Honestly, Shunsui almost wondered if sending out this message to his students was even necessary, considering everything still obnoxiously insisting on going on around the island this week, but, just to be on the safe side and he figured a little bit of effort on his part wouldn't hurt, his students would, indeed, be receiving a cancellation notice.

I'm sure this comes as no surprise to you, ducklings, but our final class for the Art of Ma will be canceled
due to this island's complete and utter lack of ability to appreciate negative space for itself
and cluttering itself with far too many annoying and dangerous holiday themes.
Please use this as an excellent example to reflect on the importance of this semester's topic in every day life.

And now that it appeared that just leaving seemed significantly more complicated now, Shunsui wondered if he'd just be better off slipping into jinzen until this all blew over, because if he was going to suffer an assault of verbal abuse regardless, he'd rather it be from his beautiful zanpakutō than from a plant...

Shunsui had arranged a portal for the class period that day, and so when everyone was ready, he ushered them through one that would lead them to a pavillion with wide open walls, nestled in the snowy valley of a mountain beside a lake. Snow itself was drifting down slowly in large, light flakes, and a fire crackled in several braziers set around the pavillion to keep them warm, and Shunsui took a moment to appreciate the idyllic wintry scene with a contented sigh before turning to the students.

"Today, ducklings," he explained, "we are having a traditional snow viewing party, very popular with the aristocricy where I am from, which has its roots in the ideaology of the Art of Ma as we are coming to understand it in this class ♥. Of course, it has always been an easy excuse to gather together to socialize and drink," sorry, though, kids, you'll just be having tea and cocoa at your disposal that morning!, "but it was also a way to appreciate the stark beauty of a snow-filled landscape in the company of like-minded individuals, to inspire introspectives and poetry and a great deal of art. Naturally, the snow is a great blanket of a void to cover the earth and create a unique emptiness of space, the starkness of nature in its quietest time, where there is still beauty even as it slumbers and rests ♥.

"So that will be our class today ♥, to enjoy ourselves in a traditional snow viewing party, and reflect upon the nature's own mastery of the art of Ma. You may sit here and enjoy some warm beverages and each other's company while enjoying the view; there are gardens you may explore and appreciate; there are even a few skilled boatmen down by the lake who will be willing to take you out into the water for an additionally unique perspective. A venture out into the lake during a snow like this is a commmon highlight of all the best snow viewing parties, after all ♥. And, if you're feeling a bit playful, might I suggest taking a moment to create a few yukiusagi, or snow hares, which is a simple egg shape with nandina leaves for ears and red nandina berries for eyes. Often, a playful snowball fight is likely to break out during many snow viewing parties as well, but, for the sake of the exploration of ma, let us try to keep such games to a minimum ♥.

"Toward the end of the class, we will gather back here and enjoy a little more hot beverages before we head back, and share with each other any thoughts or insight you may have gained during your snow viewing ♥."

"Welcome back, ducklings ♥," Shunsui greeted the class as they gathered, in the classroom, with the desks pushed aside and replaced with comfortable cushions in a circle at the center of the room, each little spot accompanied with a few notebooks and pens. "Our time together on this subject is running short, so it's high time we've delved into the poetic examples of Ma in art. In Japanese poetry Ma suggests a pause in time — it takes the mind to the moment that inspired the poet, suggesting that one contemplates that moment, experiences it fully. For example, the term ko-no-ma, meaning ‘among trees’ sets a vivid scene, yet at the same time the moment is open for individual interpretation ♥. And our most clear and evident example of such a venture is, naturally, the Japanese haiku ♥.

"Traditionally, a haiku consists of just three phrases that contain kireji, 'the cutting word,' in a 5, 7, 5 syllable pattern, and traditional haiku will almost always contain some reference to nature or seasons. Not all haiku will be reflective of Ma, but since they deal so heavily with nature, and nature is often reflective of Ma, there are many haiku, then, that are also Ma ♥."

The faint grin on his face may have suggested that he had made that intentionally a bit convuluted, yes.

"An example, then, from Naitō Jōsō:

Plains and Mountains
All enveloped in snow-
There is nothing else.

Or perhaps this one, from Jōsō's mentor Bashō:

Fragrant orchard--
Perfuming the wings
Of the butterfly

And a third, from Kobayashi Issa:

A giant firefly
wavers this way and that way--
look--it flies away.

"Now, of course, with some of the translations from the original Japanese, the beats and phrases are a little off, but the sentiment remains true: a picture in nature, a breath, to acknowledge the small things that fill the negatie space of the bigger picture ♥. What are these poems really telling us? What do they make us feel? How does it inspire us in the world around us? And, of course...can we effectually make our own? And that's what we'll be doing today, ducklings, taking our pens to the paper and reflecting the art of Ma through our own words ♥.

Shunsui...sans swords, sans hat and haori, sans ponytail and about a thousand and a half years, but with academy robes and a lazy smile...must have missed a memo or a message from Yamamoto-sensei or something, which wasn't really all that surprising, he tried not to pay too much attention to things like that, but, apparently, it seemed that one of his...responsibilities (what a dirty word!) as a senior student at the Academy was to be here at some other school to...teach a class.

For one thing, it was absurd to him that Yamamoto-sensei would choose him over someone like Ukitake-san or Unohana-sempai, who were much better suited to be teaching things. For the other thing, he wasn't even sure what the Art of Space...art of emptiness? Art of Pause? was even supposed to mean.

But you know what? That was fine. Because if there was one thing Shunsui did know, it was how to just go about things intentionally wrong, so that they were less likely to ask you to do it again. Or, well, they were likely to notice that you were intentionally throwing it and lecture you about potential and ability and blah blah blah, but then he could just get in some practice on how to pretend to be listening when he was actually just napping...

Besides, once he saw who was presumably showing up in the class he was supposedly teaching, his plans for what to do became incredibly obvious.

"Ohayōgozaimasu!" He beamed at...most of the class. "Let's not waste our time with preamble, and get right to today's assignment, shall we? And that assignment is simply your names, a few of your likes and interests, and whether or not you'll be willing to ditch this class with me so that we can go do something much more fun ♥ ♥ ♥."

Yes, those were waggling eyebrows.

Yes, that was an absolutely shameless grin.

Yes, this was terrible timing on the island's part, and there was plenty of time to flee before this gets even more awkward...

The Danger Shop for the class that day would look a bit like a furniture store showroom, with a series of individual rooms with one wall missing to see inside: a kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom, living room, and a study. The aesthetics tended to lean toward an amalgamation of a certain ubiquitous modern Swedish standard and sleek modern Japanese, but the thing these otherwise wholly moddable rooms had in common was that they were all a complete and total mess. Not necessarily in the way that that current state of the back room at Turtle & Canary might be a mess, but rather that they were filled with too much stuff, as whoever put them together wanted to incorperate everything at their disposal together, a cluster of furniture, a clash of art, a jumble of knick-knacks and a variety of mismatched things and incomplete ideas.

"We have spent a good deal of time in this class," Shunsui started with a faint smile, "exploring the concept of Ma through many of the things we look at: art, the natural world, delightful little bonsai trees and even the world of film. But, today, we are going to explore the concept of Ma through the things we live in, that is, our personal spaces, our homes, places where we eat and sleep and spending hours both waking and sleeping to embrace the potential of nothingness in the worlds we make our own, to explore that crucial space that exists in-between our personal and private lives ♥.

"As you can see," he gestured toward the rooms on display, "these rooms are in considerable need of an interior design make-over ♥. So your task today is to see what you can do to make these living spaces far more pleasant, relaxing, and liveable, with a keen eye for the Ma of it ♥. A few things to keep in mind, then, as you explore the spaces and utilize its potential emptiness:

"Movement is key; one should be able to flow as freely as the energy surrounding them ♥. Relax your mind to create those moments of quiet and awareness in your design ♥. And don't be afraid to live in the now ♥."

How exactly that was supposed to translate into how to redecorate a room was, apparently, up for them to decide.

"And before you begin, ducklings, a small poem from Saikontan to keep in mind:

Length of time depends upon our ideas.
Size of space hangs upon our sentiments.

For one whose mind is free from care,
A day will outlast the millennium.

For one whose heart is large,
A tiny room is as the space between heaven and earth.
"

It mentioned a room, you see, so it was clearly related!

"Now, let's see what you can do with these horribly cluttered and claustrophobic rooms, neh ♥?"

In the classroom that morning, with the usual circle of comfy pillows at the center and the usual offerings of tea and hot cocoa, the students would also find a variety of small potted trees waiting for them, as well as their teacher with his usual sleepy, beatific smile on his face.

"Welcome back, ducklings ♥," he said. "My apologies for missing the last few classes; I had some other business to attend to, but assure you, I am very pleased to be back, and I'm sure Miss Smith-sensei did a fine job exploring the Art of Ma with you in my absence ♥. And just as she explore an extention of the Art of Ma in the medium of film with you, this week, we'll be exploring it in the medium of...horticulture ♥. Specifically, the art of bonsai, and how one may cultivate the growth and shape of a small tree to an aethetic degree to be pleasing to the eye, to the soul, and to satisfy the particular values of using negative space to emphasize the unique beauty of the plant and how it grows ♥."

With that, taking up his newly acquired Nanao-chan VII for an example, he talked a little about the philosophy of the bonsai, the particulars of pruning it effectively, and how one must shape a bonsai to acheive a desired form, just as one might shape their life in hopes for a particular outcome.

"One might find, however," he added with a faint chuckle, "that the bonsai is far more receptive to your plans than life will ever be, although, just as life may surprise you when you try to shape it, so may a bonsai tree ♥.

"For today's class," he concluded, "I'd like you all to take the time to get to know your bonsai, to start figuring out how to care for and shape it, and they are yours to keep and care for for as long as you'd like, though at the very least until the end of the semester, where we can see how you have shaped your bonsai...and how it may have shaped you ♥. Any questions?"

"Hey, guys," Summer, with a pass of a hand at the side of her head because she was pretty sure there was another spider there, or it was her imagination, but she was pretty sure it was the former, because ohmygod, what the fuck, spiders? "Soooo, I'm Summer, as some of you know, and I'm going to be your sub today because your regular teacher is apparently off 'doing Death God stuff,'" yes, those were finger quotes, as well as an eyeroll, "which I'd totally think was a made-up excuse if this information didn't come down the pipeline to me from what I consider an actually reputable source. And I mean, it is almost Halloween, so maybe it's just a really busy time of year for them? I don't know, I'm not a Death God. I'm just a substitute teacher for a class I know absolutely nothing about.

"But I did Google it, and I came across a few short articles, which I printed out copies for you guys and will pass around, about a Japanese director who apparently seems to really embody this whole 'art of negative space' concept in his work. Which is also perfect because if all these elements aren't the perfect excuse for a movie day, then I don't know what would be.

"Anyway, it was hard to pick just one of his movies, because they're all honestly jams, but this one seemed apropos not only because of Halloween but also, like, because, like, I'm only teaching this class right now because your usual teacher is off doing things in a spirit realm, and....you know what? It made sense in my head, it's a movie day, just enjoy, and forgive me for the lack of popcorn, but also thank me because I'm pretty sure any bowls of popcorn we tried for would end up being half bowls of spiders."

Today would be another class in the Danger Shop, and when they arrived, the students would find themselves in a typical dojo, open and empty save for a few weapons on the wall and a few practice dummies. And, of course, their teacher, a hand on one of his swords and a soft smile on his face.

"Last week," he started, "was a bit interesting, neh ♥? I daresay it didn't take much for you all to realize that I was not exactly feeling myself. The accent, for one, was probably a good indication, as well as the unfortunate throwing of plants..." And now he needed a new Nanao-chan. "Most of all, though, was the emphasis on butt-kicking, and while it's hard to argue that butt-kicking for goodness is an inherently bad thing, anyone who knows me knows that I am a stauch pacifist and do not advocate for butt-kicking in general ♥.

"There are," he added, with a soft, rueful sort of chuckle, "always exceptions. There are times when butt-kicking cannot be avoided, and, in those times, it is my perspective that one must be swift, decisive, and efficient in their butt-kicking, to make it as quick as possible, let it end as quickly as it can, so that one may return to much more pleasant pursuits than the often messy business of fighting and war.

"In a way, then," he continued, "one could say that this approach is quite a bit like applying the Art of Ma to fighting ♥. Ma emphasizes the use of space in a sparing but effective way; one can apply such thinking to a battle, as well. One can think to themselves: how might I approach this fight using the most minimal approach? Why do with ten strokes what could easily be accomplished in one? I know most of you in this class are not fighters, but today I would like to teach those of you who are, those of you who may one day be, and those of you who may never lift a sword again after this class, a few techniques I've learned over the years that may put the Art of Ma into your battles so that they may be as minimal and sparse as the most moving Ma landscape or cutting Bashō poem ♥."

Minsc was running just a little bit late for his class that morning, mostly on account of the fact that it was not at all Minsc running late for his class, but rather Shunsui thinking he was Minsc after a bit of an unexpected run-in with a gremlin in the apartment. So that certainly answered the question of whether or not gremlin venom actually could have an affect on a gigai.

And not only were Minsc and Boo (who looked suspiciously like a potted bonsai tucked carefully under his arm) late, but he was having an incredibly difficult time getting the Danger Shop to do what he wanted it to do once he got there (conveniently, class was already planned for that location, but the program Minsc thought he had prepared was a little tricky to find, but, after a little bit of murmuring under his breath and talking to the "giant miniature space hamster" he had with him, he'd finally managed to find something manageable and they class would find themselves in a nice wooded forest...beset with bandits.

"Ah-ha!" Minsc pronounced boldly, grinning widely and with a truly unplaceable accent. "At last! We are ready for buttkicking....for goodness! As you know, this class has been spending a great deal of time and energy building up to moments like this, when the squeaky wheel get the kick, and we demolish our enemies in the pursuit of violence and victory for the good guys! And the good guys? That is us! The bad guys? That is them! So go forth, my little buttkickers, and kick butt! Go for the eyes, Boo! Go for the eyes! Raaauuuggghhhh!"

And that was when the bonsai presumed to be a giant miniature space hamster was tossed toward one of the bandits, and the buttkicking could truly commense!

The class would be meeting again in the classroom, once more with the room rearranged to have all the desks pushed aside, but instead of a circle for discussion and tea, there were easels with canvases, tables set up with paints and inks and parchments, and clothes laid down on the floor to help keep any unintentional messes from being too difficult to clean up.

"Good morning, ducklings ♥," Shunsui greeted them with the typical sleepy smile. "I hope that those of you who participated in yesterday's cleaning and beautification project aren't entirely painted out yet, because today, I thought it would me nice to explore the Art of Ma through visual represtation and painting, which is possibly one of the simpliest and most evocative methods of expressing Ma, and perhaps a good way of showcasing where you might be on grasping the concepts ♥. We have paints and traditional inksand plenty of blank canvas, scrolls, parchment, cloth, or whatever else you might choose to paint on, and I'd like you to take some time to meditate on the negative space before you, and then cultivate it into something more with your brush strokes. Simple as that ♥.

"Feel free to paint whatever you'd like, as you'd like, but try and keep in mind to cultivate the negative space of your painting in a meaningful way, though, if you're finding your muse a bit elusive and difficult to catch on this particular day, let's discuss ideas and see if we might not be able to ge ta better hold on her, neh ♥? And never mind if you're uncertain of your own artistic talents; I am no painter myself, but today isn't so much about actual talent as it is merely the expression of ideas, and you may very well surprise yourself ♥."
sake_shinigami: (one point talking)

No Danger Shop or portals today, ducklings! The class would be meeting in a regular classroom, no elaborate art museums or breathtaking vistas, just a classroom in a castle with all the desks pushed aside in favor of a circle of comfortable pillows and offerings of tea and hot cocoa. And a poem, written carefully on the blackboard:

Thirty spokes meet in the hub,
though the space between them is the essence of the wheel;

Pots are formed from clay, though the space inside them is the essence of the pot;
Walls with windows and doors form the house,

though the space within them is the essence of the house.

"Good morning, ducklings ♥," Shunsui greeted them with a soft smile from wher ehe was already sitting at a spot in the circle. "Come, make yourselves comfortable, help yourself to some refreshments if you feel so inclined, and then I'd like you to take a moment and consider the poem written on the board today ♥. It is an old poem, sometimes attributed to Lao Tze, a Chinese philosopher, and considered to be an excellent representation of the essential heart of the Art of Ma -- it is not just the thing itself that makes it what it is, but also the things that it is not that gives it purpose and meaning. What is a teapot if not for the space in which you put your tea? Is a forest still a forest if there is no distinction between the air and what makes a tree? And how does this apply, to the greater scheme of things?

"Today, then," he continued, "I'd like us to explore this particular concept, the Art of Ma not as it applies to art, but as it applies to function. Can you think of other examples where the space between is just as important, if not more so, than the thing itself? Do you believe the poem? Do you disagree? There are, of course, no wrong answers, and should no one have any points to discuss regarding the matter, well, then..." Here he chuckled softly, "let us then just contemplate the space between our words and the function of the silence within our discussion, neh ♥?"
sake_shinigami: (explaining hand)

Hopefully, everyone would have their traveling hats and geta with them that morning, because the Art of Ma was going on a trip! Not that such a journey would involve anything more strenuous than booking a portal for the class period, because anything more than that would just not be worth it, in Shunsui's eyes, but still! Who didn't love a trip?

"Ohayōgozaimasu, ducklings ♥!" he greeted them in a cheery, sing-song voice. "I hope you're ready to be contemplated and introspective, because today we will be attempting to experience the influence of the Art of Ma through its indesputable master, Mother Nature herself ♥. If you're all ready," he made a sweeping gesture, "and will just follow me..."

And once they were through, they would find themselves on in the mountains, with striking views and a small temple nearby.

"Welcome, ducklings, to Yamadera, more specifically Risshakuji Temple perched delicately among the rocky peaks of Mount Hoshu ♥, acclaimed to offer some of the best vistas in all of Japan. This temple was built all the way back in the year 860, and boasts a ritual flame that has been burning for over one thousand years ♥."

If his tone made it sound like he thought that was sort of quaint, well, he did.

"It was here that the well-known and acclaimed Japanese poet Basho is said to have composed one of his most famous poems, and Japanese poetry is a fine study of the Art of Ma that we will get into in more depth later on in the semester, but, as you take a moment to look around you, and consider:

"Shizukasa ya
iwa ni shimi iru
semi no koe

"Or, translated:

"Ah, stillness-
Sinking into the rocks.
A cicada's cry
.

"Ah," he continued, after a moment of letting that stillness reign, for the students to look around and feel it sink into the rocks surrounding them, for them to notice the drone of the cicadas rising up from the forest, then chuckled softly, "but I am filling our negative space with a lot of empty words, neh ♥? Let's get to it. Today, I would like you all to feel the presence of ma around you in this space ♥. Explore if you'd like, but I encourage you to find a spot to sit and be contemplative on this landscape and the world around you. When you hear the sound of the gong, we will gather back here at the temple for tea and discuss our experiences. I will be here, should anyone need me before then. If there aren't any questions, then off you go, ducklings, go discover the stillness sinking into the rocks and we'll talk soon ♥."

The students would find themselves instructed to meet in the danger shop for their first class, something that may have struck a note of amusement in Shunsui since the most danger he suspected any of them were likely to be in for this class (and most of his classes, really) was the potential threat of papercuts or vertigo. But where else could he so easily render the wide, open gallery space that they would find themselves in, sleek and modern with touches of Japanese aesthetic accents, art hanging or sculptures standing at wide intervals, with large plate glass windows overlooking a vista overlooking a lake in a grassy valley at one end, mountains wreathed in fog stretching to the horizon on the other.

And Shunsui gave the students a soft, sleepy sort of smile when they gathered, bowing his head with a tilt of his hat to get things started. "Ohayōgozaimasu, ducklings ♥," he greeted them, the acoustics of the empty space around them allowing his low, rumbling voice to carry like thunder, though he spoke softly, quietly, "and welcome to the Art of Ma ♥. It is the exploration of negative space in art, in culture, in the world, and in our lives ♥. It is an appreciation of the vastness of the world that surrounds us and an understanding of our own places within it ♥." He laughed, softly. "That is no small thing! Many people can find negative space to be confusing, or unsettling, or oppressive. It can feel empty, it can feel uncertain. We may feel the need to fill an empty space between two people with words or banter or an empty house with clutter of things that make us feel tangible evidence of the things we've experienced. Eradicate the empty space to fill it with things, rather than embracing it and discovering that an understanding of that empty space can set us at ease, if only you know how ♥."

His smile grew, warming a little more. "One of the easiest ways to comprehend Ma is through art, and that is where we shall begin, ducklings ♥. Here in this gallery are many fine examples of Ma as depicted through art, most of it Japanese, not only as a bias toward my own personal knowledge but because this concept itself is heavily rooted in Japanese culture, right down to its name, Ma, which means, simply, space or pause or room. What I would like to do today is to have you begin your journey into the discovery of Ma by taking some time, walking around the gallery, and trying to find which piece in particular speaks to you the most. Take your time. Use it, begin to cultivate it even now, as you explore and consider, and, at the end of class, I'd like for us all to come together and share which pieces spoke to us. You don't have to explain why, if you don't want to, but you are invited to, and you do have to choose something. Feel free to get ideas and inspiration from each other as well; after all, in order for there to be empty space, there needs to be full space as well. One can't have a glass half empty without it also being half full ♥.

"Any questions before we begin ♥?"
