The Magic of Plants, Wednesday, Per 3

Puppies!

There were four roly-poly puppies with Karla today, looking very solemn and trying to sit very still, even though their little noses were twitching like crazy taking in all these new scents. "Hello!" Karla greeted the class, making no mention of the four puppy-sized balls of floof by her feet. "Today we're going to learn to make essential oils from plants. Essential oils are basically the building blocks of anything with fragrance, from perfumes to scented candles to lotions and creams. Various types of essential oils have different uses; a few drops of clove and rosemary oils in a diffuser can make your home smell lovely, while several drops of lemongrass oil can keep mosquitos away, and just lemon oil is a natural cleanser. Essential oils made from even just one plant can have multiple uses. Lavender, for example, is said to be a calming scent, and can be added to teas to act as a stomach soother, and can help with insomnia. Because it's such a multipurpose oil, today we're going to learn how to make lavender essential oils, though this method can be used with any scented plant you have access to."

There were multiple homemade distilleries set up, one for each student, and at each station was a large armload of dried lavender plants. The distilleries were made up of pressure cookers, rubber tubing, a bucket of ice, and an essencier. "If you finish in an hour, you can make bath salts," Karla continued, pointing to her desk where yet more items were piled. "And, if you finish that, too..." One of the puppies managed to fall over. From a sitting position, yes. Karla knelt and scooped him up. "If you finish making the oils and the bath salts and there's still time? There are puppies to play with."

Seriously? Seriously, Ms. Karla? You expected them to pay attention when there were puppies?

By the time she was done explaining today topic, Summer would have no idea what they were supposed to do in class today.

Because puppies. Floofy puppies. Sweet little floofy puppies trying to be obedient. Homygod.

Okay, so the smell of lavender in here was pretty overpowering. And there were puppies.

Tip wasn't managing to pay attention to anything properly just now.

Make yourselves some essential oils. There's even a small bottle for you to keep after class is over.

Please don't burn yourself on the pressure cooker.

Tip kind of wished she had a clothes pin for her nose. Or that they were doing clove oil instead.

Lavender wasn't her favorite thing, no.

Still, this whole process had a nice "mad scientist" vibe to it, so she was enjoying it anyway.

Lavender reminded Khadgar of home, so he was smiling as he put together his bottle of oil, both carefully and quickly, because puppies.

Summer putzed around a little to watch how the others were doing this, since, you know, she was only vaguely aware that there had been an explanation because, hello, puppies. Still, she....thought she did an okay job? Nothing broke, so she considered it a win.

Was it possible to blow something up here? Because if it was, Kaylin would probably manage it. Pressure cookers? This was a terrible accident waiting to happen.

Even if serious damage was not done, it was highly unlikely that any oils or bath salts would end up being accomplished by Kaylin.

Karla should have let her go straight to the puppies.

Merrill was pretty handy with distilling essential oils using the kind of equipment normally available to the Dalish.

But with a pressure cooker to deal with, and the distraction of puppies? This was more or less a disaster about to happen.

Okay, not really, but she was rushing through the process and the final product was not exactly top quality.

There's a recipe to make bath salts from the essential oils you just tinctured and a few more ingredients.

Please don't eat the bath salts and chew off someone's face.

Khadgar wasn't sure what he'd use bath salts for - maybe save them for a nice girl? - but the process was new, and therefore interesting.

Okay, there was a recipe. This might be a little more Summer's soeed, and she was thinking they might make a good bribe...errr, gift to curry some favor with her mom.

Okay, this was new. Not too complicated, though, and Merrill managed, despite not really knowing what she'd do with bathsalts.

Okay, you made it this far. Play with the puppies!

Khadgar ever-so-carefully picked one of the puppies up, and let it lick his face.

Best. Class. Ever.

You know what? Puppies were even better when they were earned. Today was one of the best days...heck, this whole week was doing a pretty good job of making up for the weekend.

Yes, don't mind Merrill, she'd just be over here happily buried in a pile of puppies for the rest of the class.

Who might have some ideas how to use the distillery for other, non-perfume needs.

Yes, Lucille was paying attention. Being TA for this class was certainly offering new interesting skills. As she wasn't fond of pets, she hardly noticed those fluffy things.

Who has used a distillery to make perfumes and poisons both.

Zack was a puppy on a mission.

Or, rather, Zack had been told to expect puppies, and he kind of wanted to meet them in person before their trip to the shelter. And he knew that Karla had a class today, and...

"Wow, it's weird being back in here..."

He was standing in the doorway, a little distracted by his surroundings. He clearly hadn't noticed the pups yet.
