If All Else Fails, Hit Something, Friday 2nd Period

Cara had told her class meet her down in the salle, where she stood in the middle of one of the padded mats.

"This is the class about hitting people," she said, once there was roughly the right number of students in the room. "If that's not why you're here, leave now."

She took her time to look over the various students before continuing. "Since the squirrels will likely revolt if there's a first week class that doesn't have introductions, that's what we're going to do. So tell me your name, why you're here, what kind of experience you have fighting, then try attacking me so I can see what I'm working with." Because that was totally a normal thing that happened in introductions, yes. "No weapons, and don't aim for the face, since I don't want to have to explain at the clinic how you broke your fingers."

She gestured at a random student. "You first."

THEN ATTACK!

"Hey," Alana said. "I'm Alana, this is my senior year, I'm taking this class because I have this weird fascination with hand-to-hand combat classes. I think this is my third or fourth one."

She eyed Cara thoughtfully. "Like, I should just up and hit you?"

"Just like you would in a real fight," Cara said. "I won't break."

She'd had a lot more than three or four classes.

"You got it," Alana said, and tried to look casual as she circled Cara. She had one arm in front of her face to block with as she jabbed out at Cara's midsection with a sharp, sudden fist.

"You know not to leave yourself vulnerable while striking," she said as she reached down and deflected the punch. "You learnt at least that much."

That was practically effusive praise for her.

"Ronan. I Just like hitting things."

As for what he knew, he'd just go ahead and try and illustrate that by throwing a right hand at Cara's ribs.

Aww, someone after Cara's own heart.

"Decent enough," she said, twisting from the hips so the blow brushed past her side rather than connecting. "Bar brawls?"

"Occasionally." Or more than occasionally. "When I'm bored." Or drunk.

There was something disturbingly close to a grin on her face. You know, the vaguely terrifying kind.

"Off the island, I take it?" He didn't look like he'd ended up in the duckpond recently.

"This island is too straight laced to go looking for a fight." He'd managed one time and even that had been short. "So, yeah."

"You just need to find the right partner." Sadly for him the best one was already taken and didn't visit the island nearly often enough.

"I am Thorin, son of Thrain," he said with a small bow of respect. "I have yet to pick any of these classes since my arrival here, but this one seems to have more value than most."

PFF. DIPLOMACY WAS FOR OTHER KINGS.

"I've been trained in armed combat more than unarmed." Because they liked their weapons, okay?

He eyed Cara warily, circling her for a moment for an opening before going for broke with a punch to the stomach.

Diplomacy was overrated.

"You're not always going to have weapons," said the woman who might as well use hers as a security blanket. She side-stepped, avoiding the punch easily. "Good amount of power, and aimed at a sensible height."

Since he was short and all.

"I'm Kira, I'm here because I like your classes--" although this one might make her change her mind about that, "--and I know the basics of how to defend myself, but I'd always like to learn more."

Then she kicked at Cara's legs because she just couldn't bring herself to actually punch a teacher.

Cara hadn't even followed up any of their attacks with blows of her own, she was practically handling them with kid gloves.

"You need to commit to your attacks," she said, confident enough in her balance to let the kick connect with her shins. "Still, you're the first one to aim somewhere other than my belly."

"I'm Vider Bearskin and I've had standard training for a civilian from my universe, where we settle legal disputes with ritual combat, and basic training for my chosen path, plus some classes here. I'm a berserker, so I'm legally required to let you know what you want me to do next is inadvisable and could result in grievous bodily harm or death," Vider said, sounding bored. Technically, her tattoo was supposed to give this speech for her, but nobody here ever knew what it meant so. "If I start acting out of control it would be a good idea to clear the room immediately." She paused to let Cara decide whether she still wanted Vider to try to hit her.

"If you signed up for this class, you either have enough self-control not to try to murder all the other students, or you're a reckless fool," Cara replied. "In either case, I need to know which I'm dealing with."

Who was strangely tempted to hold this class next to the duck pond despite having had more than her fill of it last night.
