Magic of Baking [Week 2, Period 3]

When students filed into the Home Ec room, they'd notice that instead of Alysha, a younger and less confident blonde would be leading class today. Sookie stood at the front of the classroom, about a dozen muffins on a platter before her. She'd done her homework, thanks.

"Hey, everyone!" Sookie said, waving cheerfully and keeping her shields as steadfastly in place as she could. "Um, Ms. Gale couldn't make it today, so I'm going to fill in. For those who don't know, or don't remember me from last week, or whatever, I'm Sookie. And since last week we did cupcakes -- or decorated them, at least -- I figured this week we'd go with something similar to kind of go with 'em: muffins."

She picked up a perfectly-crafted blueberry muffin, showing it to the class. "This little guy is like a cupcake you can eat for breakfast. They often have fruit and nuts and things, but sometimes you can just make straight-up chocolate muffins, and those are good, too. And again, basically naked cupcakes that you can get away with eating for breakfast."

She clapped her hands together, and gestured to a stack of papers. "Figured we'd take it kind of easy today. Pick out a muffin recipe that you think is suited to your skill level, and try and make a full dozen of them. Ingredients are moddable in the fridge or pantry, and feel free to work with a partner. I'm around if you need help."

She paused, and worriedly added, "Please don't set yourselves on fire if you can help it."

For whatever reason, Alex found Sookie's plea to not set themselves on fire funny.

Alex was a special girl, oh yes.

Karla happily flipped through the muffin recipe. After the amount of baking she'd done last year, she felt confident in putting aside the easy recipes and looking at the more advanced ones. Ooooh, Cheddar Corn Muffins with JalapeƱo Butter?

Sounds perfect.

Momoko muttered a quick, "I'll totally try not to," in response to Sookie's plea. Really, she'd never set herself on fire (or anyone else, even) but there totally had to be a first time.

She hoped there was a really simple recipe in the bunch.

Rilla gave Sookie a shy wave. If she's had to run a class all by herself, she would have just died of embarrassment, she was sure of it.

Griff found a simple recipe for...okay he wasn't sure what a parsnip was but it was going in a muffin and surely they would taste fine.

Well, that was until he found the parsnips and held one up to look at it, wondering how he was going to incorporate vegetables without this turning into some sort of dinner muffin. Hmm.

Alex looked through the recipes until she found one she liked. Chocolate lava muffins, oh yeah! It was a simple enough recipe and she found it easy to follow the directions.

Every so often, Alex may have sneaked a couple of chocolate chips into her mouth. One for every chip she added to the batter. What? She loved chocolate!

So, the first ingredient was melted butter. Karla could do that, easy! She put a few sticks of butter into one of the bowls and then lit a small tongue of witchfire on top of them. They'd melt in no time.

Okay, next she needed stone-ground cornmeal. She found the cornmeal quickly enough, but couldn't tell if it had been stone-ground. No matter! Karla was nothing if not a problem-solver. She slipped outside just long enough to find two decent-sized rocks and then returned to grind the cornmeal a bit further.

After washing them, of course. Sanitation first!

In the bowl, the butter continued to bubble. And melt. And then start to burn...

The burning butter hadn't quite made it to Karla's attention yet. She gathered all the other ingredients she needed for the muffin base, save for the buttermilk, which she simply couldn't find.

She was a bit stymied about what to do next--which was when she smelled the scorching butter. "Awww, Hells fire!" she cursed, waving the witchfire away. Fortunately, there was still some butter left under the scorched skin. Not enough to use...

And then inspiration struck. She'd simply mix the remaining butter in with some milk to make the buttermilk--while melting more butter for the recipe, of course.

Genius!

Karla wasn't entirely certain why there were jalapenos in the fridge, but she was just going to go for it. They were a requirement for her muffins and she was going to use them.

There were only a few left, and they looked pretty small, so Karla decided to use them all, rather than leaving one or two behind to spoil. It was like the produce equivalent of leaving a few tablespoons of milk left in the jug.

Of course, Karla hadn't realized just what cutting jalapenos was like. "My hands are burning!" she whimpered, halfway through cutting up the first one. Also, the watering of her eyes made it hard to set the temperature on the oven correctly.

475 was close enough, right?

And of course none of these recipes were written in D'Haran, that would have been too easy. Still, if she kept an eye on her classmates and copied what they were doing, she should be able to come up with something. It might even be edible.

There was no way this could end badly.

Cassidy had found the recipe that she thought looked really good, Spiced Pumpkin Muffins (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Spiced-Pumpkin-Muffins-107257), and she immediately started mixing together ingredients.

Of course, she doubled the recipe because there were a few people that she wanted to share them with.

While she was melting the butter over a low tongue of witchfire, she started carefully mixing the dry ingredients together as the recipe said.

After the mortification of the half-risen bread and the sawdust pudding, Sara was reasonably certain that muffins, at least, couldn't be all that difficult. After all, there was no kneading involved, and no reason for her to forget to set anything to rise.

Oh, no -- leave it to Sara Stanley to inadvertently put Cream of Wheat into the cornbread muffin (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Cornbread-Muffins-with-Maple-Butter-237892) mix instead of cornmeal, and nearly set herself on fire when she spilled the melted butter on herself.

A deft hand with a fairy tale the Story Girl might be, but in the kitchen, as always, she was a sorry failure.

She chose to find some comfort in the consistency of it all. What else was there to do?

Rilla might have been a wee bit ambitious with an Earl Grey tea muffin (http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/earl-grey-tea-muffins).

The tea wasn't crushed nearly enough--Rilla had gotten distracted by seeing what her classmates were doing--and the muffins turned out slightly scorched (again, distraction), but nothing was set on fire, so Rilla was absurdly proud of herself.

Momoko stared at the selection of recipes for a moment before actually sifting through them. She finally found a very simple recipe that seemed like something she couldn't ruin too badly. Of course right behind it was one for raspberry dark chocolate ones. She couldn't resist.

She burned the butter, didn't find enough dark chocolate and had to use some white as well, added way too many raspberries, and kept opening the oven door to check on them. And yet, in the end, she had muffins.

A bit gooey in the center and maybe a few had severely charred berries sticking from the top and sides, but they were muffins!
