"We're doing cupcakes today, ladies and gentlemen," Alysha announced once everyone was assembled. "Yeah, I know we've already decorated them, but making some kind of cake's an important thing to know how to do, and cupcakes are just cuter than a regular cake."

She passed out a small booklet filled with cupcake recipes to each student. "This is yours to keep. There'll be more recipes for you next week to take with and experiment on, but for now, pick one of the cupcake recipes and go for it. I'm around if you have any questions."

"Hopefully you all enjoyed your surprise week off last week," Alysha said once the class was assembled in the Home Ec room. "I'm sorry you missed a class though, and I'll see what I can do about making it up."

At each of the cooking stations was a saran-wrapped ball of pastry dough along with a rolling pin and mat and two pie plates. The island in the center of the room had a selection of fruits.

"What we're doing today is making pie," she explained. "Just basic fruit pie, nothing crazy. I've made everyone enough dough for a double crust pie - that's like an apple pie where there's the crust on the bottom and also covering the fruit. If you want to try your own pie crust as well, there's a recipe at your station that's pretty close to the one I use." Except the aunties would have a conniption fit at the idea of using shortening instead of lard in a pie crust. Thankfully they weren't there. No really, no one wanted that.

"First, go ahead and figure out what kind of pie you want to make. There's a bunch of different pie filling recipes up here to work from. Then roll out your pie crust, fill it, and pop it in the oven."

"As always, I'm around if you have any questions at all. I'd recommend the blueberries or rhubarb if you're not sure what fruit to use. They're both in season. Apple's always good too though."

Alysha was still cursing (but not too loudly, even 1,000 miles away, that was just asking for trouble) the 'family emergency' that had dragged her back home last week. It was less an 'emergency' than the aunties being a little peckish, and it would have been much more manageable if she hadn't just been back for the Ritual on May 1.

"Welcome back, everybody," she said, once they were assembled in the Home Ec room. "I'm sorry I couldn't be here last week, and thank you very much to Sookie for ably taking over the class. We're going to continue our look at the simpler baked goods today by making cookies. Cookies are generally pretty easy. You cream butter with sugar, add flour and any other ingredients and bake 'em for about 10 minutes." Alysha, as always, had a view of baking that didn't really include the possibility of failure.

"If you haven't made cookies before or you're not comfortable with it, I'd suggest you stick with making chocolate chip cookies or snickerdoodles today. They both have just a few ingredients and don't require anything more than a spoon to mix. If you have more experience or you're just feeling adventurous, choose a recipe from the book on the table and go to. Anything you need is either already on the tables or in the refrigerator. The butter's already softened and on your workstations as are copies of both the chocolate chip and snickerdoodle recipes."

"Any questions for the class? Okay, find a partner to work with if you like, and i'll be wandering around if you run into any troubles."

When students filed into the Home Ec room, they'd notice that instead of Alysha, a younger and less confident blonde would be leading class today. Sookie stood at the front of the classroom, about a dozen muffins on a platter before her. She'd done her homework, thanks.

"Hey, everyone!" Sookie said, waving cheerfully and keeping her shields as steadfastly in place as she could. "Um, Ms. Gale couldn't make it today, so I'm going to fill in. For those who don't know, or don't remember me from last week, or whatever, I'm Sookie. And since last week we did cupcakes -- or decorated them, at least -- I figured this week we'd go with something similar to kind of go with 'em: muffins."

She picked up a perfectly-crafted blueberry muffin, showing it to the class. "This little guy is like a cupcake you can eat for breakfast. They often have fruit and nuts and things, but sometimes you can just make straight-up chocolate muffins, and those are good, too. And again, basically naked cupcakes that you can get away with eating for breakfast."

She clapped her hands together, and gestured to a stack of papers. "Figured we'd take it kind of easy today. Pick out a muffin recipe that you think is suited to your skill level, and try and make a full dozen of them. Ingredients are moddable in the fridge or pantry, and feel free to work with a partner. I'm around if you need help."

She paused, and worriedly added, "Please don't set yourselves on fire if you can help it."
