The herpetology books were going wild today. They were everywhere, except where they were supposed to be. You know, properly shelved in their respective locations. Arden could kind of get where the snake books were coming from, this was clearly some kind of St. Patrick's protest or something, but she was definitely side-eying the other reptile and amphibian books participating in this, too

"This is starting to feel more like a reenactment of the Plagues than anything else," she informed the five books about frogs that she swept up and moved from her seat behind the circulation desk. I think message is getting lost."

She lifted her head to look up at Arden with a hopeful expression. "I know this is Haram but I want bacon. Crispy forbidden bacon."

Arden grimaced slightly before offering, "How about turkey bacon? A turkey bacon cheeseburger with fries?"

She could probably convince Cal to cook the bacon if she said he could eat the rest of it.

Kamala gave her a knowing look. "A plain cheeseburger is fine. No reason to get birds involved," she replied. "Or tofu bacon which really shouldn't exist."

"Counterpoint: It would make Cal so happy to cook bacon that he can eat most of. And also, you know, pair it with being a good friend."

"Cal can have bacon time on his own. I'd rather you didn't have to leave the kitchen because of my need for something crunchy and salty," Kamala said pulling herself up so her chin was leaning on her hand. "Plus I probably should, you know, follow the tenets of my religion and not get a call from Ammi because Aunty Ruby found out about my transgression."

"I mean, turkey bacon is halal, isn't it?" Arden asked. "Or rather, it's not inherently haram, right? So long as you're eating turkey bacon, Aunt Ruby and her weird psychic mutant power can't complain."

Gray paused inside the doorway and eyed the books suspiciously. "Do I wanna know?"

"The snake books are protesting St. Patrick's Day, and the rest of the herpetology section are taking advantage of it, is the best I can figure out," Arden said with a long-suffering sigh.

"Why are they protesting St. Patrick's Day?" Gray, who for a Nephilim and a deadly sin knew very little about the whole Christian theology thing, asked, confused. "Do snakes hate Ireland?" Were they English snakes?

"Saint Patrick chased all the snakes out of Ireland," Arden said. "And the snake books think this is, like, glorifying snake prejudices. I think."

The glare Arden leveled at Grey suggested she agreed with the narrative. "You gonna help pick them all up and shelve them properly when they're done?"

Arden just nodded. Knowingly. "We're not vocally supporting the books' right to protest unless we're materially supporting the library aide."

"I can...materially support the library aide with waffles?" Gray tried, hoping she would say yes so he would have an excuse to make Raiden make waffles, as opposed to having to try to remember how the Dewey decimal system worked. (Did they even use that any more...?)

"...The library aide can be materially supported by waffles," Arden decided. Because she knew that they would be Raiden's waffles and those were, almost definitionally, delicious.
