Fandom Library, Wednesday, July 16th

Arden got into the library and discovered that it was absolutely trashed. Gremlins were running rampant, Bookapalooza had apparently happened overnight with a ton of books laying around with a pile of musician autobiographies in piles on the table, and the bats were back and divebombing anything that moved.

"Oh, definitely not," Arden said, shaking her head. "I am not dealing with this. I'd rather go to Shenanigans than this. I'm not your mom, I'm so not picking up after you."

And as if the island had heard this and decided to help, where there was once an Arden standing there, arms folded, glaring at the mess, there was suddenly a brightly-colored finch perched on the circulation desk and preening her feathers.

Maybe slightly overkill, but Arden appreciated the backup. Or something.

Probably for the best. The bird doesn't seem to understand the Dewey Decimal System.

It will be a pretty one-sided conversation. Maybe she'll chirp at you?

One of the best parts about winning Paintball was getting to tease Arden the next day, so Cal was in a pretty good mood as he headed into the library, at least until he saw the mess.

"Oh man, this place is a disaster. You're not going to have to clean this, are you?" he said, trailing off as he realized he wasn't talking to anyone but a bird. "Oh no."

Bird!Arden whistled cheerfully at him. Maybe she was also happy to get out of cleaning? Or maybe she was just a bird and birds sang. Who could say?

Cal sighed softly as he ran his fingers over her feathers. It was nice to know people's signature in the Force didn't totally disappear when they turned into animals, but he still felt kind of bad for Arden. "Did you touch something bad?"

BD-1 hopped down onto the counter and beeped at her while checking her out. "She's kind of my size now, I like it!"

Arden nuzzled Cal's fingers, and then chirped back at BD-1, her whistles and trills mimicking his binary beeps perfectly.

Honestly, she was better at that now than she was as a human. A little sad.

BD-1 bounced happily. "I'm a pretty bird," he beeped at her.

Cal sighed as he took a view of his life for the next... however long this lasted. "I guess it's a good thing I have two shoulders, huh?"

I'm a pretty bird, Bird!Arden chirped back. Sure, it was probably more mimicry than anything else, but hey! Still kinda adorable, right?

Cal, you did not seem to be appreciating the adorable happening here. This would kill on TikTok, just ask Lydia!

(Please ask Lydia, that would be hilarious.)

It was very adorable, and Cal could practically see the gears turning in BD's head at all the things he could get her to say. "That's going to do very well on the radio," he said, because that was his kind of tech.

BD was plotting videos, don't worry.

"Do you feel okay? I wish I actually spoke bird so I could check on you." She was just going to have to settle for petting, oh well.

She nuzzled his fingers more. Thank you for the petting? Reassurance? Encouraging him to pet her more? All of the above?

And yes! BD-1 should definitely do that. They could add to the Fandom animal TikTok content. Maybe see if Boston would be down for a collaboration.

Well, then she'd get more petting as he put her on his shoulder - the one BD didn't usually hang out on. "Would you like to get out in the sun? Maybe fly around some?" he asked. She was still herself in there, sort of, maybe?

She whistled excitedly. Fly? Fly? Yes, she would love to fly! When did they get to go flying? Now? How about now? Okay, now...?

It was going to be a very long two weeks.

Gray had swung by to make sure Arden had gotten the pictures of Raiden in the watermelon king costume from Shenanigans...but once he got an eyeful of the state of the library, not to mention a bird on the desk, he wondered if maybe he should turn around and leave before Arden came back.

Bird!Arden trilled at him. Look, Gray, she had wings now, too! Twinsies!!!

Aw, they could go flying together! If Gray ever figured out the bird was Arden. "I don't think you're supposed to be in here," he told bird!Arden, and then mused to the room at large, "Maybe I should just text her."

But...but...Gray! It was her! She was literally a finch! How much more obvious could it be???

Because, y'know, Gray gave off such ornithologist vibes.

It was your rotten luck to get a Nephilim bro who hadn't gone through a birding phase, Arden. If Galen had been here he could have told Gray what kind of finch that was on the desk and where it was native to. Not that Galen would unprompted, but, y'know, if Gray's puppy dog eyes were effective enough.

"I'm gonna text her," Gray muttered, and sent off a, Did you get the pics? text to Arden's phone, followed quickly by, Also I'm not responsible for the state of the library fyi

The next question was whether Arden's phone had survived her transformation, or if it was currently somewhere in the mysterious ether or what have you along with most of her mass.

With Fandom's whims at play here, who could really answer that question? It was possible that it had been in the ether, but the mysterious forces that controlled things like animal transformations had decided this was too good and had manifested it back. Who could say?

Which was a lot to say that Gray definitely heard the chime of Arden's phone receiving texts immediately after sending them. Apparently, Arden was a monster that kept sounds on. Tch.

Wait. That was over by...

Arden wouldn't have left her phone just lying around, which meant...

"Arden?" Gray asked the bird.

Arden whistled. How did it sound sarcastic? The world may never know.

"Arden?!"

It was a good thing Gray already had his phone out, because he was now snapping a photo of the Arden bird and sending it to Galen with, What kind of bird is this? followed by More important, what does it eat?

"...okay the typing dots keep appearing and disappearing so we might be waiting a while on Galen," he said, like Arden would know why he'd contacted Galen even if she'd been human. He was going to have to initiate her into the deeper mysteries when she had thumbs again.

This next two chirps sounded pleased and curious respectively. She fluttered her wings and angled her head a bit and fluffed her feathers. You got her from her good side, Gray? This was important.

Oh, yeah, Gray was taking a bunch of pictures. In case Galen needed them to help with bird identification, obviously.

Totally.

"You're a very cool-looking bird!" he told Arden.

She bobbed her head. She was very glad to be a colorful finch and not something boring and drab like a sparrow or whatever.

And she fluttered up to perch on his hand and sing at him.

"Wait, wait," Gray said, trying to get her in frame with his phone in his other hand. "Let me record this. Uh, in case it helps Galen identify you." Yeah, that was totally why.

Totally. Bird!Arden did give him a look like even her bird-sized brain could figure out that it was bullshit, but absolutely did scooch a little closer to him, trilling a little song.

He probably has better ways to convince the library to behave and clean itself up, at least?
