Like she usually did for her final class of a semester, Cara had her students meet her at the Onsen, where she was already in the water.

"Carefully applied violence will solve a whole host of problems," she said. "But sometimes you need anpther fix, and this is one that far too few people on this island appreciate. It's especially useful if you've been fighting a lot as it gives your muscles a chance to recover.

"So get in, relax, and consider the fact we're overdue for the island to go into chaos and try to kill us."

Cara's class had been told to meet her in the salle, where various training dummies, a few heavy bags, protective gear, practice weapons and the like had been set up.

"As those of you I've taught before hopefully suspected, you're actually having your final this week," she deadpanned. "Surprise.

"Now I've been told that I can't actually make you fight each other for final marks." It wasn't even like it had going to have been to the death, or anything. "So instead I'm going to have you prove you've been listening by demonstrating the kind of hitting that makes you feel better. So you can punch the bags, you can go up against the training dummies, if you can find a partner you can spar. Simple enough."

Cara had her class meeting outside. In the rain. Because she could.

"We've talking about fighting in a group, but you can't always luck out and happen to be fighting with people you know will have your back no matter what, sometimes you'll be fighting with people you aren't particularly happy at the idea of being hurt or worse, so you have to find ways to motivate them." Luckily for the class's peace of mind, Cara wasn't going to go into details here. "So today you're going to practice giving motivational speeches to convince your classmates to go fight some hopeless fight, which honestly should be pretty easy, given this place."

She grinned, always a good sign. "To properly motivate you, if someone gives a speech I think would actually work, you can all leave early."

Cara's class was once more in the Danger Shop, though it resembled the stables near the dorms rather than a movie theatre. Stables that unlike the current real thing were filled with horses.

"So, sometimes the things you need to hit are not very close to you, and while you could try walking, that often takes too long." And it got boring quickly. Trust her on this. "Which is where horses come in, as they require less time and effort than walking. Provided you're not an idiot about it."

"We're having a less aggravating class today," Cara said once her students had arrived at the Danger Shop, which was basically an admission the previous week's had been a set up. "Because sometimes a good fight helps just be being entertaining, even if you're not the one fighting."

Yeah, it was a movie day today.

Today Cara's class were in a simulation of a tavern, one closer to the one from spring break than to Caritas.

"In addition to what I'm already teaching you, it's also valuable for you to learn how to avoid a fight." Allegedly. According to people who weren't even on the island. "So try not to hit anyone today."

Yeah, it was obnoxious bar patrons week, so good luck with that.

Like last week, the class was in the Danger Shop, unlike last week, Cara was there as well. They stood in a bucolic valley, in the middle of a wide, grassy area that resembled nothing so much as a school oval, an analogy that was sadly lost on her.

"By all accounts Cassandra did an adequate job covering last week." Which was all she was going to say about it. They didn't want to know the details. "This week is all about teamwork, as you're going to work together to take down the same enemy."

Right on cue, a loud rumbling an the flapping of giant wings could be heard. "Have fun."

"Messere Cara is under the weather," Cassandra said.

She stood at the front of the class, in the Danger Shop. She had absolutely no idea how to operate the Danger Shop, so she had merely turned on the first programme that had been marked 'fighting training'.

"However, we should continue our training as per usual. The administration has allowed me to operate this simulation for today."

There was a loud clang. At one end of the large, gray, metallic room, a large, gray, metallic robot came into being.

And then another. And then a third. And then a fourth.

"I do not see any point in extending this any further than I already have. Let us hit things."

Cara had very tersely informed her class to meet her at the Danger Shop this week, and she did not look happy.

Especially not when she doubled over with a sneeze.

The Danger Shop itself bore a remarkable resemblance to Atton's sim from earlier in the week. Only snowing. Or was that sleet? In any case there was a howling wind and it'd be impressive if they could see more than a foot in front of them. There was also a pile of melee weapons made from fluorescent red or blue foam by the entrance.

"Learning to fight in adverse conditions is good for you," Cara said, the wind conveniently dying down when she spoke. "So grab a weapon and fight the people with different coloured weapons." Of course in these conditions figuring out who those people were might be difficult...

Cara's class were in the gym this week, because there's were the heavy bags were.

"We haven't talked about reasons why you might want to hit things yet." Because the name of the class said everything about the value of talking when you could just hit stuff. "It might be because you come from a dangerous place, or you might just want to be prepared, or you feel some stupid urge to protect people, or you just like getting into fight, or because you just really want to hit something." And yes, those last two were completely different.

"Now I don't particularly care about your reasons for hitting things, but you will be a better fighter if you have it clear in your mind why you're fighting, and don't lie to yourself about it." Unless you were her and were hitting things specifically to avoid thinking about why you were hitting things, but it was different when she did it. "So what you're going to do is pick a heavy bag, think about why you want to hit it, or whatever it is you actually want to hit, and then hit it as hard as you can. For the rest of class. It'll be good for you."

Cara'a class were back in the salle this week, a number of rings were marked out on the mats.

"Now that I've gotten a good idea of your skills, it's time for you to try your hands at actual sparring," she said by way of greeting. "Find a partner, pick a ring and have at it. Your goal is to get your opponent out of the ring three times. So long as you avoid blows to the head, or anything that'll result in actual injury, I don't care how you do that."

Cara's class were once more in the Danger Shop, which looked an awful lot like the salle today.

"Teamwork. Even if you don't normally expect to be fighting with allies, knowing how to, and how to adapt your fighting style accordingly is important as being effectively able to combine strengths and cover for weaknesses will enable you to take on opponents you might otherwise lose against. If you can't, you might as well be fighting your supposed allies and doing your enemies work for them."

"So today we're going to be working on working together. Find a partner, stand other there with them, then we'll get started."

Cara's class was back in the salle this week, where she stood with a staff in one hand.

"In combat your most important weapon is yourself, but that doesn't mean you should neglect other kinds if the opportunity arises to use them," she said. "A staff is one of the more basic weapons, and an easier one to find a makeshift version of in a pinch. So you're going to spend today poking at each other with sticks."

She gestured with the staff. "Form up and first we'll go through some drills, then you can pair off and try drilling with a partner. If you pay enough attention to the drills then you should be able to avoid getting hit. Much."

Cara had her students meet her in the Danger Shop today, and had an air of being entirely too pleased with herself.

"Since you all seemed to have some idea what you're doing last week, we'll be skipping the part where you learn to throw a simple punch." And if anyone broke a finger because they didn't know how to make a fist that would be a valuable lesson for them about not overstating their abilities in the future. "Instead we'll skip to the next most important part, taking a hit, because sometimes the things you hit, hit back."

"The best strategy is to avoid getting hit at all, and if if you're quick enough I'd advise you to go with that, but since that doesn't always work there are various methods you can use to limit the damage. If you're using weapons you can attempt to parry the blow. You can wear armour, though that comes with trade offs in speed, flexibility, endurance, and vision or hearing depending on the kind. You can attempt to direct the blow away from your vitals, as something hitting your head, gut, or groin will tend to have more dramatic results than elsewhere. You can also attempt to move with a blow as it connects, so it hits with less force. So you have more options then just standing there and walking it off." Teaching them how to do that effectively would take far too much time.

"Now, I could just have you hit each other to try all this out, but that would be less interesting than putting you through your paces on this." She fiddled with a control, and a giant monstrosity of raised platforms, moving walkways, and various padded arms all swinging, rotating, and generally moving in vaguely ominous ways. A giant pit filled with a squishy looking substance surrounded it. Barring a lack of neon colours, it wouldn't have looked entirely out of place on some kind of game show. "Doesn't that look fun? Also, because people generally like measuring the length of their swords, I'm going to time you."

Cara had her students meet her in the salle. There were some extremely creepy inflatable punching bags set up behind her.

"This island is insane and will fuck with your head." Welcome to Cara's friendly and cheerful greeting, newbies! "More often than not, hitting things will help with that, even if it's just because something was gnawing on your head and now it's not. So I'm going to teach you a number of ways to hit things, and you'll either find one way in particular that works for you or we'll run out of lessons, because there's a lot."

"And I shouldn't have to say this, but so we're clear, if thing that you feel the need to hit is people, find a sparring partner, or start a bar brawl off the island, because unless it's one of the many invasions or you're one of the heroic types rescuing something, if I find out you're hitting someone who didn't agree to it on island, you'll regret it." Oh look, a grin, how...comforting.

"First week is introductions, it stops the world ending or something. So name, class, experience, and then you can have a go at the creepy clown bags."

In a move surprising absolutely no one who'd been paying attention to her previous finals, Cara had told her students to meet her at the onsen and to bring appropriate clothing.

"If you need me to explain what we're doing today, then there's no hope for you," she told them. "As to the why, there's any number of reasons. Physically, soaking will help soothe overworked muscles and keep you in condition to fight. It's also good for stress relief, meaning you'll be in a better state of mind to pick your fights, and if you're fighting in a group socialising like this benefits that whole trust thing I talked about earlier in the session."

Cara had her class meet her in the Danger Shop today, and she did not seem the leat bit uncomfortable about that at all, nope. The Danger Shop itself looked like the kind of tavern you might find in any decent sized village in the Midlands...well except for the completely incongruous fridge behind the bar, flanked on either side by massive kegs.

"Have a drink. Relax," was all Cara had to say on the matter.

Today, Cara was holding her class in the Dangershop. Given that the main reason for that would be because she couldn't do the class she wanted to outside, it was possibly time to start worrying.

"Teamwork," she said shortly. "Adding more people to a fight changes how you fight, if it's with someone you can rely on, who knows how you fight and knows how to work with you, then your ability to fight effectively increases, if you have to spend as much time watching them as your enemy, you better hope your enemy has the same problem, which is a good way to lose. SO it's time for a little trust exercise."

Cara held up a blindfold. "Pair off, one of you is going to wear one of these and the other is going to guide them through a test. Once that's done, you swap roles."

Unlike the previous two weeks, Cara was holding her class outside today, having marked off a wide area of dirt covered ground just outside the salle. There were dummies set up on one side of the area, and several large circles of rope on the other. When they students got close enough, they might have noticed that the dirt wasn't so much dirt as mud. Cara apparently had something special planned today.

"You're not always going to have a nice padded floor to fight on," she told them. "Actually, you're more likely never going to have one, so today you get to work on your footing. Those who want to focus on that, punch a dummy, same way I showed you last week and which I expect you to have been practising. Those who want a challenge, find a partner and spar."

"Well, what are you waiting for?"

Cara was back in the salle this week.

"So you're not all completely hopeless." That was dangerously close to praise, there. "Still, before we move onto anything interesting we're going focus on two things today, the first of which is throwing a punch."

She stripped off a glove and held her hand up so they could see. "There are twenty-seven bones in the hand and wrist. Breaking them hurts, break them badly enough and you risk crippling yourself." Luckily for their peace of mind, she wasn't going to elaborate further on how and where she'd learnt this. "Making a fist incorrectly and then flailing around like an idiot is a very good way to break something, so it's in your best interest to learn how to do it properly."

Moving slowly enough that they could follow what she was doing, Cara explained how to make a fist, then how to strike with it with less chance of injury. "Now until I call you back for the next exercise, you're going to practice this," she said. "Those of you with less confidence stay here and strike at the air, those of you who think they know what they're doing can use the bags. Focus on form and technique over power or speed.

"I also expect you to practice outside of class if you want to be any good. In a real fight you're not going to have time to think about this, you'll have to rely on muscle memory."

Cara had told her class meet her down in the salle, where she stood in the middle of one of the padded mats.

"This is the class about hitting people," she said, once there was roughly the right number of students in the room. "If that's not why you're here, leave now."

She took her time to look over the various students before continuing. "Since the squirrels will likely revolt if there's a first week class that doesn't have introductions, that's what we're going to do. So tell me your name, why you're here, what kind of experience you have fighting, then try attacking me so I can see what I'm working with." Because that was totally a normal thing that happened in introductions, yes. "No weapons, and don't aim for the face, since I don't want to have to explain at the clinic how you broke your fingers."

She gestured at a random student. "You first."

Bond had his class meet him down on the steps of the school.

"Good afternoon," he greeted them. "One last method of relaxation is the somewhat illict thrill of blowing off one's responsibilities, such as skipping a final class, in order to do something more interesting such as going to the pub, staying in and watching sports, going out and playing them. What you do doesn't matter so much as the fact that you're not doing what you're supposed to be doing."

"With that in mind, I'll leave you to it." Though did it really count as skipping when your teacher was making little shoo-ing motions with his hands as he walked away?

[No OCD because your teacher is legging it.]
