Maddie was fanning herself and wiping at her eyes constantly as the class began, so Syvvie took point.

"Well. It looks like we've made it to our last class."

Maddie blew her nose.

"You guys have been great. Mad and I couldn't have asked for a better bunch of students. Thank you. But let's get on with it. Now, our culture is based very much on a patriarchican society. That means the men were in charge."

"For a loooong time,"

"That's right. And a lot of our society was shaped by this fact. But what if it had been the other way around? What if the women had been in charge from the start? How would it be different? Now, maybe some of you came from places where women got to be charge, then you get to help the rest of us out. What would society be like, as a whole, if Mad and I were in charge, say? Would there be less war? More? What would be considered the most important personality traits? Would we still have SUVs? Think about it, talk about it, do whatever you want,"

"As long as you're willing to get up and do it."

"That's right. Have fun, people!"

[ooc: Last class! *sniffles*]

Today, the students were greeted with table upon table of art supplies, including paints, clay, plaster, paper mache, feathers, popsicle sticks, markers, plastic rhinestones, and of course, glitter.

"Alright people, let's get right to it, this week. Now, we've been doing this for a little while so you all should have started to get a pretty good idea of what your personal gender indentificationing is! Which is why today, we're going to have a little fun."

"But only a little,"

"Oh, hush, Syvvie!" Maddie gestured to the table. "You see we have lots and lots of artistic supplies up here. We want you to go ahead and make a self-portrait. But! There's a catch! There's always a catch! You might notice that we don't have any MIRRORS around here! That's because you're not allowed to look at yourself while you do this. That's right!"

"That's right!"

"We're not interested in seein' your physical outdoor self, today, we want to see your inner self. Your mental image of who you are on the INSIDE. And there ain't no mirror that can tell you that."

"Don't they say the eyes are the mirrors to the soul?"

"Doors, Syvvie. Doors, not mirrors."

"No, I don't think that's it, either,"

"Anyway, no editing, no peeking, just . . . have at it! Make a mess and lets see your gorgeous inner-selves!"

[ooc: OCD is coming up. Art supplies are entirely moddable.]

"People, people, students, kids, and furry wild things that are also students!" Maddie clapped her hands. "Settle down, settle in, lets get this boat on the tarmac, here!"

Yes, she did this whether or not the students were making any noise. Or if they were even there. She possibly did this in her spare time at home.

"Okay, now." She resettled her glasses on her nose. "We're going to be working on something very important, today. Something that will really help your understanding of who you are as a person and how gender roles affect your day to day lives. Isn't that right, Syvvie?"

"I think you just want to play dress up. . . ."

"Oh, hush, you." Maddie grinned. "Right. So. These last few weeks, you've talked about how your feel about your gender, about what society expects of each of the genders, and last week, about how you might be different if you were a different gender. Well! This week, we're going to find out!"

"Sort of."

"Yes, sort of, we're not going to turn you all into boys and girls from being girls and boys, we can't do that. But! We do want you to try out some of the gender roles of the opposite sex, right? We have clothes here, and everything! So! Come on, then! Get dressed up! There's plenty of room to change, and I promise, all the clothing is freshly cleaned." She gestured to some rows of changing screens and racks of clothing. A lot of it seemed to be from the fifties and sixties . . . there were some seventies leisure suits in there, even, and yes, some modern clothing as well. "Girls, try out being a boy. Boys? Let's see how it is to be a girl. Undergarment changes are entirely optional, but if you want the full experience . . . stuff 'em."

"And have fun."

"That's right, that's right, how could I forget, that's a rule! Have fun with this, boys and girls and animals. We have wigs and hats, even! Who doesn't like wigs, I mean, really? Oh! Oh! And before I forget! We have an assignment for you, this week! I know, I know, homework, it stinks, it really does, but this is fun homework! I want you all to pick a day this week and spend that day pretending to be the opposite gender. Try to be social while you're at it, see how people react. It's a learning experience. Get to see how all those transvestitutes do it, and all the things they have to put up with. Okay! Chop chop! Let's go!"

[ooc: OCD coming is up. Clothing available on the racks is completely moddable.]

Maddie clapped her hands to get everyone's attention at the start of class. "Hello! Everybody! Students, students, your attention, students!"

It was entirely possible the students were paying attention already, in fact. But Maddie liked clapping and calling for attention.

"Okay then, is everybody here? Did Holly and Molly scare everyone off last week?" She burst into giggles. "Oh, darlings, I know they're weird, but you've got to love their enthusiasm. And we've seen weirder, trust me,"

"We have," agreed Syvvie.

"But that's neither there nor over further over there. I hope you all had a great week and moved safely back into your dorms. . . . Today, we're going to do a little bit of imaginationing. Get yourselves loosened up for some role-play we might do later. That's right."

"That's right. What we want you to do today is to imagine what your life might've been like if you'd been born of a different gender."

"If you're a boy if you'd've been a girl, if you're a girl if you'd've been a boy--don't tell me men or women, Syvvie, I don't have time, today."

"I wasn't going to say anything."

"Sure you were. Anyway. Pair up, you know, like you usually do, or you can work in bigger groups if you'd like, but I want you all to draw a picture of what you might've looked like as the opposite gender, and tell a little story of what your life might have been like. Get creative! Would you have been a sports star? A cheerleader? A band geek? What? Go ahead now, get talking!"

[ooc: Yeah, I know, kind of lame, but I didn't get a chance to post it last night so I'm typing off the top of my head from work, today. OCD is on its way]

Madeline seemed to be stuck in "giggling like crazy" mode at the start of class, so for once Sylvia was the one to do all the talking.

"Sit down, sit down, let's get started, shall we? Today we've got a special treat for you: some friends of ours from our own Women's Studies courses, Holly and Molly, have agreed to come and perform their performance art piece 'Sister Woman Sister'. So try to humor them, alright?

With that, she stepped back, and two women wearing "wife-beater" tank tops strode to the front of the class. The first one spoke:

"Welcome, students. My name is Holly and my partner Molly and I would like to thank Madeline and Sylvia for inviting us here today to perform for you." Holly gestured to Molly, who held a pair of bongos.

"We'd like to start with an original tune. . . ."

When the performance was done with, Sylvia stepped back up, applauding bemusedly. "Thank you Holly, thank you Molly. You know, I've seen you do that a dozen times now, and I still don't know what the hell you're talking about. Well." She turned to the students. "Holly and Molly will be here to answer any questions you may have. If you're not asking them questions, I'd like you all to pair up and plan your own performance art pieces about gender. Maybe we'll even perform 'em next week. Who knows?"

[ooc: links are, well, what they're labeled. The NWS version is the original. Both links are to backdated posts. Holly and Molly are here with admin permission. OCD on its way! is up, yay!]

Once Madeline had finished her nose-twitching head count, she nodded to Sylvia and they got started.

"Today," Sylvia declared. "Today, we're going to talk about human sexuality."

Human sexuality )

"So what we want you to do, today," Sylvia cut in. "Is to practice . . . doing that thing . . . what's it called. . . ."

"Coming out of the cabinet."

"That's right. Pick a partner, pretend they are someone that you care very much about and are afraid of telling, and tell them. Be supportive of each other. Lie, if you have to. But let's see if we can't all see that it'll all be okay, in the end."

Madeline sniffled. "That was beautiful, Syvvie."

"Thank you, I try."

[ooc: OCD is on its way up. Opening dialogue and the monologue are taken almost word for word from the "Las Hermanas" sketch in Parallel Lives. Nothing at all explicit under the cut, so no worries about opening it at work. Have fun, people!]

Madeline twitched her lips and adjusted her glasses as she looked over the gathered students, counting them silently in her head. "All right, all right, is everyone here? Are we all met, as some guy once said? Good, good, welcome to Women and Gender Studies! Now, let's get started. . . ."

And they do. Eventually. It takes a little while, though )

[OOC: OCD is up, have-at ye! I promise, they'll be moderately less babbly in classes to come.]
