So You're (No Longer) a Fugitive From Justice, Tuesday, 3rd Period

"Well, next week is exams," Zayne said. "And that means this week's topic is pretty obvious. After you've been on the run for weeks, months, maybe years, hopefully there comes a time when you're finally able to prove that you're innocent. Or that you're the rightful monarch. Or you're able to overthrow the corrupt law that's been chasing you. If these are current issues in your life, I sincerely hope that I've at least given you some insight into how to deal with your struggle personally, if not in the greater scheme of things."

"But like I said, hopefully it comes to an end. I was on the run for just shy of six months. And for me, that only happened after getting evidence of my Masters' crimes, having one of them confess, and taking part in a strike against the people behind the secret cabal that my Masters were a part of."

"Before all was said and done, each and every one of my Masters had died. Lucien - the one who had most directly failed to train me properly and who was the most aggressive in trying to murder me - came back from the edge of darkness to help me and bring down the man who was behind the whole Jedi Covenant."

"The Jedi Council and the Republic couldn't really admit that a conspiracy nearly took over both groups, and that it started because a group of trusted Jedi Masters went rogue and murdered their students out of paranoia, so they fabricated a story to tell the people that kept everyone's name clean and cleared mine at long last."

"I was the most wanted man in the galaxy for six months, just because I was good at escaping. With that off my shoulders, I was able to actually rejoin society. I had to figure out what I wanted to do with my life from that point on," Zayne said. "What do you do when you're now famous for being that guy who didn't kill those people?"

"Personally, I stuck by my friends. Who were, of course, criminals," Zayne said, with a shrug. "Not everyone was thrilled with that decision, least of all one of my old teachers here." Who shared a first name with one of his students, just in case people couldn't guess who he was thinking of. "But I had a new mission by then. There were too many people like me out there, who get beat up and torn apart by people with a lot more power than them, and who slipped through the cracks of the Jedi or the Republic. People who just need someone to help them."

"And so we found terrible people who made a lot of money oppressing people, and we did something about that. Usually by stealing a lot of that money, freeing the people they were oppressing, and using the money to help more people. That whole enterprise was tricky at best, so I'm sorry to say it didn't last as long as I would have liked. But it eventually led to me being here. And maybe I've helped some of you in some small way."

"And even if I haven't, you've helped me. By sharing, by listening, by having some fun when the topic allowed it. Thank you for that. I really appreciate it."

"Anyway, for a discussion today, let's play it simple. Once you're free of whatever's hanging over your head, whether it's criminal charges or even just high school, what do you want to do with your new-found freedom?"

Ben had put a lot of thought into this question.

"Go somewhere they've never even heard of Jedi," he said firmly, "and use what I've learned to make lives better."

Maybe not being Jedi turned them all into damned hippies?

Mord'Sith training strongly discouraged thoughts on this particular subject.

Cara sunk down in her chair, arms crossed, and shrugged. "Same thing I was doing before, protecting Richard."

"Go on a vacation," Ender said, a vague smile playing on his lips.

He was not being entirely truthful - or at all - but he figured that was vague enough to skate by Jedi senses.

Commit another felony? Kenzi considered. "See Europe again," she decided. And commit cooler felonies there.

"Find my mother's people," Surreal answered simply. "And find out why they never came for us."

...possibly stab a few of them, if she didn't like the answer.
