Your African Expedition Adventure!, Tuesday, Period Four [ 05/10 ].

"Good afternoon, ladies and gentleman!" Jane might have been all too pleased with the female-leaning tendency of this semester's roster, mixed in delicately with her already exuberant thrill of the subject in general. "And welcome to Your African Expedition Adventure! My name is Miss Porter, and I have been into the jungles of Africa many times in my life, for which I am extremely grateful. I'm a Primatologist, or rather one that studies apes and monkeys and gorillas and human beings, and so of course the best way to learn about that sort of thing is to try to witness it for yourself. I certainly hope you're excited to learn all about how to travel into the jungles of Africa, appreciate the beautiful world that it presents, and learn so much about the flora and fauna of that marvelous part of the world!

"We won't be diving into all of that quite yet," Jane admitted, though her exuberance was chugging along steadily. "Today will be much simpler than a lot of our upcoming lessons, just to get us started out. We shall start with introductions and then the very basics of what we will need when we go exploring! After we've covered those and made sure everyone is properly equipped, we will set out, into the wilderness here on the island, for just a little bit of a hike through our own flora and fauna. It's a bit brisk out, so I did bring some jackets should anyone be in need of one, and we'll just have to keep a good pace to keep our blood going!

"So, basics! Since today's adventure is a little impromptu and, say, we haven't had enough time to prepare bringing too many things with us, there are just three main components you should have, or else your time could be quite miserable and potentially fatal. First..." Jane lifted her foot, pulling back her skirt to show off the first thing, "a good pair of sturdy boots! Preferably something up to the ankle to prevent any snake bites should you not notice them underfoot, but still flexible enough that they're not uncomfortable. Your feet are moving you, so you've got to make sure they're well protected and well supported!

"Second most important," and Jane slung from around her back the canteen slung over her shoulder, "water. This is important anywhere you travel, but especially in the jungle, where it is very hot and it's quite easy to get dehydrated. Bonus points if you're able to bring your own water, which is undoubtedly cleaner than what you'll find in the jungle. There are whole ecosystems waiting in the water in some of these places, and you'll be quite happy if you manage to keep those ecosystems from continuing development in your stomachs!

"And, last but most certainly not least, is a hat!" Jane plucked one up and put it on her head. "A hat will not only protect you from the sun, but, in the jungle, it's exceptionally important to help keep a good deal of bugs, many of which are quite deadly, away from nibbling away at you! It also leaves you much more protected against snakes that might drop from the treetops onto your head, although I'm afraid it won't do you much good should it be a panther that decides to drop on your head from the trees!

"The first lesson of your African Expedition Adventure, then, is to be prepared! And these three items are three very simple ways to help bring your level of preparedness up! Should you venture into the jungle or even just a hike through your own backyard as we are doing today, if you have these three things, you're ready to go! So, if you haven't got these things already, I've brought plenty. Grab some boots, a canteen, and your pith helmet, and we'll get started on introductions. And then it's off to the adventure!"

"Also, every class after this will from now on be meeting in the Danger Shop. If you are not sure where that may be, by all means, come and talk to me and I will ensure you have good directions! Does everyone have their boots, canteens, and hats? Who wants to start? The sooner we get through these introductions, the sooner we can get out to the Preserve!"

You could probably count the amount of times Jane stops to take a breath without even having to take of your sturdy, supportive boots.

The content of the lecture was basically what she'd heard from Bruce a lot during training, yeah. The cheerful delivery? Oh, that was definitely new.

It was nice, too. Stephanie -- who appreciated sturdy, supportive boots a lot -- was enjoying it.

. . . and counting how many times Jane stopped to take a breath, yeah. That was impressive.

As soon as Jane mentioned what they'd actually be doing this class, Cara tuned out the rest of the lecture. She already knew how to walk in the woods.

Looking at her class schedule, Annie had two classes today with exclamation points in the title that she hadn't actually signed up for. Was that bad? Should she worry? At any rate, the class that dared her not to die had gone surprisingly well, so Annie was all for seeing what this one brought her.

...until the mention of snakes and deadly bugs, at least.

As long as there were no giant lizards, James would skate through this class. Er, walk. In very comfortable sturdy boots, as one would not go barefoot in the jungle.

Grab your boots, your canteens, and your hats, and get ready to introduce yourself.

"Now," Jane prompted, "I'd like for you all to tell me your name, where you are from, and let us hear about the most exciting adventure you've had."

"Cara, the Midlands," she recited with a noticeable lack of enthusiasm, even for her. She seemed to have forgotten the part about adventures...along with a hat.

Jane was generally, as a rule, impervious to a lack of enthusiasm.

"And what's been your most exciting adventure so far, Miss Cara?" she asked, adjusting her own hat. Oh so subtly. Really. Sutble. You could tell by the clearing of her throat as she finished getting it shifted into place, as though it wasn't perfect before.

Cara wasn't even going to pretend she wasn't ignoring Jane's incredibly subtle hat adjustments, that would have required too much effort.

"I don't know what you'd consider an exciting adventure." It wasn't quite insolent, at least not deliberately, but she just didn't consider her life in those terms.

"Ah, but it isn't a matter of what I'd consider an exciting adventure," Jane said. "I'd like to know what you consider exciting, Miss Cara."

Actually Jane probably wouldn't like knowing that very much at all, considering. "No, you wouldn't."

Jane was the instructor in this situation, not the other way around, and so she folded her arms in front of her chest and regarded Miss Cara with a very plaintive look. "I do believe I would be the best judge of that, Miss Cara."

And Cara had nowhere near enough motivation to put more than a token effort into sparing Jane's sensibilities.

"There was that one time I died," she said tonelessly. "Slit throat. It didn't stick." She wasn't that interested in elaborating on that.

After a moment of searching Cara's face for signs that she was just pulling her legs, Jane's eyes drifted toward her student's throat and then she cleared her own. She may have tugged a little on her collar, which seemed suddenly quite tight.

"Yes, well, I'd say that definitely counts as an adventure," she said. "And you seem to have recovered quite nicely, I must say!"

Annie looked adorable in her hat, rest of the class. Adorable.

"My name is Annie Edison," she said, with the tone of someone who was very used to speaking up in class, "and I'm from Greendale, Colorado, and my most exciting adventure was...."

Huh. She should probably not answer that if she wanted to get a nice normal start.

"I haven't had one yet. I'll get back to you on that."

Absolutely adorable! Jane couldn't help beaming, though her smile went into a little bit of a smirk at the girl's answer.

"Oh, there simply must be something, Miss Edison!" she said. "I find it quite hard to think of anyone's life without even just a little, tiny bit of adventure in it."

"Surreal, nowhere in particular," Surreal sighed, poking at her hat.

"Ahhhhh," said Jane with a small smile. "A bit of a roamer? Then you surely must have a great trove of adventures to tell about, wouldn't you say, Miss Surreal?"

If there was a prompting sort of quality to Jane's voice, it was well because that was precisely what she was trying to do.

She just shrugged. "Most cities look the same when you're on your back," she deadpanned. "And an alley is an alley."

...someone was not aware of the sexual taboos of this Realm yet, oh no.

Meanwhile, Jane perhaps was all too familiar with them and so she blinked a little, turning red as she reasoned that, yes, Miss Surreal probably meant exactly what Jane was thinking she meant.

"Oh....goodness," she said, and thought about htis for a moment. Clearly, the girl didn't realize that Jane would probably find her stories to be wonderfully adventurous, so she tried, "Well, surely there must be something that stands out as something particularly exciting or at least noteworthy, Miss Surreal."

And this certainly was doing its job of letting her get to know her students a little more, too.

"James, from Krondor," he said. "Most exciting thing was a trip into the mountains to fetch a flower." James may be understating a bit.

To that, Jane couldn't help a small, kindly laugh. "A single flower?" she asked. "That does sound like quite the adventure! What was the reason, if I may ask, and why only one, Mr. James?"

"We got as much as we could find," he admitted. "It's medicine."

Antidote, to be exact.

"Ah, ha!" Jane nodded. "Yes; there are many plants in the jungles of Africa that are extremely prized for their medicinal qualities, too. Somehow, knowing that what you are doing will help people makes the adventure all the more satisfying, don't you think, Mr. James?"

"It was very rewarding," he said. "We managed to cure her."

He was not mentioning the goblins or the city siege.

"Well, that is wonderful!" gushed Jane. "That most certainly is a wonderful adventure."

"It was," he admitted. "One of the most exciting times I've had."

Plus,the bugs, sleeping on the dirt, and army of trolls, elves, and humans after them.

Now that you have your gear and a passing knowledge of the others in the class, it's time to march on out to the Preserve and get to hiking!

"Now, remember, stay together, students!" Jane called, leading the pack happily on the path she'd already planned out. "It will be very important once we're in the jungle! Please pay close attention to the wildlife, the plant life, or anything else. Expeditions are not only about survival, but also about witnessing the beauty of nature, and next week, we'll talk about some of the beauty we've seen today! So step light and take in the fresh air and the wonderful views!"

This was sort of neat, even if Annie did find herself looking for things like snakes. And bugs. She was maybe paying more attention to things like that than looking at the beauty of nature.

Oh, good, another walk through more trees than this city boy preferred. At least this time he wasn't on the lookout for goblins. Much.

Naturally, she's available should you need to speak with her!

I should have considered what the abbreviation for this class was going to be, because now and forever my OCD will make me think of Horatio Caine...
