So You're a Fugitive From Justice, Tuesday, 3rd Period
"One of the more pressing issues when you're on the run is the fact that you still need to eat," Zayne said, opening class with a lovely thought. And being on the run, you probably don't have access to much wealth, so you're going to have to do something if you want to survive."
"It helps a bit if you're in a forest or otherwise in the wilderness, assuming you know how to hunt and cook over a fire," Zayne said. "And start a fire, I guess."
"If you're like me and ended up partnered with a con artist anyway, stealing food also becomes an option. Depending on how immoral or desperate you feel, you can either go straight for a market or maybe try to sneak a meal from a restaurant." Zayne wasn't looking at anyone in particular on that point. "Or if you're feeling a little extra ambitious, you can do what we did."
"Gryph found a small Republic outpost that was due to be restocked. There weren't in real any danger of attack, and they wouldn't miss any food and supplies we took in another couple hours. So we faked an attack on the outpost, sent the scouts running for cover, and then restocked. It was actually a great plan with minimal inconvenience for anyone else," Zayne said. "Until an enemy army actually did attack the outpost while we were still there. But that's a different story."
"If you're going the free food route but don't want to out and out steal but don't mind going through garbage, most stores and restaurants end up throwing a lot of acceptable or even good food at the end of the work day. And if you're desperate, that can sound pretty good."
"But there's a way to get food that's completely sanitary and doesn't involve any real additional crimes. You can always get a job. Okay, that might involve some falsifying documents to create an alias, but if you're on the run there's a chance you've either done that or will do it anyway," Zayne said. "It might require settling down more than you want and it's almost certainly not permanent, but it can add a little bit of normalcy to a crazy situation. Plus, it'll allow you to eat."
"I spent a couple weeks working at a restaurant we established by accident, really," Zayne said. "It wasn't right for me because I needed to get back to trying to prove my innocence, but that restaurant eventually got franchised... and I'm still working at one of the franchises today," Zayne said. "I really don't know how I managed that."
"In short, you have to survive. When you're on the wrong side of the law, you have to figure out the best way for you to do so. Unfortunately, there's no real way to know which path you would take until you're actually in that situation, and there's no way for me to really simulate that kind of situation."
"So instead of anything like that, I'm just going to treat you to a buffet," Zayne said, as a couple of his droids from Goodvalor's entered the room with a table full of Earth food, plates, and silverware. "And remember to enjoy this kind of opportunity when it presents itself, just on the off-chance the future isn't so kind."
