Reid ran a hand through his hair, an gave his class a somewhat nervous smile.

"Well, today's the last day of the summer term," he said. "I... Don't have anything special for you, I'm afraid. Just... play what you like," he added, nodding towards the piles of board games.

"If you have any questions, or want to play a game with me, I'll be here."

There were only two boxes out on the tables today.

"Today," Reid said, as the class assembled. "Today I thought we'd try something a little more complicated. Today," he continued, gesturing to the two boxes. "Risk itself is a relative newcomer, compared to the other games we've done so far, but as a war game, it's part of a tradition that goes back... that goes back as far as war itself does. Many of the games we play in modern times are in essence war games - the simulated and highly stylised battlefield of chess, for example. Risk is just more blatant about being what it is.

"The rules of the game should be in each box. If either is missing a set, or there's something you don't understand, come to me and I'll explain it, but part of learning about board games is learning how to read the directions." He flashed the class a quick smile, before sitting down at his desk.

Today the classroom was set up with chessboards, one board for every two students, plus the one on Reid's desk. The pieces sat to either side of the boards, waiting to be set up, and there was a printout by each seat.

"Since I put off the chess lesson last week, I figured that we could have it this week, instead. I'm still going to keep it-- low pressure. The basics are in the handout by your seats, and if anyone has any particular questions, or just wants a game with me, I'm here."

With that, he went to sit behind his desk.

Today, the classroom was set up much the same way as it had been on the first day - tables and chairs, and piles of boardgames, everything from chess and go, to Stratego and Risk, to Monopoly, Sorry, and even Snakes&Ladders.

"Well," Reid said, as the class arrived. "I was going to have a class on chess - my personal favourite - today, but in light of the, ah, recent disturbing events, I have decided to give you all a free day, so to speak. Relax, play whatever you like. If you need to talk, or have any questions, I'll be here, and I'll stay for a while after class, as well.

"Of course, if anyone wants a game of chess, or a quick lesson, I'll be at my desk," he added, moving to sit there.

There was another chair across from his desk today, and a chessboard set up there, if anyone wanted to join him.

Fiona wasn't exactly pleased that Professor Reid had left her with class this week, but it wasn't anything she couldn't handle. She could even handle it with aplomb considering what she knew was coming up later in the day; despite her nervousness, she was very much looking forward to her afternoon. And the class should be good practice for that!

"Hello," she said, glancing around the room, "Professor Reid is in the midst of moving so he asked me to cover 'class' today. We're playing mancala," and she gestured to all of the little wooden boards left open for the students to use.

"The rules are on the handouts here," and she pointed to a stack at the front of the class, "and there's another one with a history of the game here, though for just a little tidbit, I'll share that the word 'mancala' comes from the Arabic word naqala, which is 'to move'. So. You'll see how that works as we play."

Cue fleeing from the front of the class.
