In a completely shocking turn of events, especially for those who'd taken one of her classes before, Cara had informed the class to meet her down at the Onsen. Though she definitely seemed more on edge this morning than she usually did.

"In. Soak. Relax."

Luckily her charm didn't seem to have been affected.

Cara had her class meet her out on the school lawn where she stood in a pose that still managed to be imposing (if not dignified) despite the plates of fried potatoes that piled up around her. The mud filled obstacle course behind her was just imposing.

"You're having your final today instead of next week," she told them, then added n a deadpan. "Surprise." Though if they were actually surprised she hadn't been doing her job right.

"It's pretty simple, the class just has to complete that obstacle course. Should be easy enough."

Beat.

"Also watch out for the potatoes. They're not part of it."

Cara was glaring at the strings of sparkly lights dangling from where the classrooms light fixtures used to be as if they'd personally offended her.

"The island's being annoying." Someone wasn't filled with holiday cheer. "And going off past years it's going to keep being annoying throughout the rest of the month, except for when it's likely to try to kill us all at some point, which will be a welcome distraction."

Really not feeling the holiday cheer.

"So it's another talky class. Try to figure out how these annoyances might go horribly wrong and what you'd do about them."

Cara was not wearing her leathers to class today, and unlike previous times this had happened, there were no gremlin bites to be seen.

"Yesterday was terrible," she said. "And sometimes it doesn't matter if you do the smart or stupid thing, because they're both terrible choices." To pick a completely random example, talking through your issues versus ruthlessly repressing them until something gave, not that Cara would know anything about that.

"So today we're going to watch a show about how one woman copes with her terrible life."

The class were back in the Danger Shop, though the sim was of the front of the school as opposed to last week's town.

"Last week we looked as fighting in places you know, today we're fighting people you know, because another thing that happens around here is groups of people, often including your friends, deciding they would really like to kill you, and usually you can't hug it out." Or you got stabbed by your girlfriend while you did. "Add in the fact that most you you don't want to be risking killing them, and you've got to get creative."

Cara clapped her hands together. "So the first person who arrived today gets to be the crazy one, the rest of you have to come up with strategies to take them down without killing them, good luck with that."

Cara's class was back in the Danger Shop this week, which was set up to resemble the streets of the town.

"Given none of you are exactly new, you've probably noticed that this island is regularly invaded, and we're probably due for another in a month or so." Those decorations started going up in the shops, then invasions happened, it was like the tinsel attracted them. "Now some of the other teachers have mentioned what you should to if you're inclined to actually listen to the advice about avoiding the fighting, but given the likelihood of that happening, today you're getting a chance to familiarise yourself with what it's like fighting in the town. Or re-familiarise yourself."

Cara was holding class in the Danger Shop again, which looked a lot like the gym, just with an awful amount of tables and blocks and other kinds of furniture and the like scattered about the place.

"So it's Homecoming," Cara said, once they'd all gathered at the end of the gym furthest from the exit. "Which means one thing. Glitter."

With that, a soft rain of glitter began to fall from the roof. And kept falling. The layer of glitter on the floor was getting quite thick quite quickly. "You should probably figure out what to do."

They were back in an ordinary classroom this week, with Cara leaning up against the desk.

"It's the start of Parent's Weekend so I'm going easy on you this week." They could all thank her later. "Especially since the weekend itself will be an exercise in avoiding stupidity for those of you with troublesome guests. So we're just going to have two discussion questions today. The first is about what kind of plans you might have made to avoid your guests figuring out this island is completely insane, those of you who either have no guests, or whose guests don't care about it, can figure out ways to help your less fortunate classmates."

She grinned at them. It wasn't reassuring. "Once you're done with that, then you all get to come up with ways it could all go wrong. If you've been here a while, you know some of the things that could happen. Try and figure out how you'd deal with those kind of things happening."

The class was back in the Danger Shop again this week, though was set to the kitchen simulation instead of last week's fake Caritas. There was a stack of cookbooks on the desk up the front.

"Sometimes not being stupid isn't about the big things," Cara said. "Sometimes it's about the little things, like figuring out how to cook a meal without setting everything on fire so you don't starve to death. Or die in a fire." That would also be bad.

"So today you're all going to pick a recipe at random from one of those books and cook it, without bothering me for help." Sink or swim people. Also because her actually trying to help would likely end in tears.

Today, Cara was holding class in the Danger Shop, which looked an awful lot like Caritas, down to the holographic Tino behind the bar.

"We all have different ways of dealing with life's irritations," she began. "Some people try to ignore them, some people think talking will solve all their problems, and some people like to take the direct route." Three guesses which category Cara fell into.

"But sometimes we can't actually use our preferred method, for whatever reason. Maybe you're being physically prevented by a spell, or maybe the irritant in question is a co-worker who refuses to be reasonable. Which is why you're all going to take turns helping Tino with a problem. Of course it's Tino, so you'll probably spend more time trying to figure out what the problem is in the first place."

Cara had her class meet in a normal classroom this week. Given that was not a thing she regularly did, clearly this boded well for the class.

"It seems the gremlins were even more of a problem than usual last weekend." Not that she overly cared, she'd spent most of it in her apartment enjoying Surreal's company and avoided the whole business.

"Living on this island you are eventually either going to get bit, or know someone who gets bitten, there's not much you can do if you get bit." Except do your best to pretend it never happened. "But when there's someone in the room who currently thinks they're high queen of the pirate fairies, or they're being attacked by predatory trousers, then you have to do something, if only to get a bit of peace and quiet."

Cara glanced around the room. "So, let's discuss strategies for dealing with someone who's just been gremlin bit."

The weather was still warm enough to hold class outside, so Cara had told her students to meet her out on the lawn.

"This is Don't Be Stupid," she began. "Hopefully the name is self-explanatory, but in case you need it spelled out, this is a class about learning to use your common sense, though the term is relative on this island. I'll come up with problems, you'll have to come up with solutions."

Spoiler, often these solutions were going to need to involve violence.

"But that's later, t's the first class, which means we get to do introductions, even though I recognise most of you already." She pointed at a random student. "You. Name, year, either what you want out of this class, or a situation where you were the only sensible one."
