How were they literally a week out from Christmas? Arden was not prepared. Arden was the opposite of prepared. And Arden wasn't about to get any more prepared during her shift today. Yes, the candles that had shown up today were very pretty and she loved how not flammable they seemed to be, but she didn't love how hard the gremlins were working to test that inflammability.

So yeah, her day was spent running around and keeping gremlins from trying to light the library, the books, the furniture, and themselves on fire.

"None of these things are the lights of Hanukkah, you jerks!" she seethed.

The worst thing about 'beverages from the pipes' day was not, as Arden was learning, the inability to shower before class. It wasn't even keeping your golden retriever brother from trying to drink mocha, despite chocolate being terrible for dogs! (And, you know, coffee was just terrible in general.) It was, apparently, keeping the gremlins from trying to start the sprinkler systems in the library so they could have something to drink.

"This stuff is literally on tap!" Arden protested. "Why are you trying to wreck the library?!?"

Fortunately, Raiden was happy to try to chase the gremlins off (she was pretty sure he thought it was a new and possibly best game), while Gray napped in the blanket sling she rigged up, but anybody looking for peace and quiet should try...pretty much anywhere else.

Arden had meant to be very productive and get everything tidied up and put away before leaving for California after her shift, but then she'd gotten distracted by some guy's weird bricks supposedly "inspired by the blockchain." Or rather, she'd gotten distracted by everyone in the comments covering their eyes and saying, "Oh no" to every new detail that came out about how this guy was building his house.

Did she know anything about engineering, or construction, or building history? Nope! But she was learning!

"Oh look! His Reddit post..."

"I wasn't planning on reading about ghost sharks," Belle said, looking longingly at the book she'd brought with her.

The gremlin holding out a book toward her showed off its teeth and Belle sighed.

"If you insist," she said. "Were you hoping I'd read it to you?"

The gremlin nodded and plopped down at her feet.

"Very well then."

Huh. There were a bunch of music books out around the library. Arden found one for guitars, basses, drums, even keyboards. Books about music, books teaching people how to play the instruments, books about caring and maintaining them. Even books about cutting a demo and sending it around to record labels.

Arden wasn't sure if the gremlins were starting a band, or there was something else in the library that was thinking about it (possibly even the library itself?), but all afternoon she heard strains of music coming from different areas, sometimes just warmup exercises and chords, sometimes whole songs.

Couldn't find the musicians when she went looking for them, of course. But could definitely hear them.

"Hey!" she called at one point. "Seven Nation Army?"

A long moment of silence, and from over near the biographies section, the slow reverberations of a bass guitar. Bum bumbum bum bumbuuuuumbuuummm. Bum bum bumbum bum bumbumbuuummm...

There was a pair of Crocs in the library. No feet. Just Crocs. And those Crocs kept moving. Not while Belle was looking at them, of course, but every time she saw them they were in a new position.

Were the shoes haunted?

Was there a dedicated and sneaky gremlin moving them?

Were the shoes simply alive?

Belle did not know. Belle might never know.

It was two days from Halloween and rather than try to get the gremlins to focus on books and studying, Arden had remembered that the library also rented movies and other media, too!

So she pulled down the big screen, set up the DVD player, and started playing some Halloween movies from last century. The All Hallow's Eve Tree, naturally, and The Least Good Witch, The Bad Dream Before Yule, and Abracadabra to name some of the classics from the olden days. Hopefully the movies would be able to keep them quiet and entertained and not tearing the library apart looking for candy.

The gremlins were crawling around, dressed as dogs today. Normally, this would have Arden guessing that it was some kind of weird Halloween thing, or wondering if there was some kind of uber-gremlin with venom so powerful that it affected other gremlins.

But then they started moving in clear choreography and Arden finally (and regretfully) understood what was happening there. She pulled out her phone and checked a few things and--yup. DOGS had debuted on Broadway on-- October 7th. Today was the 8th. So either they had been celebrating for an entire day or someone had gotten the dates wrong and, either way, Arden wasn't going to point it out. They were being quiet and self-entertaining and, honestly, it could be worse.

They could have been celebrating Moonlight Express and acting like a bunch of trains.

Yeah, Arden had come in and immediately had to break up a fight between gremlins, which was a truly harrowing experience. Aggressive gremlins were bitey gremlins, and Arden was not interested in wandering around thinking she was a Southern belle again. Or whatever weird hallucination her brain and gremlin venom might cook up together.

After a couple of very close calls between her flesh and gremlin teeth, she'd finally discovered the reason behind the fight: they'd been fighting over whose music was going to be played while they were in the library today. Arden was pretty sure the answer was supposed to be be 'nobody's music, it's the LIBRARY' but there was still the fear of biting.

So instead, she'd come up with a different option and that was why the library was hosting its first ever (probably?) Silent Rave. She'd managed to scrounge up enough phones, mp3 players, walkmans, discmans, and even cassette players (okay, people REALLY needed to go through the lost and found more often) and had handed them out to all the assembled gremlins, so everybody could listen to their own music without bothering anybody else.

And hey! She got to listen to music while tidying up the library, so...bonus!

With all of the pictures from yesterday's trip, Arden was spending today going through them, deleting any of the ones that weren't great, finding the ones she liked best, and even doing a bit of color touch-up and editing. It was not easy to do on a tiny phone and she found herself wishing for access to programs that would make it easier.

"Except they're all stupid expensive," she muttered, trying to get rid of a glare. And then she paused, considering. "Huh. Maybe I'll have a whole Christmas list after all."

Something to seriously consider oh, in November, maybe. But that wasn't going to get this set of pictures looking as close to professional as she could possibly get them, so less wishing, more working, Arden!

It was still technically summer, so Arden was really confused by the creepy snow monster that had tried to attack her on the way to school today. She'd been alone, so she'd grabbed as many chords of magic as she could and shoved them at the monster - which had poofed into bitty snowflakes.

Which, in retrospect, might have been overkill. Especially since she was immediately hit by the exhaustion that came from using up most of her energy at once. She managed to drag herself the rest of the way to the library, but now was doing her best not to pass out at the counter.

She also wasn't moving from this chair, because if she did, she was pretty sure she'd end up falling over flat.

Twas the last week of classes and all through the room,
The aide was found cleaning, with dustrag and broom.
The books were all shelved with precision and care;
In wait for the new year which soon would be there.
The surfaces were scrubbed, now all sparkly and bright;
The gremlins in timeout for starting a fight.
Whence from the stacks there arose such a clatter,
The aide jumped three feet, yelling, "Yo, what's the matter?"
Suspicious as always, towards the clamor she crept,
Was it perhaps her big brother, falling down as he slept?
Or maybe a bat gotten lost in the sauce,
Or perhaps 'twas a student, or Belle, or her boss!
More noises came, a thump, a SLAM! and a rattle--
Perhaps were some alots locked in battle?
The aide peeped 'round, and saw at 5 feet at most,
None of those things, but a terrible g-g-g-ghost!
She squeaked out a curse, her eyes open wide,
And flew to her desk, away that spectre who'd died!
She turned and she fled, with the ghost right behind;
"Slow down," it moaned, "I'm paying a fine!"
The aide shook her head, and to a halt she did skid,
And turned and looked closely, "Why--you're just a kid!"
"Yes," it wailed, "and I find I can't rest,
"Not until I've paid off, all ten of my debts.
"I loved to read greatly, any book fell to hand,
"The libraries worked constant, to keep up with demand.
"But returning the books? Oh I was quite bad at that,
"And it turns out that heaven is run by stern bureaucrats.
"Who denied me my entrance till I had mended my way,
"Till all books returned and all debts be repaid."
"Goddess this island," the aide said, hand on her chin,
"Bring me your books and I'll check them all in."
The ghost cheered, "Yippee!" and brought her his books,
And waited with breath baited and upon tenterhooks,
To hear the sum total the amount that he owed,
And was shocked to see all the numbers zeroed.
"Wait," cried he, "You mean I owe not a dime?"
"I can move on--you mean it, it's finally time?"
"Sure is," said the aide, "so go with my blessing,
"Well, once you pick up those those books you were messing."
"Too late!" cried the spirit, "Bye now, I'm gone!
"You're on your own now, good luck, bye, so long!"
And the aide watched the soul vanish in bright light and rhymes,
Shook her head then grumbled, "I hate this island sometimes."

The gremlins were making blackout poetry today.

"You can't write in the books!"

One gremlin held up a book and showed off the DISCARD stamp inside the front cover. They weren't wrecking anything new! At least not at the moment.

"You could make copies of the pages too," Belle suggested. "If you wanted other books to use."

She was going to be keeping a close eye on those gremlins. Very close.

And maybe doing some blackout poetry of her own.

Why did the library smell faintly of peanut butter today? Belle didn't know. Belle wasn't going to spend too much time investigating, either. She did a quick pass through the space looking for any signs of odd gremlin activity or abandoned indoor picnics or any other obvious reason why the smell of peanut butter lingered in the air.

There was no clear cause. That had Belle feeling a bit concerned but not overly so. A smell of peanut butter was a pleasant one at least and there was a package of peanut butter cups waiting for her on the desk. It was well sealed so not the source of the mysterious scent but it was certainly appreciated.

The library was not a mess this week, there were no stray feathers, and even the gremlins seemed calm.

Actually, the gremlins were just asleep as Belle discovered when she did a walkthrough of the stacks. Some had borrowed the blankets that were theoretically for Gray.

Today would be a quiet day, she decided. Shelving could wait. She would just sit and read and hope no gremlins were disturbed by anyone else.

The last thing Arden remembered before her sudden finching was the library being a complete wreck, so she was very grateful to discover that, at some point in the intervening two weeks, someone or something had cleaned it all up. She couldn't swear that the mess had been the reason for her transformation, but she couldn't completely disregard the possibility, either. Today, however, that seemed unlikely to be a concern either way; the library was spotless. In fact, the circulation desk was practically gleaming in the light.

Hey, wait a minute--

Arden marched over to the desk and examined it closely. Yep, someone had smeared Vaseline on the surface of it. And there were thumbtacks on the chair she normally sat in. And a bucket was perched precariously over the door to Mr. Constantine's office.

Someone had been in the mood for pranks, it appeared.

Arden got into the library and discovered that it was absolutely trashed. Gremlins were running rampant, Bookapalooza had apparently happened overnight with a ton of books laying around with a pile of musician autobiographies in piles on the table, and the bats were back and divebombing anything that moved.

"Oh, definitely not," Arden said, shaking her head. "I am not dealing with this. I'd rather go to Shenanigans than this. I'm not your mom, I'm so not picking up after you."

And as if the island had heard this and decided to help, where there was once an Arden standing there, arms folded, glaring at the mess, there was suddenly a brightly-colored finch perched on the circulation desk and preening her feathers.

Maybe slightly overkill, but Arden appreciated the backup. Or something.

Belle had treated herself to a milkshake before walking in to her shift. The milkshake had treated itself to her outfit and she'd had to run back and change into something else.

Was she wearing a fancy dress right now? Yes.

Was she glaring at the gremlins who were pointing at her and giggling? Yes.

Was the library just waiting to do something messy and terrible to her and anyone who might come in? Almost certainly.

There was a weird beach tableau happening in the library today. Books - beach reads, obviously - were lounging around, while Beach Boys played from some portable speakers. Some books rested on towels, some wear floaties around their covers, a few are clustered around a couple of different coolers. Arden had no idea of what could even be in those coolers. What snacks and beverages would books even bring to the beach?

Not curious enough to actually tread into their space, mind.

At least not until she saw a pair of books with a bottle of suntan lotion between them, the paper cover pulled slightly askew. "Okay, absolutely not!" she called. "We do not put lotion onto the books!"

There was a small, personalized rainstorm over Arden's head. It had appeared the minute she'd stepped into the library and she'd be freaking out about her powers if several of the gremlins hadn't also had miniature weather patterns over their heads. One, who was grinning, seemed to be in a perpetual sunbeam. Another two had rain like she did. A fourth was glaring and dark clouds roiled ominously above its head, with occasional flashes of heat lightning.

She was just going to sit here and pretend like she had no idea what weather went with what moods, and definitely like she didn't notice that it rained harder whenever she thought of her depressing showing in class yesterday.

At least the rain disappeared before it hit anything that wasn't her. Like the books.

The library was decorated for Halloween. Why? Arden had absolutely no idea. She'd just walked in and there had been jack o'lanterns, crepe paper bats, and cotton batting webs everywhere. Two twelve foot high skeletons were dressed up (one was a wizard in a blue robe and hat spangled with stars, and the other was a pirate) and standing behind the circulation desk.

You know. Where she was supposed to be.

"I'm so not asking," Arden said, with a shake of her head as she sat at one of the tables nearby. "I'm just going to be over here."

Belle just hoped they weren't using any papers they shouldn't be. Surely all of those magazines hadn't come from the shelves? And the books they were using seemed to have been discarded. Another library shift, another afternoon of research. This time, however, she was researching restaurants. Two weeks in a row at number one was pretty awesome, and Cal really did deserve to go somewhere nice. Arden was still uneasy about going into Baltimore, considering that was how Callista had found her, but there were other cities full of restaurants. New Orleans. Louisville. Atlanta. DC. New York. And that was just the East Coast. Any of those cities would have amazing restaurants, it was just a matter of finding which one had the best meals that matched up with her budget. It was break week, which meant Arden was going through their collections, checking over books for damage and wear and tear, and setting aside the ones that looked like they maybe weren't up for another year of use. Considering some of these books had never been published (or even written) here, Arden wasn't sure how they were going to replace any of them, but that sounded like a librarian problem. Maybe Constantine was gonna magic them back into pristine condition?

Again, librarian problem.

While most of Youtube was a horrible cesspit (much like the rest of the internet, really), there were still some wholesome and pure sections that one could visit to relax a bit. Carpet cleaning videos, for one. Powerwashing videos. Item restoration videos were also pretty great for that, and videos showing how.

Today, however, Arden was watching some guy dig out amazing open air buildings in the ground, by hand. She wasn't a hundred percent sure there wasn't some kind of trick at play here, but she also didn't care. Either way, it was a really compelling watch.

The herpetology books were going wild today. They were everywhere, except where they were supposed to be. You know, properly shelved in their respective locations. It was story time in the library today. Not Arden, no, but the Irish mythology section had gotten together to act out the gripping saga of the Táin Bó Cúailnge. It was silent, the whole story being told via relevant cover art, titles, and very dramatic acting. Which, you know, considering they were books, was an impressive feat all by itself.

The bats didn't care. And honestly, Belle, you'd think after all these years at this school you'd be used to wildlife behaving oddly. One of them sparkled! Flying around a library during the day was hardly even worth commenting on.

The gremlins wrestling in a corner were also nothing unusual. Nor was the yelling. Or the mysterious wet spot on the ceiling.

It was just a rather typical day in the library and Belle was tired.

Arden had a serious case of the dun-wannas. She blamed leaving vacationing in Barbados for a wonderful week. So instead of doing anything productive, like keeping an eye on the gremlins, glaring down the bats who flew low enough to graze her hair, or interrogating the books on how they'd ended up with beads, Arden was sitting behind the desk, doing sudoku.

Possibly sulking, just a little.

The bats were still in the library. The bats were still much better behaved than the books had been last week but that was a very low bar to clear.

"Did the gremlins get to you when they were doing arts and crafts?" Belle asked. "Do you need to visit the veterinarian or will you be all right?"

The bat just looked at her, its expression inexplicably broody on its tiny fuzzy face. "Well, I'm happy to assist should you need something. Until then, you can hang out right there. Keep me company."

A few other bats came over the desk eventually and looked at her expectantly. So what was Belle to do? Read them a story, of course. Or several stories.

Arden came into the library slowly, yardstick in hand just in case the library books hadn't gotten the message that the pollen was over and they needed to behave themselves again. "Hello?" she called. "Y'all good?"

Coming further inside proved not only were the books back to behaving normally, the area had even been cleaned up, leaving it good as new. She held onto her suspicion for the first half hour of her shift, just waiting for whatever fresh madness was going to start just when she let down her guard.

It wasn't until she looked up and spotted a small, dark, winged shape fluttering through the air that she let herself relax. Bats? Sure. Bats were fine. She didn't know how they'd gotten into the library or when or how many, but now there were bats here and she was just gonna roll with it.

Belle had listened to radio and was forewarned about possibly book misbehaviors. Somehow she was still not prepared for what she encountered. But then, who was ever really prepared for amorous books cavorting in indecent ways in full view?

The book on pineapples that was flitting from group to group had her confused but not confused enough to research it.

The tiny RIP sign next to a single flower and a squirrel-sized hat was also not going to be further explored.

Instead, Belle was going to try and keep the romances and the erotica and the romantasy from doing anything they might regret by next week. Did books have regrets? Did gremlins? Belle was certainly glad she wasn't seeing any gremlins at this time. That might be too much. The books were bad enough!

At least they provided a bit of distraction which Belle was sorely in need of by this point in the week. She would circulate amongst the stacks, trying to maintain some semblance of order and when she wasn't doing that she was going to read the spiciest romances she could find about knights and damsels. Or maybe there would be a good one about a mysterious older man in a castle (or a bookshop, or anything else that might be mysterious in and of itself).

Arden had been dreading heading into the library today, unsure what she was in for. Would the gremlins be having a speeddating event like 3MD? Would there be safer sex displays holding lectures? Would the safer sex book displays be lecturing speeddating gremlins? She didn't know. All she knew was that the library would absolutely, positively refuse to be normal about this week.

And she was right.

Not about the book displays or the speeddating gremlins. Instead, there were just a thousand different romance genres everywhere. Shifter romances were flirting with erotic myth retellings. Historical romances were fluttering their pages invitingly at post-apocalyptic ones. Romantacies were insisting to their friends that they could 'fix' graphic celebrity tell-alls. Glossy art books featuring nudes canoodling with cheaply-printed translations of BL light novels. Everywhere she looked, there were piles of books an the susurration of paper brushing against paper, the scent of ink heavy in the air. Worse was when she'd accidentally glance somewhere and catch the books delicately sliding their pages together in an intimate--

"N-no thank you! Absolutely not!" she snapped, knocking two books (an overly-sexualized murder mystery and a copy of Lady Chatterly's Lover) apart with a yardstick she was keeping handy for just this purpose. "If you wanna do any of that, there are any number of private bookshelves available. Go on now, shoo."

The library gremlins were huddled together this morning. Belle knew they were plotting something. Belle did not want to know what, not really.

She was going to keep her distance when she could and read about...ice storms, apparently. That was the newest display theme that had appeared since her last library shift.

Well, she was cozy enough in the library in an oversized sweater reading a mystery set in a hotel where the guests had all been iced in over a weekend by a sudden storm. She suspected the hotel was haunted though she wasn't sure yet.

The library was a perfectly reasonable temperature today. Belle was thrilled about this. No need for several layers and there were no tiny swimming pools in sight.

If it was casino night (during the day) nobody had bothered to inform Belle!

She turned down an offer to join a game of blackjack and settled in at the desk to keep an eye on the proceedings.

The library was still warm. Hot, even.

Belle was in a summery dress.

The gremlins were in swimwear. And they'd brought in an inflatable pool.

"Oh dear," she whispered to herself.

The water seemed to be staying far away from the books, for now, so she'd be at the desk with an iced tea today and perusing a selection of beach reads.

Well, the heat had been fixed. Sort of.

The good news: the library was no longer a frigid wasteland. The bad news: it was now a sweltering mess instead. It seemed like the heat had been turned all the way up and then broken off. Even having the windows open wasn't doing a damn thing to cool the library off.

Of course, Arden had dressed preparing for another week in Antarctica, not a sauna, so she'd come in wearing a thermal shirt, a sweater, a fleece, and a thick winter jacket. Which was why she she could be found in just her bra and her jeans behind the desk today. Because she wasn't going to get heat stroke just so nobody would get the vapors with her wearing something that covered more than her usual bikini top.

Thank the goddess she was wearing a cute bra today. It was the little things, okay?

The temperature was cold enough that even Arden's ability to regulate the temperature of the air around her wasn't up to the task. What was worse? Something (Arden was betting gremlins) had broken (or sabotaged) the library's heat. As in, there wasn't any.

She'd put in an emergency work request for Fosse, but until then, your friendly neighborhood aide would be huddled behind the circulation desk, wrapped in the blanket she kept handy for Gray's Sloth attacks, and looking very miserable about the whole thing.

The regular library gremlins were involved in an apparently thrilling dreidel tournament when Belle arrived.

One helpfully provided her with a book that explained the history and rules of the game but shushed her when she tried to ask a question.

The nerve! Shushing a library employee in her own library!

So she sat and watched and read for a while before making up her mind on whether or not she wanted to join in.

Hopefully none of the gremlins would be trying to offer up library books as tokens.

Today was a little rowdier in the library than Arden really would have liked, but while sentient balls of sugar were cute, they were not good for library books. So she was spending her shift chasing the sugar balls - who seemed to assume this was some kind of fun game - with a dustpan and broom to try to gently herd them into the dustpan where she could then dispose of them in the hallway.

Which, okay yes, she could see how they might consider that a fun game, rolling back inside any time the library doors were opened so they could play again.

At least she never lacked for cardio around here.

It was December now, which meant time for Arden to start making a holiday gift list and checking it twice. She had a lot more people to buy for this year than she had last and that thought made her almost glow slightly with happiness. Not literally though. She'd checked.

Still it was amazing how much could change in just a matter of a few months. Hells, she'd only run away from Callista's house not even a full year and a half ago? And now she had friends, a boyfriend, a best friend, mentors...

Families.

It was practically dizzying.

...And so was the number of people now that she had to buy gifts for, but still. What a problem to have, right? Much better than the alternative.

The real question though - did she have enough creativity for shopping for all these folks?

Ooof.

There were turkeys in the Library today. Multiple turkeys. Singing turkeys. Singing turkeys with choreography.

Arden watched the madness in front of her with something akin to horrified fascination. She wasn't even nauseated by the mention of eating turkeys the way she'd normally be - too busy trying to figure out if she was having some kind of episode.

"Eat me!" a turkey warbled at her.

"...You know, I almost wish the gremlins were here instead," she muttered, putting a book in front of her face and trying not to look up again.

Except, sadly for Arden, this wasn't a performance. No, that was for tomorrow. This was their rehearsal.

Before the afternoon was over, she would come to dread the words, 'Let's take it from the top!'
