, but a bit less severely cut. (He also had a bit more of an accent, but he'd been working on it.)

"Good afternoon, class! Today we will be heading out to somewhere possibly more familiar to one of you." He nodded to Kurt if he was here. "The Dresden Christmas market is the oldest in Europe, and one of the largest. It is actually a number of markets, and you can easily get between them. There is plenty of shopping, and also food and entertainment. Please enjoy!"

"Today our markets will be in Vilnius, Lithuania," Hannibal announced with a slight smile. "The country where I was born." And not Denmark like last week. Really.

"There are several squares that have markets, and there is plenty to do, albeit mostly shopping," he added. "Please enjoy, let me know if you need any translation, and meet me back at our landing point to return home."

And with that, he led them to the fairs.

"We'll undoubtedly get plenty of Christmas occurrences this month, courtesy of the island," Hannibal began, "but I thought it might be good to experience some that aren't an inconvenience or minor danger. And it will give us all some time to shop as well."

He led them through the portal. "Welcome to Tivoli Gardens, in Denmark. There should be plenty to do here. Enjoy yourselves, and I will find you back here at the end of class."

Ignore the people there who didn't at all sound like Hannibal.

Today's class had been asked to meet at Hannibal's house, where he greeted them and led them to the dining room.

"Tomorrow is a holiday in the United States. One that often involves quite a lot of food, thereby making it one of my personal favorites. So I thought we would get to know this particular aspect of Earth by celebrating with each other one day early."

Once they had a seat, he would bring out each course:
Roasted pumpkin and pear soup
Endive with tart apple dressing and blue cheese
Duck breast with three red fruits, duck fat potatoes, roast root vegetables, and spiced cranberry sauce
French chocolate mousse with orange

And of course, the best coffee and tea as you go.

"Some of you may have gotten to be children this weekend," Hannibal noted. He had been...out. And it was a good thing it hadn't hit him at the time.

"Whether you did or not, it's a good thing to be able to enjoy yourself, and there is no reason children should have all of the fun. Today we will be visiting the City Museum in St. Louis. It has a ferris wheel, climbs and slides, caves, and numerous other interesting activities. There is also a circus. And since the roof is only open March through October, we'll be visiting it this past May. Enjoy."

He led them through the portal and to the museum.

"Yesterday in the country Fandom is nominally part of was an election day," Hannibal explained when they met at Portalocity today. "This means that today, a lot of people are aggravated. Earth cultures have come up with quite a few ways to cope with stress."

He liked to kill and eat people, personally, but he liked to think that was something that couldn't be taught.

"One of the latest is Anger Rooms, where you are presented with a room and invited to smash and destroy everything in it." He led them through the portal.

"Please be sure to wear all safety equipment provided. This is not the Danger Shop."

"Good afternoon," Hannibal greeted the students. "I hope you've had enough candy already. Today we will be experiencing more generally autumn-themed events."

He led them through the portal. "Welcome to Treinen Farm. Autumn is traditionally a time of harvest, and before the harvest it's become a custom lately to build mazes in corn fields. This is one of the best in the United States, according to several lists, so it should be interesting. And it should take approximately one hour to complete, so I will leave you all to it. If you finish, I'll have hot cider and molasses cookies for you."

Meanwhile, he'd be drinking the coffee he'd brought and visiting the petting zoo. Because shut up, animals were often superior to humans.

"Good afternoon," Hannibal greeted the class at Portalocity today. "Or rather, good evening, as we will be jumping a few hours into the future today. It wouldn't be the same during the day.

"Since this weekend is Halloween, I thought we might do something thematically appropriate." He handed each of them a ticket. "Knott's Scary Farm is supposed to be one of the better haunted experiences in the United States. And whether you find it scary or not, there should be plenty to do. Since we're already playing loose with time, I've arranged several hours for us."

The portal opened, and he waved them through. "Happy Halloween."

"I hope you all enjoyed getting to know France last week," Hannibal said. "I'm rather fond of it myself, having in part grown up there. I thought this week we might experience something a bit different. And something with a bit less walking," he added, smiling. "I hope you brought swimwear as you were handwavily reminded to."

He led them through the portal and to, "Hanauma Bay. It is a nature preserve in Hawaii." It was also not light out yet. "I understand the sunrise is spectacular, and we haven't even had to wake up early for it. We will also avoid too many tourists." Said as if you all clearly weren't. "If you care to snorkel, there are numerous fish here and it is also known for its green turtles. Enjoy."

He would probably swim after the sunrise.

"I also have towels if you've forgotten yours, and sunscreen. Please do not get burnt."

"Good afternoon," Hannibal greeted the students when they met at Portalocity. "Next week we will be visiting France as a school trip, and if past school trips are any indication, it will be pleasant but not necessarily relaxing. So today, we will see another facet of France: the Alps. Specifically, Cheval Blank spa in the Alps. You can choose from a number of treatments, relax in the sauna or one of the tubs, eat in the restaurant, or simply explore the mountains outside. Enjoy."

He bowed them through the portal and headed off for his own relaxation.

Hannibal today was not dressed in a wool suit. He was actually dressed down, for him, in a button-up shirt and slacks, and he greeted everyone with a nod.

"I hope that you all had a good weekend, but I am aware that regardless of if you had visitors or not, it can be stressful. Fortunately, Earth offers a variety of ways to relax. Today we will be experiencing one of them.

He waved them through a portal, where they found themselves just outside a storefront.

"Welcome to Purrth. We are in Perth, Australia, so the local language is English. We have tickets to the cafe, and you can also purchase drinks and snacks. You'll have to remove your shoes and any bags, and please be mindful of the rest of the rules." He pointed them out as he slipped his shoes off and sanitized his hands. "Enjoy and relax."

"Good morning everybody," Hannibal greeted them cheerfully at Portalocity. "It's been brought to my attention that there is a wedding coming up, so today we are going shopping."

He led them through the portal and out onto a street. "It's back to Italy today. Milan instead of Florence. The Quadrilatero d'Oro, the Rectangle of Gold, is one of the premier places in the world to shop for clothing. There are shops for Prada, Gucci, Armani, Ferragamo, Dolce & Gabbana, and many others. Everyone is leaving here today with at least one new set of clothing. You can stay with me, and I will guide you through the stores, or you may explore on your own and put it on my bill. Perhaps stay away from Cartier and Rolex in that case, or at least ask me first." More because he had Opinions than because of concern about money. He trusted you not to buy anything over six figures.

He spread his arms. "I will be beginning in Armani. Enjoy your time."

Hannibal made sure everyone was dressed for warm weather as they got together, then waved them through the portal.

"Welcome to The Eden Project. The world's largest indoor rainforest, among other things. You can explore the rainforest or Mediterranean climates from here, all of it developed from a clay pit in Cornwall. Which, if you're not familiar with it, is not known for its Mediterranean climate. There are also scientific exhibits, and a zipline to view the gardens from above if you are so inclined."

He shooed them off. "Again, meet me here when you're done."

"Welcome back." Class had been asked to meet at Portalocity today. "We'll be going somewhat further afield today. Why don't we start out?"

He waved them through the portal and out into a city with a lovely view. "Florence is a city I'm rather fond of. It's in Italy, if you're not familiar with it. Before us is the Duomo, a church cathedral dating to the thirteenth century. The architecture is stunning, and tours of it are free. If you prefer other sorts of art, the Uffizi Gallery is that direction." He pointed. "It was one of the earliest public museums, and has a huge collection of Renaissance art particularly."

He shrugged. "You can also choose to wander the city and eat, if you like; there are some very good restaurants and gelato shops. Meet me back here in time to return, please. Don't make me track you down." He was absolutely giving you stern looks.

Hannibal was chipper today. Which meant that Jono could tell he was pleased, and to everybody else he'd just seem content.

"We didn't advise you to dress any particular way this week, because we will be indoors," he said. "Not all of the world's interesting places are particularly beautiful or scientifically or artistically superior. Some are simply amusing. Many, unsurprisingly, revolve around money."

He took out money and split it up, passing it out to the children. "You may of course spend your own money if you like, but we thought we might give you a bit extra." Each of them got fifty dollars.

"Today, we are going to the West Edmonton Mall. The largest shopping area in the Americas - the pair of continents we're nominally a part of. It contains over eight hundred stores, over one hundred places to eat, and the world's largest indoor amusement park."

//Also has an olympic-sized skating rink, a giant bloody wave pool with what at one point was the world's tallest indoor free-fall waterslide, several cinemas, and the occasional petting zoo,// Jono offered. //Plus a lake. With a life-sized re-creation of the Santa Maria. And underground sea life caverns. Some sea lions...//

This mall was a bit extra.

//We'll be spending the entirety of this class here, but an hour isn't long enough to see everything, and so you're welcome to stick around a little longer still. Hannibal and I will be here - I have been talked into shopping hell, this is my life for at least another few hours - and will be meeting people by the koi ponds in Chinatown to send them home via portal on the hour until... I don't know. Seven. Seven seems like a good time before everything starts to shut down.//

"We will also have our phones, should you wish to contact us or have any questions," Hannibal volunteered. "Otherwise, please enjoy a sampling of Earth's commodities and services, and do try not to get yourselves kicked out."

"Welcome to our last class," Hannibal said as the students gathered. "Today we'll be combining several elements of our previous trips - impressive topography, native culture, islands, and impressive lights."

"There's gonna be a lot more fire, though," Kanan observed. "I don't think we've done very much with fire yet this semester at all."

Which, really, was probably for the best. )

"So, uh, I guess there's some kind of holiday this weekend?" Kanan looked faintly perplexed. Earth certainly did seem to like its holidays. "Or, I guess, one long rolling holiday in Japan, that place we went before to watch the kenjutsu, all centered around the blossoming of flowers."

Nobody tell him about Easter.

"Specifically, the sakura, or cherry blossom," Hannibal said. "This is a festival called Hanami, celebrated when they are in peak bloom; it begins in the south in March and rolls northward across the country until around early May. It's traditional to visit parks, sit under the trees, and enjoy a picnic."

In case anybody was wondering why Hannibal loved this holiday.Read more... )

Hannibal's smile today was pleased and anticipatory. "Today we won't be seeing much; there are, after all, other sorts of experiences and other ways to enjoy Earth. Today, we'll be pampering ourselves. And letting others pamper us."

Notice had been sent out before class today that, while getting wet was optional, students might want to consider bringing some manner of swimwear today. And that notice had been given for good reason.

"Looks like Dr. Lecter found us a spa," Kanan said, looking... amused, mostly. "In the... Caribbean? Am I saying that right?"

"You are," Hannibal confirmed. "And since we've been fairly parsimonious so far, we should be able to make up for it today." The school was never going to let him do this again. Except Hannibal.

"Right," Kanan mused, scratching thoughtfully at his beard, "we probably saved them a bit on that trip into space, anyway."

Thanks, Hera!

"So I fully expect everybody to have a very good time," Hannibal said. "Whether you prefer a massage, a bath, or simply wandering the lovely treehouse."

It was a thing, apparently.

"A spa in a treehouse," Kanan mused, shaking his head and grinning. "Not making Earth any less cute, Doctor."

When class met today, Hannibal had a sketchpad under one arm, and was dressed in a jaunty and very Italian suit and hat. Not that the students could probably tell the difference. He was also in a very good mood for a number of reasons, only one of which was their destination.

To Rome! )

"You know," Kanan mused, scratching his beard as the class gathered at the Causeway to catch their next portal, "I have to admit I was wondering how long it would take for Doctor Lecter to arrange for us to do something food-related this semester. He held out impressively long. I'm proud of you, Doctor."

Hannibal smiled. )

This week, the class wasn't told to meet at the causeway. They were told to meet at the junkyard, where they would find Kanan waiting at the gate, grinning. Oh yeah, he was in a good mood for this one. Could anybody blame him, really?

Hannibal couldn't, and he was rather looking forward to the class. The junkyard was another story, though, and he was doing his best not to get rust on his suit. "Good morning. Today is another of Mr. Jarrus' ideas, though I believe you'll all enjoy it."Read more... )

"This week, we're switching from natural to human spectacles," Hannibal said. "We had hoped to do this next week, which is when it actually occurs, but as that is spring break...well, what use are portals if you can't tweak times a little?"

"And the way I see it, if you're going to tweak time, you might as well be doing it in order to catch a good party," Kanan added, grinning just a bit shamelessly. Look, he'd read up on this after Hannibal had mentioned it. He was completely gung-ho for this one. "I'll have to thank Portalocity for getting something right, for a change."

He might want to wait until they did, first.

Of course, if they didn't, then he'd be finding out just how far one can drop-kick a gnome when using the Force to enhance a good kick. So.

Hannibal shook his head at the enthusiasm and continued. "This time of year for those who follow the Catholic religion begins Lent - a period of giving up extravagance and luxury, traditionally. Thus, various cultures have a tradition of indulgence beforehand. One of those traditions is Carnival; the largest is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Roughly two million people fill the streets over the week to engage in any number of things - dancing, music, art, a parade." He shrugged.

"I'm in this for the dancing," Kanan shared.

He was also in this for the debauchery, and was absolutely not planning on catching the first portal back, today.

"The music, dancing, and much of what you will see is a good example of Brazilian artistry, albeit often taken to the extreme," Hannibal said. "The primary language is Portuguese, but many will also speak Spanish, or English. Enjoy yourselves, and please do not get lost." Yourself or your clothes, Kanan.

"Okay," Kanan said, grinning a little as the students congregated for today's portal, "this week, we're going to do something a little different. We're going to take in the wonders of Earth's wildlife... without actually leaving civilization."

He was kind of proud of himself this week. He'd thought this one up himself, after an inspirational cinnamon-bun-powered stroll with Steve a few weeks back.

"This week, we're going to the zoo. Um, not the one in Baltimore, though. It's a little cold there right now."

"The San Diego Zoo is famous for good reason," Hannibal said. "It houses a large number of exhibits and species, and was one of the pioneers in cageless, more natural habitats."

"For those who, for whatever reason, might not know what a zoo is, it's... kind of like a living museum. A place where people have collected multiple species of animals for educational and entertainment purposes, and people walk around and... look at them, mostly." Kanan shrugged. "This one, obviously, houses Earth animal species, as well as botanical gardens. The zoo not only participates in conservation programs for animals, but for plant life as well."

"Please obey the signs, don't feed any animals you shouldn't, and don't go anywhere you shouldn't." Hannibal was mostly looking at Kanan there, yes. "Otherwise, enjoy."

Class today had been told to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and closed-toe, comfortable shoes. When Hannibal met them at the portal, he was wearing a pair of designer jeans, a light cotton plaid shirt, and boots, along with a stylish, wide-brimmed hat.

"Good morning," he told them. "A few weeks ago, we saw Uluru in the Australian desert. Today, we're going to the American southwest to see a desert as well as several other sorts of life zones."

Make up your mind, Earth. )

"So," Hannibal said, clapping his hands together. "We are heading back into the cold today. But not outside, so we'll have no worries about frostbite."

"Which is good," Kanan interrupted, "because after Earth-Hoth South, I wasn't looking forward to freezing up in Earth-Hoth North."

He was helpful!

"If I understand my friend right," Hannibal interrupted back, "this place we're going is more like a world in your galaxy called Alderaan. Cold in winter, warm in summer, and mountainous."

"Huh. Fancy," Kanan mused. "They have thrantas there, too?"

Sorry, Kanan.

"I have no idea what a thranta is; you'll have to let me know if you see one."

The answer, unfortunately, was no.

"Will do," Kanan replied, throwing off a lazy salute. "In the meantime, we're going to be sitting by a window and a fireplace in a ski lodge near somewhere called 'Whitehorse.'"

"It's in the Yukon territory of Canada," Hannibal explained. "More to the point, it's well after sundown, and in a perfect location to view the northern lights."

"I'm led to believe that the northern lights - and the southern lights, if you're on the other side of the planet - are quite the sight," Kanan offered. "They're basically what happens when charged particles from this system's sun collide with gaseous particles in the Earth's atmosphere. The most common color for the lights - also called the aurora - is green, but other color variations can happen depending on what gas particles are doing the colliding."

"The northern and southern auroras coincide and are roughly symmetrical," Hannibal said. "We likely would have had a good view of the southern aurora last week, were it not for the perpetual light. So, this week, enjoy the aurora borealis and the ski lodge, and the very different sorts of cold terrain there are on this planet."

Yes, he was getting a little smug at Earth's diversity. It was a hobby.

"Earth-Hoth North," Kanan said again. Not at all petulantly. Mostly just for good measure.

"So," Kanan said, arms crossed over his chest and looking fairly amused as he looked at the gathered students in the Portalocity lobby, "last week we took in the coast of... Australia? That's what it's called? Australia. So, this week I challenged Dr. Lecter to show me some of that variety he'd been talking about, on the same continent." He chuckled and shook his head. "How was I supposed to know from the place we were at that there's a huge chunk of desert in the middle of that continent, huh?"

So, yeah. This week you were all taking in the Australian outback )

Class had been handwavily contacted ahead of time to be informed that their usual meeting place would be Portalocity, and that for today they should bring warm-weather clothes, and swimsuits if they were so inclined.

"Hello," Hannibal greeted them all with a smile. "Welcome to class, which this semester is Discovering Earth. If you think perhaps it sounds rather like an excuse to show off my planet to those of you not from it, you would be absolutely right."

And that included his co-teacher. )
