Hitting Things Makes You Feel Better, Thursday, 3rd Period

Cara had her students meet her in the salle. There were some extremely creepy inflatable punching bags set up behind her.

"This island is insane and will fuck with your head." Welcome to Cara's friendly and cheerful greeting, newbies! "More often than not, hitting things will help with that, even if it's just because something was gnawing on your head and now it's not. So I'm going to teach you a number of ways to hit things, and you'll either find one way in particular that works for you or we'll run out of lessons, because there's a lot."

"And I shouldn't have to say this, but so we're clear, if thing that you feel the need to hit is people, find a sparring partner, or start a bar brawl off the island, because unless it's one of the many invasions or you're one of the heroic types rescuing something, if I find out you're hitting someone who didn't agree to it on island, you'll regret it." Oh look, a grin, how...comforting.

"First week is introductions, it stops the world ending or something. So name, class, experience, and then you can have a go at the creepy clown bags."

Wonder if it's too late to transfer to another class...or school.

Velma had been looking forward to this class all week. She had a lot of feelings and most of them would do better with things to punch. There was a reason her Super Patriots psychology files had the words 'anger management' written in them multiple times.

Most of those reasons were due to The Super Patriot, Inc themselves.

The creepy clowns were punchable, yeah, but not as much as the faces of Aaron and Yelena she was imagining instead. Oh and Marketing. Every last interchangeable one.

They will never stop. Never.

"My name is Cassandra Pentaghast, and I am a junior," Cassandra said. "And I believe you are aware of my abilities."

"I do," Cara said, and that sounded almost affectionate. "You can go hit clowns instead of talking more if you want."

"I believe I would," Cassandra said. "Thank you."

She only visibly fangirled Cara a little.

"I'm Four, I'm a senior now, and I have experience," Four said. "I taught people hand-to-hand combat at home over the summer."

"Good," Cara said. "I'll remember that if I need to tell you to volunteer for a demonstration."

That wasn't quite how volunteering worked, Cara.

Eh, that's how it worked in Dauntless, too. Four nodded, not surprised by this idea.

"I'm Skaar, Son of Hulk, a freshman," Skaar answered. "I've been in combat regularly since I was born in fire and lava. I've salon monsters and led armies on multiple worlds. One time I fought a robot beside a dinosaur. I know how to handle myself in a fight."

"That's a start," Cara said non-committally. "Though usually the robots and the dinosaurs don't show up at the same time."

"The Savage Land isn't like the rest of Earth," Skaar explained.

So that theme park island had had things go horribly wrong. "I've heard people say the same thing about the island," she said. Not actually being from Earth herself.

"I am Thorin, son of Thrain." And was adorably short still. Always short. "I believe I am called a junior, but your 'classes' make little sense to me. I have trained for battle since I was able to hold an ax."

Because high fantasy bullshit.

"I can work with that." People from New Zealand shot fantasy adaptations needed to stick together... or something.

"Velma Martinez and I'm a junior," Velma said when it was her turn. "I have a lot of training but not a lot of experience in hand-to-hand outside of spars."

Hand-to-hand wasn't her forte and on the field, she'd been a second-stringer. Support. Sending her vast armies of toys out to fight on her behalf.

"Don't worry, the island will take care of that." Whether she wanted it to or not, so maybe worrying was a good idea.

"I heard about that. Weird things invade? I'm going to stay in my dorm and ride it out," Velma said flatly. "I don't do the saving the day thing anymore."

That was her story and she was sticking to it.

"Smart choice." If she could stick to it.

No chance in hell. But she didn't know that yet!

"Skaar said he'd handle anything I didn't want to." She glanced at her roommate. "I feel like he's got that."

"Vider Bearskin," Vider said. "I'm a junior. I'm sort of intermediate, I've had basic holmgang training like anyone else and remedial berserker training, and a bunch of classes on fighting here. Not a lot of field experience."

"At least you know how to throw a punch." She'd worked with less.

"Kaylin Neya. I'm a sopha-thing and I'm pretty good at hand-to hand combat, daggers, and I'm not so bad at staff and sword. Okay, I'm not so great with sword yet, either, but I'm learning."

Cara will probably not say anything if your hitting happens into involve bladed weapons.

Because reasons.

Skaar punched the damn clown. The geometry of a bag of air weighed down by sand as it was launched across the room by a Hulk punch was beautiful in its own way. And the sound of it hitting the wall sand first was just fun.

"Nice," Vider said softly in admiration.

This thing had a face. An evil, creepy face, but still a face. It could be hers if she wanted it to be. She fantasized for a moment about these things dropping down on the heads of enemies. Talk about a morale hit and that wasn't even taking into account the sand.

Then Velma remembered she didn't do that anymore, she was Velma not Velveteen and her scowl deepened. God, how fucked up was she that the minute she saw something like this, she instantly started planning how she could use it to fight crime?

No, not fucked up, she told herself. Brainwashed for years to do just that. It's The Super Patriots, Inc that's fucked up (times four hundred and twelve) that they trained you to do this.

Her internal pep talk only made her angrier and soon that clown was getting a pretty savage beating. No super-strength, but anger could be a boost on its own.

She could probably use a ~~minion~~ TA if anyone felt inclined to volunteer.
