Plants: Tuesday First Period
Today the class was assembled again in the back of Nell's shop. "Today you are going to plant your own roses," Nell said. "I have a variety of roses to choose from here, so please take a look and find one that appeals to you."
Once the students had done so Nell passed out instruction sheets. "The pots are here, so let's just fill them with the soil - about two thirds full - and make a hole where our rose stems will go. This is a high quality potting mix, made especially for roses, and we're just going to mix a little of my Soulwood soil into it."
Once that was done they turned back to their chosen roses. "Okay, take these very sharp scissors, called secateurs, and cut the stem at a sharp 45 degree angle just above the first set of leaves."
She made sure all the cuts were good before moving on to help them remove all the leaves and make small cuts in the bottom of the stems. "excellent. Now dip the ends into this powder. It's a special rooting hormone powder that will stimulate the root growth we need. Good, good, now carefully set your stem into the home that we made in the soil and push the soil around the stems to hold them in place.
"Now we water them - enough to get the soil moist, but not too much. This is also why the pots have small holes in the bottom, so that extra water can drain out."
After all the rose stems were planted she dipped her fingers in each pot sending them energy and encouraging roots to sprout to give the plants a good start. "You can leave these here with me till next week if you'd like," Nell said. "Give them a little time to really take hold before you bring them home and in a few weeks you'll have your own beautiful small rose bush."
