"Welcome to your Criminal Justice final, everyone," Zayne said. He looked a little uncomfortable in his uniform. He wasn't opposed to wearing uniforms - he went to Jedi school, after all - but he preferred something a lot looser. Like robes! And without a tie. Like Jedi robes! Oh well.

"Just as a refresher for the semester as a whole, being a criminal is bad. Being a fugitive from justice is not something to aspire to. Try to stay on the right side of the law," Zayne said. "Got it? Good. Here's an exam. No cheating, please, although I doubt I have to say that here." Yep, a joke to lighten the mood before handing out exams that the students would only be prepared for if they had spent any time scouring television and the internet for information on the American justice system that could reasonably be faked into an exam, just like Zayne had done the past few days.

The results were maybe a little less than ideal, but he tried. And who knows? He might even get some interesting answers. And if nothing else, this might give the students some experiencing in BSing authority figures, which would always be a handy skill on the run.

"Well, next week is exams," Zayne said. "And that means this week's topic is pretty obvious. After you've been on the run for weeks, months, maybe years, hopefully there comes a time when you're finally able to prove that you're innocent. Or that you're the rightful monarch. Or you're able to overthrow the corrupt law that's been chasing you. If these are current issues in your life, I sincerely hope that I've at least given you some insight into how to deal with your struggle personally, if not in the greater scheme of things."

FREEDOM! )

"If you're on the run, odds are that you're eventually going to end up in a fight," Zayne said. "No matter how much you try to avoid it, somebody will eventually catch up to you and your fight or flight instincts will somehow be reduced to just fight or give up."

"And when your life is on the line in a fight, there may very well come a point where you need to decide to put someone else's life on the line in response. It might be that time is desperately limited, or you're fighting too many people or people who are too strong for you to justify pulling your punches, or you just might not be too concerned about their well-being in general. End up in enough fights and eventually you'll end up in a situation where killing someone is an option. Maybe even the best, most reasonable option."

In which the peace-loving hippie asks if you'd kill someone. )

[OOC: Obviously, this class on questioning potential lethality as opposed to directly risking one's own life is kind of a Big Topic. If your character won't or can't participate in analyzing their own potential on the subject, that's absolutely fine.]

"You have to be able to trust people. That's a big thing in general every day life, but when you're relying on a few people to help you stay out of prison, it becomes a much bigger thing," Zayne said. "But when everything is heightened like that, you can't trust people implicitly without good reason."

Trust )

"Easy class today, everyone," Zayne said. "I like to call this one 'What Not To Do.' In order to learn that, we're going to watch a strangely popular TV show called COPS."

"Some key points to consider. Don't stay where the police will almost certainly find you. Stay in shape just in case you need to run away. Treat your friends and family with respect so they don't have to call the police on you. And most importantly, try to keep a pair of pants handy, if not actually on you. You don't want to be chased halfway around town in your underwear."

Why yes, Zayne had just found out about this show. And he couldn't stop watching reruns.

It was either this or hear about how one of his crew members was secretly an evil psychopath who ran an expert long con on him and, well, this was more fun.

"So, we're going to do something that I hope you find fun today. Just... maybe not too fun," Zayne said. They were in a normal classroom again, and there was a small device on Zayne's desk. Any students familiar with Jedi designs might think it looked like a particularly ancient holographic projector.

"Early on in my life as a fugitive, right after I turned myself in the first time and my friends rescued me, we were able to take advantage of our starship and some incidental chaos... by which I mean rioting caused by planetary unrest because I got away... twice... Anyway, we used that to put some distance and about a week's worth of time between me and my Masters. But we needed some more time. We needed to scare them off from even considering coming after us. We needed to make a serious threat."

"Good afternoon," Zayne said to start things off. Normal classroom today. It was going to be a discussion class! "A few weeks ago, I mentioned a situation where I turned myself in to Republic forces. I'd like to talk a little more about that and, hopefully, get us to a point where we talk about when the best thing is to stop running."

This class features discussion of the nuclear bombardment of a planet and why predestination sucks. Be warned. )

[OOC Warning: Seriously, in this class, Zayne talks pretty plainly about the deaths of thousands of people in an orbital nuclear bombardment. IC or OOC non-participation is understandable.]

Class was in the Danger Shop today. Zayne and the students were standing on a platform on a skyscraper in what certainly looked to be an alien planet of some sort. But aside from an ocean in the distance, it didn't look like there was anything here but city as far as they eye could see.

"Okay, everyone. Today's class was an inevitability from the time this class started. And since you could probably use something fun two days after break, I think it was about time," Zayne said. "So today we're going to have some fun with high speed chases."

"Really, being chased was my immediate present and future back when I first saw what my teachers did to my classmates. They chased me through our school building until I got to my swoop bike and led them on a chase through the city. We tore through the sky, some buildings, down garbage chutes... It was pretty intense. And it all happened here in this city."

"Well, a few square blocks of it and some nice backgrounds in the distance," Zayne amended. "But this is roughly what Taris looks like. It's the planet I grew up and trained as a Jedi on. And if there's one thing Taris is known for, it's swoop bikes. If you're not familiar with them, they're like motorcycles here on Earth, but they fly. And there are some right behind you." Zayne pressed a button on the shop remote and a swoop appeared for everyone in the class.

"I may have made the point several times that I was always a terrible student. But to make up for that, I've also always been a great swoop rider. So I'm going to run you through some of the basics of piloting a swoop, then let you have some fun around the few blocks I was able to make in the shop. Three basic tips right away? Be mindful of your surroundings, try not to crash unless you really mean it, and remember that you're not going to get hurt here. But you really could if you were doing this for real."

"Oh, and if you have a good handle for what you're doing halfway through class, I'll let you race a partner to start to get a feel for the chase itself."
[identity profile] cataclysmicluck.livejournal.com
Class was in the Danger Shop today. And the shop was... a large, white expanse.

In what seemed to be roughly the center of the expanse, Zayne was sitting on the floor with his legs crossed. "Hey everyone. Just go ahead and have a seat on the ground. Feel free to space yourselves out a little, too."

"I'll explain this in more depth in a later class, but there was a point where I turned myself in to the Republic to avert a disaster," Zayne said, leading class off on a joyful note this week of all weeks. "It... didn't really work. And then I was a prisoner on a Republic cruiser for a week while the cruiser was fleeing the Mandalorian fleet. It was kind of insane, from what I understand."

"Obviously, I was in the brig, so I didn't know much of anything that was happening. And not knowing while being in solitary confinement probably would have driven me insane, except for one thing. I could still meditate," Zayne said. "Its not something I've ever been great at, just sitting there and doing nothing in an extremely active way. But when you have no other choice, you get good. Or you go nuts."

Meditation: Because Zayne's a damn hippie who thinks it might help if you let go of this week's tension in a boring way. )

The class may have gotten the impression that something was up when Zayne sent a message to meet in the gym and wear old - but not necessarily workout - clothes. When they arrived, they would find the track with hurdles, chairs, and garbage cans filled with soft debris scattered around.

"Glad you could make it, everyone," he said with a grin. "As you might imagine, part of living life on the run is, on occasion, running. And you're not going to get ideal conditions for it, either, which is why you're in regular clothes and there's debris all over the track."

"I'm going to ask you to do at least three laps, more if you want. First a warm up lap to get a feel for where everything is in the name of safety and planning. Then a lap were someone's chasing you. Finally, a lap where you're chasing someone else. The goals are simple. Do a full lap without being tagged with two hands. Or, when you're trying to catch the other person, do so before they cross the finish line. You don't have to run straight. Feel free to run off into a slant to go over or barrel through an obstacle to slow your pursuer down."

"A few rules. The runners will get a 10 second head start. Except for the Jedi. I want to see what they can do with only a couple seconds. Sorry, guys," Zayne said. "It's two-hand touch. The pursuer needs to get both hands on the runner to count them as being caught. And you have to stay on the track, completing one full lap. And no fighting. If you push, punch, or do anything else of the sort, you lose."

"For this kind of class, I can only give a couple tips. First, get familiar with your surroundings as quickly as possible. Try to think at least one move ahead of what you're doing, but don't let the planning keep you from knowing what's going on around you. Go ahead and use your environment. And remember: no matter what the odds look like, your pursuer has to react to you. Even if they're good at trying to herd you, all they have to work with is what you give them."

"Good luck and have some fun."
[identity profile] cataclysmicluck.livejournal.com
"One of the more pressing issues when you're on the run is the fact that you still need to eat," Zayne said, opening class with a lovely thought. And being on the run, you probably don't have access to much wealth, so you're going to have to do something if you want to survive."

Food Day! )
[identity profile] cataclysmicluck.livejournal.com
Zayne's class was taking place in the Danger Shop this week. It was programmed to look, sound, and even smell like a vile hive of scum and villainy... Well, maybe not EXACTLY like that since Zayne had never been to Tatooine. But it was clearly a place where lowlifes spent time.

Congratulations, lowlifes!

In which you hide in plain sight )
[identity profile] cataclysmicluck.livejournal.com
"Good afternoon," Zayne said. "So, funny thing happened this weekend. I felt it would be a good idea to start a bonfire somewhere as a protest against something and the only fuel I had was my class notes."

"So while I try to get myself reorganized, we're going to have a movie day a little earlier in the semester than I had planned. But part of survival is being able to change your plans at a moment's notice, so you get to see meta for The Fugitive. It's about a doctor framed for the murder of his wife, his escape from the law, and his search for justice."

[OOC: Sorry, I feel like hell, so I have to go with movie day.]
[identity profile] cataclysmicluck.livejournal.com
"Hey, everyone, welcome back," Zayne said. "Now that we're past the 'why' of my former status as a fugitive, we can start to get into more interesting things. Today I want to talk about friendships when you're on the run."

"Unfortunately, we have to start with a couple uncomfortable truths. When you're accused of a crime and run, it's going to convince a lot of people that you did it. That probably includes at least some people you know and love. And it's understandable," Zayne said. "If the authorities they've trusted all their lives say you did something and all they know is that you ran away, it's going to be tough for them to side with you. It hurts, but it happens. And maybe worse, even if they believe you, you might be putting them at risk if you rely on them. My Dad believed in my innocence, but then he ended up getting kidnapped as bait for me. Even if they're prepared to help you, they're probably not prepared for what that really means and what kind of danger they'll be in."

"So it's probably a good idea to make some friends on the wrong side of the law if you're there anyway. In some ways, it seems kind of like you're putting together a criminal crew. And... well, that's because that's exactly what it is," Zayne said. "It's part of the life if you want your best shot at surviving."

The Crew )

"Good afternoon, everyone," Zayne said shortly after the bell rang. He had a long history of tardiness himself, so he thought he'd give any tardy students a shot. "A few of you know me already. Actually, a couple of you work for me over at Goodvalor's. Hi, guys. Anyway, I guess I have some explaining to do so you know what I want to do with this class."

"My name is Zayne Carrick, but free to just call me Zayne since I only graduated from here a couple years ago. And once I did that, I went back to my galaxy to try to graduate from a Jedi Academy. If you don't know what a Jedi is, the short version is that they're a monastic order who try to keep peace in the galaxy with what you might think of as magic powers. It's a little more complicated than that, but if you want more information I'd be happy to tell you about it later. Or ask Master Anakin Skywalker, since he's actually a really good Jedi and I honestly had no real chance to even pass the tests."

And then he talked about how his friends were murdered. HAPPY FIRST DAY OF CLASS! )

[OOC: Warning for discussion of NPC deaths from over a year ago. It's brief and not graphic, I promise.

And I'll be going to sleep soon and then at work until evening. I'll ping if I can from work, but that's not terribly likely.]

Grissom is in a shockingly jovial mood. He's even rocking a costume and has candy (without bugs) for his students. Must have some good Halloween childhood memories buried somewhere.

Criminology

Here is the study guide for your midterm exam. [it will be an 'essay question', but feel free to study/stress]

To review, in class today I would like you to discuss one thing you have learned in this class so far, and how it either surprised you, or changed your mind in regards to a certain topic. If that is not the case in any aspect, why not?

Death and Dying

Discussion: Your homework was to Choose a death by suicide from Shakespeare's work, and share a short reaction to it. Please do so.

Your midterm exam will be on Wednesday! It will be an in-class essay, in a similar vein to the homework you are turning in. Using what you have learned in class, and moving on to our accidental death chapter, please analyze A Darwin Award Winner or Honourable Mention. You may bring in notes on one 3x5 index card.
