Ares waited until the class had assembled before addressing them. "Over the past few weeks, I've tried to show you just how foolish the notion of redemption is, and let me recap. Redemption is a ridiculous notion and will get you killed for no reason other simply because a bunch of idiots were dumb enough to build a city out of highly flammable materials then start a fire which they then decided to blame on you, get themselves killed and made into demon fodder requiring you to sacrifice yourself to free the ungrateful bastards. That's what redemption will get you."

He paused to let that sink in, then grinned. "Now that that's over with, let's do something a little different today and watch The Film Without Any Titans In It At All."

For a change the class had assembled at the main campfire. This probably had nothing to do with wanting to flout Umbridge's decrees.

Really.

"Now, in your futile quest for redemption, another of the difficulties you will encounter is backsliding. Kill an enemy you could have let surrender here, let another drown while begging for help there, torch a village of innocents, that kind of thing. In any case, during today's scenario, the heroes are going to have started to backslide, badly, and it's the sidekicks' job to make them see the light. Heroes, make them work for it. Sidekicks, if it gets too bad, remember a rake to the back of the head is everyone's friend."

After the class assembled in the Danger Shop, Ares addressed them. "Now, one of the many things you'll come across in your journey for redemption is old enemies who won't believe in your change of heart. So today we're going to see how you, and your sidekicks, handle meeting up with an old enemy who still bears a grudge."

"So, let's do this."

Ares glared at his class. "I hope you all had fun while I was unavoidably detained," he said. "Of course, Mr Casablancas and Mr Jekyll may find things somewhat less enjoyable in detention. Miss Summers, you'll also be joining them, although you really have to tell me, when did you meet Discord? Wells, Sheppard? Nice lists."

"Now today we have something of an interesting situation for you all," he said. "Firstly, divide into Hero and Sidekick pairs. Now once you've paired up, sidekicks, you'll discover something grave has happened. Your hero has gone completely bonkers. Your job is to try figure out what happened and how to fix it. Heroes, just drift in and out of sanity and help or hinder your sidekick as seems fit."

There was no one there to teach Ares' class today. The students were probably wondering why they'd bothered to show up, might even have been thinking about leaving, when Karal came wandering past.

He knew it was Ares' class. He'd made a point of being aware of the activities of the false god, and his absence was too good a chance to pass up. He would be failing in his duty as a Priest if he didn't seize every opportunity to help others see Ares as he truly was.

"Hello," he said, trying not to sound shy as he made his way to the front. "My name is Karal, and I am a Priest of Vkandis Sunlord. This is Altra." The Firecat jumped up onto a convenient bench and nodded regally. "As Ares is not here today, I will be speaking to you. I understand that this class is about why redemption is a foolish concept. Today I would like you to talk about why this is wrong.

In my world, there are stories, tales of the power of redemption, of the good effects it can have. I think it would be interesting if everyone in the class could briefly talk about a story from their world which is about redemption. It can be a children's tale, a novel, a movie or a television show," he only stumbled over those last two a little bit, "or even something you've actually experienced."

He looked down at Altra, who snorted and nodded. "I think it would also be a very worthwhile exercise to make a list of five reasons why you believe Ares is not a god. I am sure he will be amused by them when he returns next week."

After the class had assembled in the danger shop, Ares pointed to two lists of names. "I have, purely randomly of course, assigned you to two groups, the Wannabe Heroes, in search of redemption, and the Annoying Sidekicks, who will supposedly aid the Heroes on their quest."

"Now, today, you will choose your sidekick. Or more accurately, your sidekick will choose you, because they're annoying that way. Heroes, your job will be to try to dissuade your sidekick from following you around on your lonely quest for redemption, however actual physical force that would result in damage to your sidekick, while amusing to me, is not generally considered a good tactic. Sidekicks, you stick to your heroes like glue. Let nothing, not even physical force, stop you."

"Well, let's get started."

After the class had assembled Ares leant back and considered them thoughtfully.

"Now, I assume you have all chosen to take this class because you have some ideas about the concept of redemption, and you either agree with my take on it being a fallacy at best, and deliberate con at worst, or you wish to convince me of the error of my ways. Just so you know, the second's never going to happen."

"Now, rather, so starting from next week we will be playing out various scenarios to show, just how the world conspires to keep the average idiot redemption seeker down, but for now, we'll just start with something small and have you introduce yourself and tell me why you took the class. Also, if you've ever down anything you feel you need to redeem yourself for."

"Oh, and Skywalker? You're the TA."
