So You're a Fugitive From Justice, Tuesday, 3rd Period

"Good afternoon, everyone," Zayne said shortly after the bell rang. He had a long history of tardiness himself, so he thought he'd give any tardy students a shot. "A few of you know me already. Actually, a couple of you work for me over at Goodvalor's. Hi, guys. Anyway, I guess I have some explaining to do so you know what I want to do with this class."

"My name is Zayne Carrick, but free to just call me Zayne since I only graduated from here a couple years ago. And once I did that, I went back to my galaxy to try to graduate from a Jedi Academy. If you don't know what a Jedi is, the short version is that they're a monastic order who try to keep peace in the galaxy with what you might think of as magic powers. It's a little more complicated than that, but if you want more information I'd be happy to tell you about it later. Or ask Master Anakin Skywalker, since he's actually a really good Jedi and I honestly had no real chance to even pass the tests."

The light smile Zayne had up until now faded into a slight frown. "On the night of my class's commencement ceremony, I arrived late to find our teachers standing over the dead bodies of my classmates. My teachers murdered them because they thought there was a chance one of us would turn evil and bring ruin to the galaxy. They would have killed me, too, but thanks to a combination of luck and some friends I quickly made on the wrong side of the law, I escaped. Unfortunately, nobody in power believed my word over that of several Jedi Masters. So when they claimed that I committed the murders, I had to stay on the run until I could prove my innocence."

"I did manage that," Zayne said. "Eventually. But it wasn't easy, and I barely survived it. And that's why I'm here now. Fandom sometimes attracts the kind of people who would end up in a situation like mine, and there's no reason for you to go through what I did unprepared. Just because luck broke my way doesn't mean that's something you can count on."

"Or there's always the chance that you have a legitimate reason to actually break the law, like fighting back against a corrupt regime, or maybe you're some kind of vigilante who only breaks the law to help people in need. Hopefully you'll get a few good tips from this class to fight the good fight."

"But I have no interest in helping people just looking out for themselves selfishly," Zayne said, giving the class a serious look. "If you're looking to use this class to help yourself get away with crimes solely for personal gain, I suggest leaving now and going to the office for a class drop form." Fortunately, nobody here knew how much of a hypocrite he was being. At least he could somewhat justify his foray into crime due to his Robin Hood tendencies, but that still wasn't something you wanted to be called out on during your first day.

"For everyone who's staying, I'm sorry, but we're going to have to start with introductions. After all, with this kind of class, it's probably best to know why you're here," Zayne said. "Share whatever you think you can safely. But if you outright lie, I'll know. I wasn't the best but I did go through Jedi training, and I can see through lies very easily."

Which was, of course, at least a partial lie. He was terrible at reading intentions with the Force. But he had spent a year training under one of the best con men in the galaxy, so he probably would be able to pick out almost any liar unless they were really good.

"Let's start with you," Zayne said, picking someone at random. "Who are you and why are you here? Or, possibly, what are you planning on doing that this stuff might come in handy?"

[OOC: Warning for discussion of NPC deaths from over a year ago. It's brief and not graphic, I promise.

And I'll be going to sleep soon and then at work until evening. I'll ping if I can from work, but that's not terribly likely.]

Anakin had perked up when Zayne started to introduce himself, but as the story went on his expression faded into one somewhere between horrified and shellshocked.

Because surely the Order couldn't have done that, could it?

Except he didn't sense anything deceptive about Zayne's story in the Force, and . . . he really had no idea what to do about this.

Kate slanted a look at the slightly distressed looking guy next to her. "You reckon he's always this upbeat?" she murmured dryly.

Lightening the mood, that was what she was doing. It was how she dealt with bad things, maybe it worked for other people.

That sounded so very familiar. Not that Kate had been a victim of the kind of situation yet, but she could imagine it as easy as anything.

Religion-based organisations were the same across all dimensions, it would seem.

"Hi. I'm Annie Edison, which you know," she said with a smile, "and um. I don't think I was supposed to be in this class? But you know, that's okay. That's totally fine. I'm sure I'll learn a lot!"

And she'd be very happy that she'd already submitted her applications so they'd be less likely to wonder what she was doing with her last semester.

"I'm Toby Logan, which you also knew," he said, echoing Annie's statement. "And I'm here because, the thing is, I'm pretty much on my own, so I figure there might be some skills that could come in handy. Not that I plan on becoming a fugitive from justice, but, well..." he shrugged. He'd met Zayne during an attempt to do a dine-and-dash at Goodvalor's. That kind of spoke to Toby's tendency to get in over his head sometimes.

"My name's Anakin Solo," he said with a slight sigh as he stood and ran a hand through his hair. "I'm --"

He paused like he was thinking better of what he was about to say. "I'm here because as a Jedi there's a good chance I'm going to end up on the run from somebody sooner or later."

"Cara." So polite she was. "I'm not sure how I ended up in this class."

That was a much better answer than trying to explain the complicated mess that was the current political state in D'Hara and the Midlands.

"I'm Andrew Wiggin," Ender introduced himself, "Some people call me Ender. And I'm here to learn about any number of things - none of which have anything to do with me aspiring to a life of crime."

Which told Zayne absolutely nothing, beyond that he didn't have bad intentions. Ender knew how to deal with Jedi by now.

"Hi," Miley said, standing to lean against her desk and offer an awkward little wave. "I'm Miley Stewart. I... totally did not pick this class? But like Annie said, it should still be fun! And educational!"

Was it strange that Ben was a little relieved to see that a Jedi could become something other than a Jedi or a Sith as a career path?

His family wasn't huge into branching out...

"I'm Ben Skywalker," he said, trying not to make too much eye contact with either Ender or Anakin, "and with the...fluid nature of politics in many galaxies, I find it's better to be prepared. One person's fugitive from justice is another person's freedom fighter, you know?"

"I'm Kate. I'm here because the Order I trained with before I came here sounds a lot like yours. They're very... dedicated, to their cause, and in their minds anything goes so long as they're serving it." It would not surprise her at all to end up on the wrong side of them at some point.

"Including killing people before they've done anything wrong, just because they suspect they might." For example being the daughter of a very powerful man, whose previous offspring had a tendency towards violence and crazy.

All true, with a few details omitted.

"My name is Daenerys Targaryen," she said, not bothering with her various titles for the moment. "I was born an outcast princess, and I have grown to be an outcast queen. I'm here to learn what I can so that I might reclaim my rightful throne."

There. That was succinct, without mentioning the coup, or her husband's death. All pluses as far as Dany was concerned.

"Surreal," she said by way of introduction, "-and I'm not here because I'm on the wrong side of the law, but I have the unfortunate circumstance that the people making the laws don't like me much."

See, if you were vague, you didn't need to lie about anything.

"I don't plan anything," and this was actually mostly the truth! "My name is Kenzi, I don't have plans for after graduation, but I don't trust the government--" Also true! "So I figured hey, why not?"

"I'm Rinoa Heartilly, and I'm a senior," Rinoa said, fingering the rings on her necklace as she wondered how forthcoming she should be.

"I'm here because I'm ... a Sorceress, which means I'm feared by a lot of people back home. If something goes wrong, I might be the one who gets the blame for it. At that point, I would have to either ... turn myself in to be sealed, or risk starting another Sorceress War, which would have heavy casualties, so I'd ... I'd rather know how to run."

I meant to mention this yesterday, and utterly Britta'd it, buuuuut Britta's not going to be in class because she was still in New York for it. Wah-waaaaaah. In case you were wondering. I know you were really concerned.
