Silent Bob looked sad. His very first attempt at teaching, and it was over now. He hoped he had done well. He hoped no parents were going to sue for sexual harassment. Although Jay had done admirably well around the girls. When he wasn’t bored out of his skull or playing with exposed wires, that was.

But he cheered up as soon as the girls arrived. No whiteboard today, just computers and editing and playing with the projection system to get it to work the way he wanted it to while he helped them out. And, about halfway through the class.

"Hey! I brought popcorn and chips and shits!" Jay entered the scene, laden with bags and waving a videotape. "I also found some funny shit we can watch if your documentaries suck!"

Silent Bob sighed, rolling his eyes. He affected a stern look, holding out a hand for the tape. Knowing Jay, it was 'Playboy's Best Bukkake' or something like that. Jay grinned, holding it over his head. "Nah, lunchbox, you ain't gettin' this from me. Man, your momma really loved you or somethin', 'cause there's tons of footage of Little Tons o' Fun on here!"

Bob pounced for Jay and the tape, his eyes wide. Junk food went flying as Jay fled, Bob on his tail. A short, nasty, vicious chase and fight ensued, resulting in Jay dancing his 'come, son of Jor-El!' victory dance and Bob folding his arms and scowling.

Then? It was showtime.

Jay was absolutely nowhere to be found. Moping about the lack of a certain pink-clad blonde? Possibly. Silent Bob didn’t look too concerned about it, so the situation was under control.

Today’s lesson was brought to the girls by the words “scripts” and “storyboards”. At least, that’s what Silent Bob had written on the board when they arrived. With a grin and a flourish, he revealed the sample storyboard he had made, entitled ‘Skater Dude’s Adventure’. Stick figures enacted the adventures of a dude on a skateboard – clearly cribbed from the footage that had made Sakurazaki blush last week – interspersed with notes on where to put an interview, where to put in shots to set a scene or mood, where to add a title slide or a bit of information. He added to it as he went, showing the girls how to build one of their own.

Next up was the example bit. It was ‘Supersize Me’ and ‘Bowling for Columbine’ that Silent Bob used to show how to use the different elements to make a point more effectively. The transition between the McDonald’s “fun facts” to footage of the documentary filmmaker to interviews to stock or historical footage, for example.

Hoping that the girls got it by now, he handed them some storyboard templates and broke the silence of the lesson. “So, uh, the last workshop is in two weeks so you can show off. Next week is the last chance you’ll get to edit and finish up your documentary, but I’ll hang around a bit early that last day if you need to make final touches.” He reconsidered. “Actually, no. We’ll make the expo the last half of the workshop just in case.” He pointed to the storyboards. “So you need to finish up your storyboards and scripts by next week so you know what you’re doing.”

Surprised at the length of that speech, he fell silent again and offered them both a thumbs-up and a proud smile. They were doing great and he was starting to really like this teaching thing.

[[I am a dip and thought I had one less week than I really did. So today’s lesson should have been last week’s . . . oi. He was high, alright? There’s your explanation. No OCD today. Go forth and frolic!]]

"Alright, bi - girls, so Lunchbox says you should have some footage already," Jay said when their two remaining students arrived in the A/V lab. "'Cause fatass is gonna teach you guys how to edit it or some shit like that."

Silent Bob just rolled his eyes and gestured the girls over to one of the computers in the lab, showing them how to log in and download their footage from the cameras. His practice reel was of life outside the Kwik Stop, meaning lots of Jay being loud and offensive, some dancing, a random shot of a stray cat, and a few people going by. Jude skated through the shot, then skated by, saluting with one of the two large slurpees in his hand. Bob had turned the camera to follow his progress down the street.

Once that was done, and once again conducting the entire lesson without saying a word, Silent Bob took them through the various editing features and special effects, from titles to overlays to editing to adding music to playing with colours. He replayed the Jude segment at an excelerated speed, making his movements jerky and comical, with an overlay of the Benny Hill theme. Then again in slow motion, with a dramatic, sweeping orchestral theme that made it suitably dramatic.

When he had gone through all the features he stepped back, encouraging the girls to experiment and have fun with their own clips.

Back in the A/V room for today, Jay was once being vaguely obscene in the back of the room with some spools of wire. Silent Bob was loftily ignoring him. He had his whiteboard back, but before going on with the teaching he held up a calendar. And because it was Jay and Silent Bob, it was the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition calendar, which Bob hurriedly realised and flipped the picture down. He pointed at today's date, then counted down the remaining weeks to July 11, which was circled in bright red. He then wrote on the board,

SHOWCASE!
Invite your friends. We'll bring popcorn.

Calendar set to the side - and then hurriedly snatched up by Jay, who was rapidly getting bored of this whole teaching thing - Silent Bob got down to business. The topic of the day was,

Interviews )

A note on the door of the A/V room directed students to the library. And despite being in the library - a place which terrified Jay, meaning he was sitting very still at a safe distance from anything resembling a book - Silent Bob had scrounged up a flipchart. Today the word of the day appeared to be 'SOURCES'.

He waited until the class arrived before writing anything else, smiling and nodding at each girl in turn. Seeing cameras in hand, he pointed with a quizzical expression on his face, wondering if everything was going alright outside of the workshop. Mini-update received, he turned back to his board, pointing at the word 'SOURCES' again before writing underneath it in a branching web,

- historical footage
- interviews
- statistics
- research

He drew some emphatic lines away from each of these before turning back to the girls with an expectant look on his face. Their turn to do some of the thinking.

Finally, he set them free in the library to do their research, with one slightly frantic gesture in the general direction of Special Collections.

EDIT: But before letting them go, he wrote up on the board, 'Mock interviews next workshop - prepare at least five questions to ask us'.

[[*facepalm* This is what I get for posting before I wake up. Yes, totally have homework. That was there the whole time.]]

Silent Bob is doing something complicated-looking with wires and a sautering iron while Jay stays a very safe distance away. He puts this all away when people arrive, beaming around at everyone with his usual good cheer.

Jay looks disgusted. And a little sullen as he lurks at the back of the classroom with his arms folded and not even trying to see down shirts or up skirts.

Purpose )

Topic Selection )

He turned back to the class and held up a topic sign-up sheet before putting it on the table and making the internationally recognised sign for 'Talk amongst yourselves'.

[[Please to be waiting for OCD. OCD away! I'll be gone most of the day, but I'll pick up pings when I can.]]

Jay and Silent Bob don't look slightly nervous at being in the school without having broken in, or without a giant ball or Mountie on their tail. Nope. Not at all.

Which is why Jay isn't pacing the classroom, fidgeting like mad. Then again, that might also be because he had a coffee date set for after the workshop. The fidgeting halted when he realised that the entirety of their 'class' was cute little girls. That was when the leer started in, focused on the one he didn't know.

"Yo, tubby, get yourself out here," he called, and Silent Bob popped up from behind a sound board, a bunch of wires in his hand. He popped back down, possibly to rewire things, before emerging, brushing off his hands.

And on we go . . . )

[[OOC: Jay's trying to cut back on the language, but it's still going to be around. I'll keep it out of the main comms, but the comments might get a little raunchy. If you're really offended by this, ping me and we'll talk. Thanks.]]
