Juli did not particularly approve of having food in class, but nonetheless, today there were various moddable snacks of varying degrees of healthiness and she, herself, was nibbling on a carrot stick. And drinking her coffee, of course.

Always with the coffee these days.

“Welcome to your class with me for this term,” she said, once everyone had gathered, “please, help yourself to the food, sit back, and each of you tell me one thing that you’ve learned this term--whether in my classroom or not—that had it’s origins in another world.”

She gestured to a student at random. “Begin.”

Juli had a bit of a headache today, so she kept her lecture short and sweet.

Well. For Juli.

“Holidays,” she noted, “are something that nearly every culture celebrates in someway, shape, or form. Your holidays might not be much like those of the person sitting next to you, but every culture, every country, every people, have their own days to celebrate.”

“What holidays do each of you have?” she asked. “What do you do to prepare for them, what do they signify to you, or to your country? This is your topic for today,” if they hadn’t figured that out already, “discuss the differences amongst yourselves and the similarities as well.”

Today’s topic was rather inspired by the shopping trip that was looming rather, well, ominously in her very near future. Her tomorrowish future even. What had she been thinking? Juli considered the fact that it would, at least, be nice to go out with Charlotte but at the same time her fingers itched to make a list of what to buy.

She suspected that Charlotte would take the list from her, fold it up, and refuse to let her see it. The whole… impulse-shopping wasn’t something Juli thought she’d be good at.

Ah, well. It would be an… experience. She’d give it a try.

“We’ll be talking about clothing today,” she said quietly. “On this planet there are many different cultures and with those cultures come different styles of dress. This idea is only furthered when you add alternate universes and worlds into the equation. These differences in apparel can be subtle, or incredibly overt.”

“What I’m wearing, for instance, is considered to be high-end professional in my universe,” Juli continued. “Here, it can garner a few glances, but otherwise manages to pass mostly uncommented upon. This isn’t the same for everyone,” she said, thinking of Temari’s fishnet… issue, and Giselle’s dresses.

“From your world to this, what are the main differences in style do you think? Do you prefer your own world’s way of doing things, or do you rather this one? For those of you from this world, or one so like it that there’s not an appreciable difference in what is worn, what clothing do you prefer? Why? Is it for what it looks like, how practical it is, the way it feels?”

She folded her hands neatly over her stomach. “You may begin.”

Juli looked tired today, and there was a faint frown creasing her forehead.

“We’ll be talking about the ethics of punishment today,” she said, leaning back in her chair and sipping her coffee. Sweet, sweet caffeine. “Both the similarities and the differences. For the sake of simplicity I’m giving you a scenario from my world, one that actually happened, and I’d like to hear what your opinion on it is—and then tell me what your world would do in the same scenario. And why. Feel free to discuss your answers with your classmates.”

Her eyes darkened slightly. “As I’ve told past classes: there are no right or wrong answers.”

“Your scenario is this: A man, specifically created to be a soldier, finds himself at a loss after a war is over. Not having any purpose in life he goes insane and turns to killing people.” Another sip of coffee. “We caught him. And we modified his memory until he was no longer the same person that he started as in punishment, then released him back into humanity. What is your opinion on that? And then, what would your world have done to the man that went insane and went about killing people?”

"Begin."

“Let’s talk about climates today,” Juli said, leaning back in her chair. “The weather, if any of you don’t know what I’m talking about.” She was simplifying, yes. Not that she had a low opinion of some of her students’ intelligence or anything. But after last week, Juli wasn’t inclined to think highly of half her class.

“I’m used to, frankly--the climate I’m the most used to is one that’s entirely regulated and controlled--always the perfect temperature, never any need to complain about the heat or tug on an extra thick sweater. Of course, I’m well aware that most of you probably aren’t from the same situation. Can you see where this is going?”

She smiled slightly. “What are you used to then? What aren’t you used to? What do you like? What don’t you like? Discuss this at your will, and compare differences. What’s the most common climate between you all? The least common?”

Juli tapped her fingers thoughtfully. “You may all begin. Mr. Murdock, Miss Emmagan, and Mr. Next, I’d like to speak to you after the discussion about your absences last week.” Her voice had cooled slightly with the last sentence.

Juli had, quite frankly, laughed herself nearly sick over the news of the weekend--news that she’d been glad enough not to be a part of--and it was with a quiet amusement that she came to teach today. “I trust you all had good weekends?” she commented mildly, and then let it go.

“We’ll start off with something easy enough,” she smiled slightly, “after all, where would be the fun in starting with the harder topics, before you’re all quite comfortable with each other?” Of course she, Juli, would’ve found it fun, but she was trying to be slightly more circumspect in her lines of questioning. Slightly. “Today’s topic is: Food. Any and all discussion relating to this topic is encouraged, but if you need a few questions to start you off with then, perhaps, consider these: What do you like the most? What don’t you like the most? What’s traditional in your area, and how does that differ from here? Do you cook? Do you like to cook? What’s the worse thing you’ve tried? The best?”

“Those are just a few of the questions you’re free to discuss, use them as starting points.” Juli took a deep breath, “and I will, of course, answer any of these questions myself should you wish it of me.” Fair was fair, and this was a rather basic thing. She didn’t mind answering these sorts of questions.

She gestured to a random student. “Now, start.”

"Good morning," she said mildly, as she waited for her class to settle, "I am Dr. Juli Mizrahi and welcome to ‘Inside Out’. While in class I expect to be addressed as either Dr. Mizrahi, or Professor Mizrahi." A pause. "Though I will reconsider my stance on that, if you have an alternative but equally respectful way of addressing me."

"I’m sure by now that many of you have noticed that, in Fandom, there’s much that’s difference from your homes.” Hopefully, at least. Juli would have to wonder at the kind of world where everything was always like Fandom. It didn’t fully bear thinking about. “The purpose of this class is to discuss some of the ways that we’re all different--in our background, our outlooks, and our methods of accomplishing things."

"Today’s is merely an introductory class. I’d like you all to answer the following questions: What is your name? Age? What year of schooling are you in? What is the biggest difference you’ve noticed so far between Fandom and your home? And what is your favourite time of the day?" Juli smiled faintly, "Once you’ve answered that, each of you may ask me one question--within reason--and I shall answer honestly."
