"Right," Anders said, once the class had assembled. "So, I don't know where Navaan is and I don't think I want to, but she was kind enough to leave a message telling me to run today as a movie day. The movie's about a writer whose protagonist comes to life and falls in love with him, which I hope isn't a problem any of us will experience as it sounds like it could get messy."

He gave the DVD setup a wary look. He knew how they worked in theory, but operating one on his own in front of people was another matter. But after some fumbling with remotes and buttons and only a few exasperated curses, he got the thing working and slid into his seat off to the side.

When Rick's class arrived at the Danger Shop, they would have found him dressed in black, standing over what looked an awful lot like his own corpse.

"Curses!" Rick exclaimed, stroking his new beard (that looked a lot like it had been drawn on with an eyebrow pencil). "My name is Dick Castle, long-lost twin of the late Rick Castle. Evil twin obviously. I was planning on killing my newly found, yet deeply hated brother and assuming his identity as a best-selling crime author, but you've come in at the worst possible moment, after I've committed the crime but before I could cover it up."

'Dick' paused for dramatic effect. "Clearly the only thing to do is help me hide the corpse, then you'll all pass and I'll get my new identity on. You'll all need to come up with ways to dispose of the body, and then we'll test out the feasibility of them."

Someone had a very odd idea of what constituted a final.

Today the Danger Shop was set up to resemble the ground floor of Efferton Manor, complete with boarded up windows from the weekend.

And the not-so-faint sound of singing.

"Morning kids," Rick greeted them in what could best be described as an overly cheerful manner. "Not all experiences a writer draws upon are positive ones, some are sad, some are traumatic, some are just really annoying." Guess which of the three today's class was going to focus on.

"Now as you may have heard, we currently have some interesting visitors to the island, much less horrifying than the last batch." Unless you had a deathly fear of Canadian divas, that was. "They are however quite loud, and quite persistent. What I want you to do this class is just wander about the house, doing whatever takes your fancy, you just can't go outside, or get away from the singing. While you're doing that, every so often, take note of how you and your classmates tolerate the constant noise."

"Then think about what might happen if you had to listen for more than one class. Or more than a day. Weeks. Years. What would you do to stop the noise? What wouldn't you do?"

In a stunning and unexpected change, Rick was actually there at the start of class, albeit looking somewhat the worse for wear. There was also coffee and moddable pastries, lots of both.

"Morning kids," he greeted the class. "Sorry about missing the last few classes, but I was unavoidably detained." Well, that was one way of putting it.

"Today's class is going to have two parts," Rick continued. "Firstly we're going to do a kind of brainstorming session, talking a bit about ourselves, you know skills you might have, the kind of things you'd carry around with you on a random day when you're off campus, that sort of thing. After we've done that, you're each going to dash off a quick story synopsis about being stuck down a hole in the woods with your classmates. How you might use your various skills and items as a team to survive until you either escape or are rescued."

"At the end of the class, you'll share your outlines with the rest of the class, so we can get an idea of how different people can take the same basic information and interpret it in wildly different ways through the lens of their own personality and experience."

Rick was not in the classroom today, rather like he hadn't been in class last week. This time, though, there was someone to replace him. Or at least stand in for him. That someone was the Doctor, a man who looked to be in his 20s with a thing for tweed and bow ties.

"Hello! Your teacher is missing. Nothing to be alarmed about, though my TAs are missing too, so perhaps there is. Not sure. I should find out." He'd been busy with things. "I will find out," he assured them. "But not now, because we have a class to teach. Me to teach, you to learn. The Pen is Mightier. It doesn't say what it's mightier than, but the power of the word is very mighty indeed, so let's agree with that. I'm the Doctor, by the way, in case you didn't know and need to call for help. I don't know what you'll need to call for help for, but it never hurts to be prepared.

We won't be writing today, so you can put your pens away, but every good story that's been written down started out in someone's head or someone telling a story out loud to someone else. They turn into novels or short stories or sometimes urban legends or myths. I have a few myths about myself around the place, though only part of them are true. So here we go. There are only a few of you, we should be able to manage this. We're going to come up with a story, off the top of our heads, doesn't matter how detailed or simple it is. You start. Say it out loud for everyone to hear and then pass it off to the next person to continue when you're done. We'll keep going round and round until we're finished."
[identity profile] cuff-me-once.livejournal.com
When Rick had informed his class to meet him in the Danger Shop and unlike last week, he was actually there on time. Albeit without the coffee and pastries.

He was also wearing the full protective gear for fencing and carrying an Épée. "The pen might be mightier than the sword," he began. "But the sword is just as much fun, and also provides a good example of what I'm talking about in using your experiences to add to the creative process. Now there's a couple of different things for you to do today, you can put on some protective gear and practice fencing against each other or the Danger Shop. There are also various kinds of swords for you to look at and handle."

For maybe the first time ever in a class, Rick's tone hardened into what Alexis called his Dad Voice. "The safeties are on, but you should still treat everything in this room like real weapons and not like toys, especially those of you who decide to fence each other. Don't be idiots or we'll spend the rest of the summer in the library doing research. Real boring research."

"What I want you to do while you're doing all this is to take note of what you're doing, what it feels it, then start imagining the what ifs," Rick continued in his regular voice. "For example, try fencing, then compare the weight of an Épée to a small sword or rapier, and consider how much more effort you'd need to use them instead. Think about how you might use a katana differently to a claymore. Notice how your field of vision is changed in the fencing mask and imagine how much less you'd see in the visor slits of a knight's helmet. You get my drift."

"Now by next week, I'd like you to all have written something using the prompt 'sword-fight'. You can interpret the prompt however you like, and it doesn't have to be long, it can be a haiku if you want, but you have to use your experience in today's class to inform your writing."

Rick's class would have arrived to find an empty classroom. This was because Rick had forgotten to allow enough time to make a coffee run before class started.

Late Rick is late! And wordy! )

Chloe had a plate of cookies sitting on the desk next to her, as well as some sodas, and a box of tissues. The tissues were just for decoration though, because she wasn't getting sniffly or anything. The fact that all the missing tissues were currently in her hand was a total coincidence.

Week 7: Romance )
mycanonhatesme: (chloe loves writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
Chloe looks far, far too pleased for this early on a Tuesday morning, especially since she doesn't even appear to have coffee in front of her.

Week 6: Fanfiction )
mycanonhatesme: (chloe loves writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
If Anders and Kaylee arrived early enough, they might have caught Chloe checking herself out in a compact mirror. She didn't look like she was fixing her hair as much as she was pressing her hands onto her scalp like she expected there to be something on top of her head.

Week 5: Poetry )

[Posted early because I will be internet-less tomorrow until 5PM Eastern.]
mycanonhatesme: (joy of writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
As everyone came into class, Chloe was sitting up at the front of the room on her cell phone. She wasn't actually saying anything, but occasionally she would roll her eyes and look a bit like she wanted to stab the phone antenna into her head.

"Yeah I--okay I'll look into it--yes, I promise--I know, I still owe you for getting rid of the ticket--yeah--yeah--look, I have a class to teach, can I call you back?" She didn't appear to wait for an answer to that last question before snapping the phone shut and hanging up. "Consider this your first lesson of the day - unless you absolutely have to, don't use cops as journalistic sources."

Week 4: Gossip )
mycanonhatesme: (joy of writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
Chloe was tapping away at her laptop when class started, browsing through Amazon. Five months was not too early to start a Christmas list, no matter what her father tried to argue. She gave everyone a few minutes to show up before she started talking.

Week 3: News Stories )

[I'm going to be unavailable for interaction until 5pm EST today. *sigh*]
mycanonhatesme: (joy of writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
Chloe was totally awake for class this morning. Of course, the fact that she was clinging to her coffee cup like it was her best friend probably had something to do with that.

Week 2: Obituaries )
mycanonhatesme: (joy of writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
Like the beginning of the last session of classes, Chloe had set herself up in the Journalism classroom, and was waiting happily for her students to arrive.

Week 1: Biographies )
mycanonhatesme: (joy of writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
Chloe was sitting at the front of the room as everyone came in, decked out in her patriotic best. There was a plate of cookies next to her, with a little note telling everyone to take one when they signed in. Surely it was there in celebration of July 4th, and not to distract everyone from noticing her wicked grin of glee.

Week 7: Romance )

[Posted early so those who won't be around have a chance to play.]
mycanonhatesme: (joy of writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
Chloe was back on the laptop this morning when everyone came in, drinking what was clearly not her first cup of coffee.

Week 6: Fanfiction )
mycanonhatesme: (joy of writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
As everyone came into the classroom, Chloe was looking through the books that she'd pulled from the library for today's class, and giggling madly. Should that be taken as a foreboding sign? Quite possibly, yes.

Week 5: Poetry )

[Posted early because I can make no guarantees about my availability today - my brother is graduating from high school (*sniff!*) so I'm not going to be around for interaction until sometime in the evening.]
mycanonhatesme: (joy of writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
Chloe was on her laptop again when everyone came in, but she wasn't doing anything other than staring at the screen as though she wanted to type something, but couldn't remember what.

Week 4: Gossip )
mycanonhatesme: (joy of writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
Chloe was on her laptop when everyone started coming into the classroom, checking various news sources for 6/6/06 madness. Once everyone had arrived, she finally set the laptop aside.

Week 3: News Stories )
mycanonhatesme: (joy of writing)

Chloe was grinning as everyone came into the classroom, looking as though she'd had a very good weekend.

"Hey everyone! Welcome back. I'm glad to see you all survived the first week, and decided to come back." She may have given Cameron and Janet a special smile there. "So, last week we talked about writing biographies. This week, we're going to be flipping a bit and talking about obituaries. Sadly, everyone has to die someday - at least, they do where I come from."

"What I want you to do today is write an obituary, either for yourself, or for someone else." Chloe smirked. "Feel free to write about someone who you wish was dead, because I certainly won't hold that against you."
mycanonhatesme: (joy of writing)
[personal profile] mycanonhatesme
Chloe greeted each of the students as they followed the handwavied instructions and came into the Journalism classroom. Anyone who had been in here during the last semester might notice that all traces of Rita had been removed; the room had definitely become Chloe's domain.

"Good morning," she said brightly, distributing a syllabus to everyone. "Welcome to the writing workshop. For anyone I haven't met extensively yet, I'm Chloe Sullivan. Please, please call me Chloe, because any of that 'Ms. Sullivan' stuff is just going to remind me that I'm old and I have to leave this place at the end of the summer."

Grissom is in a shockingly jovial mood. He's even rocking a costume and has candy (without bugs) for his students. Must have some good Halloween childhood memories buried somewhere.

Criminology

Here is the study guide for your midterm exam. [it will be an 'essay question', but feel free to study/stress]

To review, in class today I would like you to discuss one thing you have learned in this class so far, and how it either surprised you, or changed your mind in regards to a certain topic. If that is not the case in any aspect, why not?

Death and Dying

Discussion: Your homework was to Choose a death by suicide from Shakespeare's work, and share a short reaction to it. Please do so.

Your midterm exam will be on Wednesday! It will be an in-class essay, in a similar vein to the homework you are turning in. Using what you have learned in class, and moving on to our accidental death chapter, please analyze A Darwin Award Winner or Honourable Mention. You may bring in notes on one 3x5 index card.
