"Well, this is our last class," Nell said, "And I want to thank you for being a part of my first class. I hope you've had a good experience and feel like you have a better understanding and appreciation for the plants and the beauty around you."

They were back in Plant Parenthood for the final class, surrounded by all of Nell's plants and whatever plants the students had left there to get a good start.

"I thought that today we'd enjoy some of the bounty of the land and talk about what you most enjoyed about the class."

The class had once again been told to meet at Portalocity for today's outing. "We're going to visit my home," Nell said. "Or at least my home away from Fandom. It's called Soulwood and, well, let's step through and I'll show you."

The portal let them out in a strand of immense trees through which a very large farmhouse could be seen across an open stretch of mowed grass and gardens. As Nell set foot on the land it almost seemed to rise up to meet her. A gentle breeze sprang up, rustling the leaves on the trees, and a hushed expectant feeling fell upon the land. Nell reached out to touch the closest tree and the nearest branch bent in to brush against her gently.

She slipped off her shoes and dug her toes into the ground sending her mind questing across her land, noting the new dens of the animals, the small herd of deer across in the glen, the stream down the hill being visited by a family of rabbits, and most importantly, the lack of any other human anywhere on or next to her land.

Nell let out a soft sigh as she pulled her focus back to the class. "Welcome to Soulwood. It's about a hundred and fifty acres of woods bordering the flatland by the house where my gardens are. Let's go take a look."

Today the class was assembled again in the back of Nell's shop. "Today you are going to plant your own roses," Nell said. "I have a variety of roses to choose from here, so please take a look and find one that appeals to you."

Once the students had done so Nell passed out instruction sheets. "The pots are here, so let's just fill them with the soil - about two thirds full - and make a hole where our rose stems will go. This is a high quality potting mix, made especially for roses, and we're just going to mix a little of my Soulwood soil into it."

Once that was done they turned back to their chosen roses. "Okay, take these very sharp scissors, called secateurs, and cut the stem at a sharp 45 degree angle just above the first set of leaves."

She made sure all the cuts were good before moving on to help them remove all the leaves and make small cuts in the bottom of the stems. "excellent. Now dip the ends into this powder. It's a special rooting hormone powder that will stimulate the root growth we need. Good, good, now carefully set your stem into the home that we made in the soil and push the soil around the stems to hold them in place.

"Now we water them - enough to get the soil moist, but not too much. This is also why the pots have small holes in the bottom, so that extra water can drain out."

After all the rose stems were planted she dipped her fingers in each pot sending them energy and encouraging roots to sprout to give the plants a good start. "You can leave these here with me till next week if you'd like," Nell said. "Give them a little time to really take hold before you bring them home and in a few weeks you'll have your own beautiful small rose bush."

Once again Nell had messaged her class to meet her at Portalocity. "Today, in honor of the Olympics - and because it's a beautiful place I've always wanted to visit - we're going to Paris to visit the Jardin du Luxembourg or more simply, the Luxembourg Gardens.

"They have amazing English and French gardens as well as an orchard with a variety of old and nearly forgotten varieties of apples, an apiary where you can learn about beekeeping, a greenhouse with some breathtaking orchids, a rose garden, beautiful fountains, and over 100 statues scattered across their grounds."

She smiled at them. "You'll have plenty of time to explore on your own once we get there and if you want to stay longer, Portalocity has agreed to bring you home whenever you choose."

Nell waited for the class at Portalocity today where she'd handwavily told them to meet. "Good morning, everyone," she said when they'd all arrived. "Today we're heading to one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world.

"Kew Gardens in England is a UNESCO World Heritage site with over 50,000 living plants." Pretty much a dream for Nell. "We'll be visiting Temperate House, which is the world's largest greenhouse. It's home to 1,200 species of plants from all over the world. There are over 3,000 plants including some from remote places such as St. Helens and Pitcairn Island.

"You can check out the loneliest plant in the world and a plant grown from a 203 year old seed. After that we'll check out Kew's Kitchen Garden before heading over to try some of those vegetables and fruits at the Botanical Brasserie."

She smiled at them. "It's a lot to see, so let's get going."

Nell had handwavily let her class know to meet her at Plant Parenthood today. That would be particularly convenient for at least two of her students, but mostly it was easier to do this sort of class back in her work area where she had all the pots and soil and seeds.

"Welcome back," Nell said with a smile. "Today you're going to make your own little kitchen - or room - herb gardens." She gestured to the tables. "There are a variety of small pots to choose from and several styles of containers to keep them in. Or you can just keep them in their separate pots if you choose. In that case the containers will be handy to get them back to your house or dorm room."

She waited till everyone had found themselves a work space. "Ideally everyone will make at least four different pots, but I'm happy to have you make more if you like.

"Okay, first thing is to decide on what you'd like to grow. I have the standards of basil, parsley, mint, cilantro, rosemary, sage, thyme, and oregano. I also have coriander, curry, ginger, lemongrass, lemon verbena, and arnica. If there are other herbs you'd like to grow let mw know, I may well have seeds or seedlings of them."

She had set out examples of each of the main herbs. "Please gently take a leaf from each of the herbs - don't worry, the loss of a few leaves won't hurt them. They're regularly trimmed or pulled off for use as they're grown. Smell them, taste them, see if there are any you particularly like or dslike. Some people have a gene that makes them dislike cilantro, but if you don't have that gene cilantro can be very tasty.'

Nell gave everyone time to check out the plants. "Seeds are here and once you've made your choices I can give you specific directions for how each herb is best grown and I'll send you home with a handout for how to take care of your plants. And, of course I'll make sure they get a good start. Normally you'd have to wait days or a couple of weeks for these to begin sprouting, but I can speed that up for you."

She smiled at them. "You'll be able to take them home today,"

Nell was waiting in the classroom when her students arrived. There were a selection of teas and some fresh baked scones set out for anyone who might like a bite to eat or drink. She'd also set out several plants on the table. She was more nervous than she hoped she was letting on, but she kept reminding herself that plants were definitely her strong suit.

She smiled at everyone as they entered. "Good morning. Please, take a minute to get a cup of tea and a scone, if you'd like, then find a seat. I figured it was only fair to bring you'uns something to eat if you were going to do me the honor of attending such an early morning class."

Once everyone was settled, she took a breath and began. "I'm Nell Ingram and I own Plant Parenthood in town. I grew up working with plants and growing things and turns out I have a bit of a knack for it.

"Plants are vital to our planet. They turn the energy of the sun into food that serves as the foundation of the food chain. Without plants we'd have no food. On top of that, they create the oxygen that we need to survive, as a waste product of their food production. I do include, of course, the phyoplankton in the oceans which account for nearly 80% of the world's oxygen. No plants, no life."

Nell clasped her hands together as she continued. "Beyond that plants add beauty to our lives in a vast number of ways. The tea some of you are drinking comes from plants. The herbs that brighten our foods come from plants. And of course the beautiful flowers and trees that decorate the world around us are plants.

"During this class we're going to visit some beautiful gardens and you're also each going to plant your own small window herb gardens as well as some petit knock out roses that you can keep in your residence or even plant outside if you so choose."

She moved over to the plants on the table. "And one thing I can assure you is that you'll leave here with beautiful growing plants." Her fingers dipped into the soil of the African violet and sent energy into it, causing it to bud and blossom in moments.

"I can't teach you how to do that, but I can use that ability to give all your plants a quicker growing time and extra strength and resilience." Nell smiled at them. "Now, it's customary to do introductions on the first day,so if you could each share your name, any experience you have with growing things, and anything you might particularly be interested in growing or learning about, I'd surely appreciate it."

Rather than a trip to the Danger Shop today, Karla's class was traveling via portal to Alnwick Poison Gardens, located in Alnwick, Northumberland, England. Off in the distance was a castle, likely familiar to any fans of the Barry Plodder movie franchise. Several hundred feet to their left was a giant treehouse, built into a stand of sweet-smelling lime trees. And directly in front of them stood a walled garden, a pair of forbidding gates barring their entrance. Even without the handy "The Poison Garden" sign above them, it would be easy to guess this was where they were going, with the skull-and-crossbones motif and the warning on either door: These Plants Can Kill. For all that the Alnwick Gardens tried to suggest a old, pastoral feel, state-of-the-art surveillance equipment watched over the poison garden; where people were free to wander about and examine the plants elsewhere, entrance here was strictly monitored and guarded. Inside the walls, many of the plants were kept behind bars, out of reach of onlookers, and yet more warning signs abounded. The Poison Gardens were beautiful, a profusion of color, and that much more dangerous for it.

"Many plants have medicinal value," Karla said as she led her students through the gates. "However, like most medicines, using too much or the wrong sections of the plant can turn your revitalizing medicine into a virulent poison. We're going to spend some time looking at the medicinal section of the gardens today, and then enjoy lunch up in that treehouse." Karla had been here several times. To, err, taste test. really. "There are over a hundred different kinds of poisonous and toxic plants in this garden, including several species of narcotics which require special dispensation from the British government to grow. Every plant in this garden can kill you, most in horrible and excruciating ways, and the staff don't want to worry about someone being stupid enough to pick a flower as a souvenir and end up dead. So keep your hands to yourself as we wander through. You'll notice how the sign says not to smell the plants? They're not kidding. Every year, a decent percentage of tourists end up passing out because they've inhaled too many toxic fumes while exploring the garden. Should you find yourself growing lightheaded or developing a headache, step back from whatever plant you're examining, come back to the gate or head to the vine tunnel at the exit, and breathe cleaner air."

Class was in the Danger Shop again today and the class walked into a waterscape. No, actually, several waterscapes. To one side was a winding river, broad and lazy. To another was a marsh, the water dark with moss and mud. A brackish stretch of beach ran along the far wall, and in the center was a clear pool, where brightly colored fish swam and smooth pebbled looked deceptively close to the surface. The one thing that all of these waterscapes had in common?

"Cattails!" Karla announced when everyone had arrived. "Cattails may be one of the single most useful plants on this earth. They grow near pretty much any body of water and can be harvested in all four seasons to provide food and other potentially life-saving items. Someone skilled in foraging can use cattails for at least eight food products, three medicinals, and twelve other helpful functions."

In fact, there were too many useful functions to explain in the time they had, so Karla was giving Lucille handouts to pass around so the students could still learn about them in their own time. Because cattails were incredibly cool and she'd fight you.

"So, we've got all four seasons represented here," she said, gesturing to the four different waterscapes. "We've got the river in winter, the beach in spring, the pond in summer, and the marsh in autumn." When the cattails were the tallest and, therefore, didn't require digging around in murky water, you were all welcome. "Do a circuit of the room and learn about the cattails in each season and what you can do with them!"

"None of you are thinking about the usefulness of gourds enough!" Karla declared as the class discovered that the room had been overtaken by a slew of dried gourds. "They're edible, which is always a plus, and even the ones that you don't eat can be useful to you. With a gourd, a knife, and some time, you never have to worry about lacking a canteen, a bowl, or a pouch to store things in."

She'd had some concerns about handing out knives to the class, but, hey. She was a Healer. And at least some of these students had been handling weaponry for as long as they'd been alive. Probably.

"I've included everything you need to turn gourds into useful items, so if you're ever stranded in the woods or a vegetable garden, you'll be all set."

Karla might live in Glacia, but she still kept tabs on Earth. So she was more than a little aggravated with politics when she arrived in Fandom for class today. They were playing dangerous games and they weren't even playing them well and that just offended Karla right down to her bones. She was half-tempted to March to DC after class was over and show them what a real ruler looked like.

"So, everything is kind of terrible today," Karla declared. "And while it was tempting to show you all how to make alcohol out of plants, I'm supposed to be some kind of role model or something. So instead, we're going to watch a very serious movie about how useful plants can be and why you should take care of them."

While snacking on roasted piƱas, or agave hearts, that just happened to come with an explanation of how to make mezcal, on the off-chance that was helpful to anybody.

Puppies!

There were four roly-poly puppies with Karla today, looking very solemn and trying to sit very still, even though their little noses were twitching like crazy taking in all these new scents. "Hello!" Karla greeted the class, making no mention of the four puppy-sized balls of floof by her feet. "Today we're going to learn to make essential oils from plants. Essential oils are basically the building blocks of anything with fragrance, from perfumes to scented candles to lotions and creams. Various types of essential oils have different uses; a few drops of clove and rosemary oils in a diffuser can make your home smell lovely, while several drops of lemongrass oil can keep mosquitos away, and just lemon oil is a natural cleanser. Essential oils made from even just one plant can have multiple uses. Lavender, for example, is said to be a calming scent, and can be added to teas to act as a stomach soother, and can help with insomnia. Because it's such a multipurpose oil, today we're going to learn how to make lavender essential oils, though this method can be used with any scented plant you have access to."

There were multiple homemade distilleries set up, one for each student, and at each station was a large armload of dried lavender plants. The distilleries were made up of pressure cookers, rubber tubing, a bucket of ice, and an essencier. "If you finish in an hour, you can make bath salts," Karla continued, pointing to her desk where yet more items were piled. "And, if you finish that, too..." One of the puppies managed to fall over. From a sitting position, yes. Karla knelt and scooped him up. "If you finish making the oils and the bath salts and there's still time? There are puppies to play with."

"Time to get messy!" Karla crowed when it was time for class to start. "Well, Danger Shop messy, so you'll be fine after class, but until then, I hope you're prepared to spend the hour turning interesting colors. Today, we'll be learning how to make inks from plants, but since different types of plants are in season at different times of the year, we have to rely on a little bit of technological help."

The Danger Shop opened up to a field that couldn't exist in nature. Oak trees were putting forward new leaves next to elderberry trees with branches heavy with fruits and walnut trees, their roots all but covered by fallen nuts. Flowers were in full bloom and so were many kinds of different berries. Patches of beets and carrots and ripe tomatoes could be found just by looking. Most incongruous were the workstations littered about; counters and stovetops with bowls, mesh strainers, mortars and pestles, empty glass bottles and more.

"At its base, ink is just watery pigment and you can get pigment from damn near anything," Karla explained. "People have been making ink from ground up beetles, gemstones, and yes, plants, for millennia." She frowned. "I think millennia for most of you? I don't know when your ancient civilizations invented ink. No matter. Making ink is incredibly easy, though it can be time-consuming. We'll be cheating a bit today so you can have the full experience, but most flowers and berries can produce a simple ink in about a half an hour."

She headed over to the trees, stopping between an oak and a walnut tree. "Black ink can come from three pretty simple sources. Oak galls, black walnuts, and acorns." She turned over a leaf and showed the class the big green lump on the other side. "Oak galls come from wasps laying eggs on the underside of the leaves. As the larvae develop, the tree secretes tannic and gallic acids, which result in this--an oak gall or an oak apple. These can be harvested and dried and used to make gallic ink." Karla plucked the gall from a leaf and it immediately turned dry and brittle in her hands. "We're skipping the drying process for now. Walnuts are another way to get a good, solid ink. Using boiled walnuts, you can end up with a deep, rich ink that lasts for a long time."

She snagged several of the walnuts from the ground, calling in a nutcracker to open one up and eat the meat inside. "You've got about twenty minutes to gather as many different sources of pigment as you can," she said, nodding to the baskets that were stacked by the individual stations. "Collect as many as you'd like and then head back to your stovetops. There are a variety of instructions there to explain your next steps. Be aware, though..." She held up her hand, fingertips already stained darker by the tannins in the walnut shells, "...this is not a neat process. Go!"

It felt good to be back on the island again and in front of a class. Even though it seemed like she only came to the island these days when everything was exploding, Karla still missed Fandom and all of its whimsical madness. Though since she did have a class to teach, she should probably get on that, rather than reminiscing about the times she'd had class in this very room and the state of her old locker.

"Hello, class, and welcome to the Magic of Plants," she said, giving her class an easy smile. "Which, depending on where you're from, might have a disappointing ratio of magic to plants. This isn't some introduction to witchcraft--that's not how my Craft works--we are going to learn to unlock a lot of the uses of some common plants you might come across in your day to day life. You likely already know that plants are integral to our survival as a species; they feed us, clothe us, shelter us, provide us the bases for a great many medications and remedies. Also, tea, coffee, and chocolate all come from plants and without those necessities, we'd have to have serious conversations about how much of life is actually worth living."

Because coffee. Life-giving, precious coffee.

"But since you've all been on the island for at least a semester, then you know what the first week is for. So, introductions! Name, class, why you took this course, and then an old favorite ice breaker of mine--two truths and a lie. Tell the class two truths about yourself and one lie and we'll all guess which one is a lie. And then once that's done, we're going to use plants to make papyrus sheets like your Ancient...Sumerians did? No, that doesn't sound right, hold on." Karla looked at her phone to double check. "Ah! Ancient Egyptians! Right, like the Ancient Egyptians did."
