Magic of Baking [Week 2, Period 3]
When students filed into the Home Ec room, they'd notice that instead of Alysha, a younger and less confident blonde would be leading class today. Sookie stood at the front of the classroom, about a dozen muffins on a platter before her. She'd done her homework, thanks.
"Hey, everyone!" Sookie said, waving cheerfully and keeping her shields as steadfastly in place as she could. "Um, Ms. Gale couldn't make it today, so I'm going to fill in. For those who don't know, or don't remember me from last week, or whatever, I'm Sookie. And since last week we did cupcakes -- or decorated them, at least -- I figured this week we'd go with something similar to kind of go with 'em: muffins."
She picked up a perfectly-crafted blueberry muffin, showing it to the class. "This little guy is like a cupcake you can eat for breakfast. They often have fruit and nuts and things, but sometimes you can just make straight-up chocolate muffins, and those are good, too. And again, basically naked cupcakes that you can get away with eating for breakfast."
She clapped her hands together, and gestured to a stack of papers. "Figured we'd take it kind of easy today. Pick out a muffin recipe that you think is suited to your skill level, and try and make a full dozen of them. Ingredients aremoddable in the fridge or pantry, and feel free to work with a partner. I'm around if you need help."
She paused, and worriedly added, "Please don't set yourselves on fire if you can help it."

Re: Listen to the Lecture! [05/19]
Alex was a special girl, oh yes.
Re: Listen to the Lecture! [05/19]
Sounds perfect.
Re: Listen to the Lecture! [05/19]
She hoped there was a really simple recipe in the bunch.

Make your muffins! [05/19]
Re: Make your muffins! [05/19]
Well, that was until he found the parsnips and held one up to look at it, wondering how he was going to incorporate vegetables without this turning into some sort of dinner muffin. Hmm.
Re: Make your muffins! [05/19]
Every so often, Alex may have sneaked a couple of chocolate chips into her mouth. One for every chip she added to the batter. What? She loved chocolate!

Okay, next she needed stone-ground cornmeal. She found the cornmeal quickly enough, but couldn't tell if it had been stone-ground. No matter! Karla was nothing if not a problem-solver. She slipped outside just long enough to find two decent-sized rocks and then returned to grind the cornmeal a bit further.
After washing them, of course. Sanitation first!
In the bowl, the butter continued to bubble. And melt. And then start to burn...
Re: Make your muffins! [05/19]
She was a bit stymied about what to do next--which was when she smelled the scorching butter. "Awww, Hells fire!" she cursed, waving the witchfire away. Fortunately, there was still some butter left under the scorched skin. Not enough to use...
And then inspiration struck. She'd simply mix the remaining butter in with some milk to make the buttermilk--while melting more butter for the recipe, of course.
Genius!
Re: Make your muffins! [05/19]
There were only a few left, and they looked pretty small, so Karla decided to use them all, rather than leaving one or two behind to spoil. It was like the produce equivalent of leaving a few tablespoons of milk left in the jug.
Of course, Karla hadn't realized just what cutting jalapenos was like. "My hands are burning!" she whimpered, halfway through cutting up the first one. Also, the watering of her eyes made it hard to set the temperature on the oven correctly.
475 was close enough, right?
Re: Make your muffins! [05/19]
There was no way this could end badly.
Re: Make your muffins! [05/19]
Of course, she doubled the recipe because there were a few people that she wanted to share them with.
While she was melting the butter over a low tongue of witchfire, she started carefully mixing the dry ingredients together as the recipe said.

Oh, no -- leave it to Sara Stanley to inadvertently put Cream of Wheat into the cornbread muffin (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Cornbread-Muffins-with-Maple-Butter-237892) mix instead of cornmeal, and nearly set herself on fire when she spilled the melted butter on herself.
A deft hand with a fairy tale the Story Girl might be, but in the kitchen, as always, she was a sorry failure.
She chose to find some comfort in the consistency of it all. What else was there to do?
Re: Make your muffins! [05/19]
The tea wasn't crushed nearly enough--Rilla had gotten distracted by seeing what her classmates were doing--and the muffins turned out slightly scorched (again, distraction), but nothing was set on fire, so Rilla was absurdly proud of herself.
Re: Make your muffins! [05/19]
She burned the butter, didn't find enough dark chocolate and had to use some white as well, added way too many raspberries, and kept opening the oven door to check on them. And yet, in the end, she had muffins.
A bit gooey in the center and maybe a few had severely charred berries sticking from the top and sides, but they were muffins!
