Ares grinned at his class as they assembled before him. It wasn't a nice grin. "Now I promised you something special for this last class and I don't want to disappoint."

"Today you are all going to give a practical demonstration of the self-confidence skills that I've been teaching you, by justifing your continued existence. Because let's face it, I'm a god, and if I amused me I could kill you all with hardly any effort. So put on a good show."

Not that he was actually allowed to do anything to them, but hey, they didn't know that.

"So," Ares said, after the class had assembled. "You have fought to defend your town, you have made alliances, and you have made enemies."

"What next? Simple enough question, but the answer? Different story entirely. This class I want you to discuss what you do next. Taking into account your army, your allies, your enemies, your growing influence on events, your new and increased self confidence. Just remember, you have power now, and it does have that little tendency to corrupt."

"We'll also be doing something special next class, so be on your toes."

"I'm pleasantly surprised," Ares said, as the class met up in the Dangershop. "Not only many of you recognise the danger your hostage presented, but some of you suggested quite intelligent methods of dealing with his offer. Which brings us to our next role-play scenario. Making alliances."

"Having made enemies of the growing empire your hostage came from, you have decided that, having little ability to stand on your own against the combined forces of an empire, to start making alliances with various powers in and around your area. Warlords, kings, the random tribe of Amazons. However, given that you do only represent a small village, you may find your potential allies attempting to screw you over. Presenting a good show of confidence when dealing with them is one way to prevent this."

"Today I want you first to discuss various negotiating strategies you might use to appear to be coming from a place of strength, then to try them out on various potential allies. Good luck."

"So," Ares said, after the class had arrived at the main campfire. "Last week, you all decided that the best thing to do after being banished from your village was to raise an army to create a kind of bufferzone to prevent your village being attacked again." Which they hadn't, exactly, but Ares wasn't going to let that stop him.

"Now, after you've got the hang of this whole leading an army thing, you find you're quite successful at it, and in short order are building up a decent reputation. One day, while doing your thing, your men capture a prisoner, a minor general of a smallish empire, who says you can fetch a handsome ransom for him. What do you do? Do you get him go? Do you ransom him, kill him?"

"Now, assuming you decide to ransom him, which being the intrepid young warriors you are, I am, you obviously don't treat him shabbily, after all, there's a meal ticket riding on it, and hey, this guy is rather charming, so you two get along...well, given our classroom setting, let's just leave it as getting along rather well. Now, before you let him go, your hostage proposes you meet up in a couple of days and start a new alliance. Again what do you do? Why?"

"However, once you meet up with your new 'ally' again, it turns out that it all was a bit of a trap and you get crucified. Whoops. Luckily for you, you get freed from the cross by a 'good friend', and taken to a healer to do something about that whole shattered lower legs thing you've got going for you, but not before your friend gets skewered by a couple of arrows and dies."

"Discuss the most self-empowering way you can think of to deal with this betrayal, and your loss of both your friend and the use of your legs for the foreseeable future."

Ares smiled at his class. It wasn't a particularly comforting smile.

"You all acquitted yourselves satisfactorily during last week's class," he said. "Most people would have just gone fleeing to the hills. However, despite your valiant efforts, most, if not all of your fellow villagers have been slaughtered and what few remain have banished you in a fit of blame?"

"What do you do? Do you try and futilely beg forgiveness from your peers? Do you attempt to raise an army to prevent your town from ever coming under attack again? Do you become obsessed with trying to destroy the one who attacked your village in the first place?"

"Break up into groups and discuss what you would do, how you would go about it, and how this would have a positive effect on your self-confidence."

At some point since the last lesson, Ares had gone back to his natural hair colour.

"Good morning, class," he said. "Today we'll be doing some roleplay. You are all helpless villagers, weaponless, defenceless, sitting ducks, really, and your teeny, tiny peaceful village is about to be destroyed by a ruthless warlord. What do you do?"

"Also, in keeping with the spirit of things, any and all entreaties to me will be ignored, I'm the God of War, that means I'm on the warlord's side. Instead bug TA girl."

After the class had assembled by the main campfire, Ares, still with blue hair, appeared before them. "Welcome, class, I'm Ares, God of War, and before you ask, yes, I am an actual god, with powers, so don't bother trying to prove I'm not1, because it gets boring after a while, and when I get bored, bad things start happening."

"Now, you're all here because you have some self-confidence issues, and man, I can see why, but don't worry, by the time I'm through with you, you'll believe you can take on anything, and take over anywhere. And who knows? Someone of you might actually be able to."

"We'll start things off easy, and get into the hard stuff next week, so today I'm going to want you to introduce yourselves, tell me and the rest of the class a little about yourself, what you want out of this class, any weapons and or fighting experience you may have, that kind of thing."
