So You're a Fugitive From Justice, Tuesday, 3rd Period

"If you're on the run, odds are that you're eventually going to end up in a fight," Zayne said. "No matter how much you try to avoid it, somebody will eventually catch up to you and your fight or flight instincts will somehow be reduced to just fight or give up."

"And when your life is on the line in a fight, there may very well come a point where you need to decide to put someone else's life on the line in response. It might be that time is desperately limited, or you're fighting too many people or people who are too strong for you to justify pulling your punches, or you just might not be too concerned about their well-being in general. End up in enough fights and eventually you'll end up in a situation where killing someone is an option. Maybe even the best, most reasonable option."

"In the name of full disclosure, I haven't killed any living, sentient beings. Accidents have happened. Others have killed to protect me or because of information I gave them. One time, when two truly evil people were fighting each other to the death, just my being there as a witness led to them both dying," Zayne explained. "I started out refusing to kill just because, you know, it's what I was accused of and I didn't think killing my enemies at that point would help my case. But eventually everything I went through shaped my belief that I don't believe anyone - not myself, not the Jedi, not soldiers on either side of the war going on in my galaxy - has the right to determine that someone should die. I won't take a life and, if I have even the smallest opportunity, I'll do what I can to stop other people from doing that, too."

"But that's me. For the discussion today, I want you to think back to the movie we watched earlier this semester about the doctor falsely accused of killing his wife. After a chase by a good, reasonably moral officer who's just trying to keep the public safe and bring in an apparently dangerous fugitive, there's a moment where the doctor is backed up at the edge of a drainage pipe high above a body of water. The doctor's choices are to surrender, get shot, or jump and hope he doesn't die when he hits the water."

"Imagine you're in that situation, but you have a gun and are a decent shot. You could shoot the officer first, but if you shoot to wound he can probably get on his radio to call for backup. The other three options are still on the table. Would you shoot to kill?"

"Does your answer change at all if you're cornered by an officer you know to be dirty? Or if it's a mercenary instead of an officer? Or maybe it's the person who actually framed you. What if you don't have the option of leaping and hoping for the best? At what point do you think you would choose to take someone else's life as opposed to surrendering or taking a big risk that you'll lose yours?"

"I promise I won't judge no matter what you answer, even if it's completely against my views," Zayne said before opening up the topic for the students to discuss.

[OOC: Obviously, this class on questioning potential lethality as opposed to directly risking one's own life is kind of a Big Topic. If your character won't or can't participate in analyzing their own potential on the subject, that's absolutely fine.]

Ender mostly just felt exhausted listening to him talk. His personal wishes on the topic and his previous experience with it were far apart.

Ben was warring between what he thought was his truth and not horrifying Zayne with his horrible un-Jedi-ness.

"If there was a choice of escape or wounding something to then escape, I'd take it," he said. "But if there's not...I'd take the shot."
