Discovering Earth, Friday, Period 2
Class today had been told to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and closed-toe, comfortable shoes. When Hannibal met them at the portal, he was wearing a pair of designer jeans, a light cotton plaid shirt, and boots, along with a stylish, wide-brimmed hat.
"Good morning," he told them. "A few weeks ago, we saw Uluru in the Australian desert. Today, we're going to the American southwest to see a desert as well as several other sorts of life zones."
"Because, as we're learning in this class," Kanan offered, "Earth actually has no idea what sort of planet it wants to be. It's going for everything all at once."
He was starting to sound less bewildered about that fact, and more maybe-slightly-impressed. He'd had doubts that Earth actually had that much variety, before.
Hannibal was just amused. "In this case, it's gone for many things over the course of around two billion years, and a lot of it is exposed for viewing. For those of you who may be familiar with it, we're going to the Grand Canyon."
"And for those of you who aren't, yes, we are taking you to see a big hole in the ground," Kanan offered.
In fairness it was a really, really big hole.
"It's not the deepest hole, even on land," Hannibal said, just shaking his head at Kanan. "But it's lovely, and you can see a lot of geological history in its walls. Or simply enjoy the scenery. We'll be taking a tour by mule, which will last a total of three hours, two in the saddle. Those of you who don't wish to do that may stay at the rim and visit the museums and speak with the rangers."
"From what I can tell, the mule ride isn't for people who aren't good with heights," Kanan added, helpfully. "The mules are sure-footed, but that mostly means they can take you along some trails that are impressively close to a sheer drop."
Kanan would totally be going on the mule tour. Not only was he not afraid of heights, he kind of wanted to find out what in the world a mule was.
More stubborn than him, for a start.
Though possibly not by much.
"Those of you who are going," Hannibal added, "you will need a wide-brimmed hat. Since I assume many of you don't have them, I've taken the liberty of procuring some for you." From the Boards; thank you, Jono. "You are welcome to keep them."
He waved them through the portal. "For now, let's get going. We don't want to miss our rides."
