There were no blackboards in the jungle clearing classroom today. Sadness! But there was a Miss Porter, giving a smile to the students as they came in to their desks.

"Don't get too comfortable," she warned them kindly. "Today is our very last day, and, while we have only barely skimmed the top of the cream of preparation for jungle explorations, I have hopefully helped to equip you with new skills and reinforce some of the ones you may have already had in your arsenal. Today, we will take everything we've learned in our previous classes on a long expedition through the jungle one last time for this semester. I expect you to be able to protect yourself from dangerous animals and plants as you find a good spot to set up a shelter, start a fire, and find yourself some potable water. Procure some edible food, and, most importantly, have fun! I'd like each of these skills to be exhibited, but then you may spend the rest of the time exploring the jungle at your leisure. Feel free to work together, as well. I've peppered the Danger Shop with all sorts of wondrous things, to the full capacity of all the beauty this place can possess, so I hope you find them all and may take that experience with you.

"You've been a wonderful class, and I do hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have. If there aren't any last questions or comments, then, let us don our hats and begin the adventure!"

"Welcome back, ladies and gentleman!" Jane smiled at her class as usual in their little Danger Shop jungle classroom, chalk on the ready for another informative and helpful lecture on jungle survival. "I hope you're all as relieved as I am to have had a nice, quiet weekend this time around, but now it's time to get back into the jungle and learn another useful skill. Today, our discussion will be on firecraft. Let's begin, shall we?"

Fire, to destroy all you've done. )

"And there we have it. Hopefully everything you'll need for your fire, and, if not, let's get any questions you may have out in the open. If not, well, then, grab your hats, pull up those boot straps, and let's go find a good site for our fires."

As difficult as it was, Jane was doing a spectacular job of putting aside the events of the weekend and the truly disgusting person she'd decided to be, so that she could focus on class and her lesson. Really, it was the perfect way to forget all about that, until she got back home to her apartment to clean up all the Slim Jim wrappers and send all the upending undergarments from her drawers through some incredibly thorough washing.

Water, Water, Everywhere...and lots of drops to drink! )

Jane went on, with diagrams and words, until all boards were filled and then she demonstrated deftly some of the filtration systems and stills she had previously discussed. When that was finished, she beamed at the students, who seemed so good at following along. "So there you have it! Plenty of ways to extract water in the jungles so that you don't die of dehydration, and ways to purify it so that you don't die in other ways. If there are no questions, then let us traipse off and put some of these skills to use!"

Since it often rained in the jungle, Jane had decided that, today, their clearing classroom in the Danger Shop should also be afflicted with the downpour that plagued the island lately due to their new move. She'd put up great big tarps, so that the rain pounded over them as they worked by torchlight, and it made her terribly miss being out there for real.

"As you can see," she said to the class with a laugh, "our helmets and boots will come in handy today, but you'll also be quite pleasantly surprised to find out, once we get out in the jungle today, that the cover of trees and the different levels of the jungle canopy is so thick that you'll barely feel a trickle of rain inside! Yet another fascinating feature about the African jungles! So far, we've talked about our three basic essentials and we've talked about some of the dangers of the jungle. Today, we're going to talk about shelter.

And so it was that Jane took to the blackboards. There would be many, many diagrams as she went over the basic steps to building a shelter.

It wasn't all going to be lecture, though. Jane had two conveniently located trees and all of her supplies so that she could actually give a more visual direction of how to construct your shelter, or at least a variation on one.

"And, ta-da, that's all there is to it, ladies and gentleman! So let's all grab these packs here, which will have everything we need, grab our hats, and we'll be off into the jungle. We'll trek for a bit; I much prefer you to at least trek in pairs, and, when you notice it's about time to start getting ready to make our shelter, you'll have the rest of class to put together one that will keep you dry, protected, and safe!"

A beat.

"Well, relatively speaking, of course. Any questions before we begin?"

"Good afternoon, ladies and gentleman!" Jane greeted her students with the usual brightness, tinged with a little bit of pride. They hopefully had found their way easily to the Danger Shop, where they would discover themselves in the heart of the jungle. They were in a clearing, set up like a sort of rainforest classroom; the walls were the thick, lush border of trees, the floor a bright carpet of grass, the ceiling a perfect blue sky with a smattering of fluffy white clouds. There were three roll-away blackboards behind Jane (double-sided, of course, and she'd need every centimetre of them!), a classic school room desk for each of the students in a row in front of the blackboards. Jane clearly couldn't wait to get started.

Welcome to Africa! Where there are many gruesome ways to die! )

"With that said," Jane turned around brightly to the students as if she hadn't just spent the first part of class talking about all the lovely forms of death awaiting them outside this clearing, "let's give it a try, shall we? I've set things up for us to take a small trek into the jungle, where you are very likely to meet one of the dangers I've just been telling you about. Will you be able to survive? The benefit of not going straight into an actual jungle is that this is very good practise, because if you mess up, it's all just a simulation and you'll be just fine. But next time, you may not be as lucky. So be bright, be quick, and, most of all, be smart about it. Let me know if you have any questions before you head out, and then let's take to the jungle!"

"Good afternoon, ladies and gentleman!" Jane might have been all too pleased with the female-leaning tendency of this semester's roster, mixed in delicately with her already exuberant thrill of the subject in general. "And welcome to Your African Expedition Adventure! My name is Miss Porter, and I have been into the jungles of Africa many times in my life, for which I am extremely grateful. I'm a Primatologist, or rather one that studies apes and monkeys and gorillas and human beings, and so of course the best way to learn about that sort of thing is to try to witness it for yourself. I certainly hope you're excited to learn all about how to travel into the jungles of Africa, appreciate the beautiful world that it presents, and learn so much about the flora and fauna of that marvelous part of the world!

And the woman just keeps talking.... )

"Also, every class after this will from now on be meeting in the Danger Shop. If you are not sure where that may be, by all means, come and talk to me and I will ensure you have good directions! Does everyone have their boots, canteens, and hats? Who wants to start? The sooner we get through these introductions, the sooner we can get out to the Preserve!"
