"I was going to do a final today, I remember that was the sort of thing we did," Edward said, leaning easily against the wheel. "But that's not quite in the spirit of this class, is it?"

He motioned vaguely at the sea ahead. "No, I'll leave today's class in your hands," he said. "You've got this ship at your disposal today. What would you like to do with it?"

Pause.

"The one with the best suggestion wins."

Edward looked at least a bit more sober and awake this morning, which surely would be counted as a win for all. He stalked onto the deck with his full longcoat on, a bit like a peacock, and grinned. "Well, what're you waiting for? Raise the sails!"

And so they went. Soon the Jackdaw was pulling out of port, and set course towards the Chesapeake Bay. The sun was shining, the gulls were screaming, and the salty air of the sea was everywhere.

Edward bloody loved it.

"A good sailor must know knots and sails, aye," he called, "But the best sailors also know how to steer their ship into safer waters."

This class was going to be nautically themed, yes. "You must find some semblance of control to do as you like. You must know yourself, and your goal. And you must be willing to fight for it."

A pause.

"First one to get their hands on the wheel gets to steer," he called. "Whoever knocks 'em off of it, gets to take over!"

Satisfied that the Jackdaw was situated in nothing but sea, with no obstacles for miles... he let go of the wheel.

"Come on then, lads and lasses!"

The Edward that came wandering out of the Jackdaw's main cabin, some five minutes after class was meant to start, did not look like he was terribly awake.

"I need you to raise the sails," he said, "And, er, tell me a method by which you wish to pursue your goals."

Beat.

"But also the sails. Grim'll help."

It was too warm by half around the ship for reasons Edward couldn't fathom, and apparently it was a holiday. So he discarded whatever half-baked class plans he had and dropped a rowboat by the pier.

"You lot figured out how to row a fortnite ago, don't you?" Edward said merrily. "I daresay we should give it another shot, across the bay. What d'you reckon?"

Spoiler: they would not get a say.

Edward still didn't have the foggiest what he was supposed to teach, but he was content to keep making it up as he went along. So for today, he asked the class to meet him aboard the Jackdaw. It got them a fair few odd looks from the lads, but Ed was also content to ignore them.

"Welcome to the Jackdaw," he said. "She used to belong to a Spanish treasure fleet, but we liberated her recently. They weren't using it well, after all."

He leaned on the wheel. "So before we begin I should tell you all, I'm a pirate, and if you've got a problem with that, you might want to leave," he said cheerfully. "See, our homes and families can have a habit of telling us that there are rules, that there are things we cannot be and ways we should behave. A pirate rejects such foolish constraints in favor of something better. So."

He pointed at the nearest student. "If you could be anything in the world, what would you be?" he said. "Is there anything that stands in your way to get there?"

He paused. "And while you tell me, help the lads on deck raise the sails, will you? Just as a trial, of sorts."

Right. Edward was to be a teacher. Of what, he hadn't the foggiest. But he wouldn't have been Captain Edward Kenway if he didn't swagger into class with all the airs of confidence of a man who knew exactly why he was there.

"Morning, lads and ladies," he said. "And welcome to our class about doing whatever we bloody well please. I'm Captain Edward Kenway, and I was once a student, much like yourselves. Trying my damnedest to make something of myself, but the world's always had a habit of roping in any poor bastard hoping to improve his fortunes and tie him to the ground if he lets it." Beat. "Or she."

No, seriously, what was he teaching again?

"The answer's to let go of all that and be whoever you wish to be," he said. "It's not an easy road, but it's bloody well worth it." (He would come to regret this later.) "As for today, we've introductions, the easiest of the lot. Tell me your name and your ambition, and we'll carry on, yeah?"

Please tell him something he could work with.

"Also hope you lot have a head for sailing. We'll be doing quite a bit of it."
