The Magic of Plants, Wednesday, Per 3

Karla might live in Glacia, but she still kept tabs on Earth. So she was more than a little aggravated with politics when she arrived in Fandom for class today. They were playing dangerous games and they weren't even playing them well and that just offended Karla right down to her bones. She was half-tempted to March to DC after class was over and show them what a real ruler looked like.

"So, everything is kind of terrible today," Karla declared. "And while it was tempting to show you all how to make alcohol out of plants, I'm supposed to be some kind of role model or something. So instead, we're going to watch a very serious movie about how useful plants can be and why you should take care of them."

While snacking on roasted piñas, or agave hearts, that just happened to come with an explanation of how to make mezcal, on the off-chance that was helpful to anybody.

Don't forget to spit the plant fibers out, once you chewed all the sugar away. Every desk has its own spittoon for just that purpose.

Summer was always totally all about movie days, but somehow, a movie day instead of potentially making alcohol out of plants seemed like a little bit of a let-down. A little bit. She was ultimately fine with movies and not getting plant juice on her clothes today.

Shiemi watched the movie, slightly distracted.

(Not so distracted that she didn't wonder what a Lorax was, though.)

What did you think of the movie? Powerful? Too simplistic? Was all the singing necessary?

"I liked it," Summer said. "It was cute."

A+ top-tier film critic over here, guys.

Oh, like you were getting away with just that, Summer.

"Cute how?" Karla asked. "Anything in particular?"

Uurrrggghhh....

"It was just kind of sweet," Summer shrugged. "I liked how he went through all that because he waneed to impress that girl," because of course she would, "and ended up learning how plants are important and stuff. Cute. Twelve year old me would have loved it."

"And what does..." Karla tried to gauge Summer's age and failed. "...current year old you think? It's cute and it's sweet, but did you care for it? Does it matter to you at all?"

"It's a good message," Summer reasoned, "but kinda cheesy. Like, I don't think. I'd ever bother watching it on my own."

Or at least, not that she'd admit to, shut uo.

"Did you learn anything?" Karla asked. "Or was that part of what made it so cheesy?"

"I mean," Summer shrugged, "there's nothing new to learn there. Like any post-industrial society doesn't already know, deep down, that deforestation and the destruction of nature is a bad thing already? It's just that in a post-industrial society, people are really good at ignoring things, pushing it aside, and doing what they know is bad anyway because the benefit outweighs the idealistic idea of just leaving nature alone. We're incredibly destructive by nature, so the attempts to moralize on the idea of preservation is really nothing new. It might leave an impression on younger mind, but most people who could do anything about it are already too jaded to care."

There it was. Karla'd known that if she'd just kept prodding, eventually Summer would come out with a real critique.

"So, are you saying that destruction is an incontrovertible part of the human condition?" she asked, grinning. "Or simply an incontrovertible part of your current capitalist culture? Because we can look a a great number of smaller, non-industrial tribes that do not view destruction with the same jaded air you mentioned."

Hola, Karla!

"Sensei? Ano..." Shiemi had a question. and some agave. "This plant? Uhm. A-ag... Ajy..."

"Agave," Karla repeated, giving Shiemi a warm smile, and glancing towards her hair to see if she could glimpse Nii-chan. "A plant native to Mexico. What about it?"

"Agave?" Shiemi tried to repeat that. Did she get it right?

"Ano. Is this the same as a Century plant? I... I've only seen drawings, but it looks similar."

And Nii-chan? He wasn't in her hair. "Eh! Nii-chan?!" At least not anymore. He was in the air jumping for the teacher. Hopefully it was okay?

"It is," Karla said, giving Shiemi a pleased smile. "It's--oof! Hello, Nii-chan." Fortunately, Karla was used to things launching at her face. She had children with wings. "Glad to see you, too."

Then Sensei would most definitely have experience listening to a child's excited babbling conversation style! Though probably she was not used to it coming from a demon plant creature.

"Nii! NiiIII nii. Niiiii nii, nii nii..."

Nii-chan was communicating rapidly to the 'big sister', gleefully bouncing as if she was Shiemi. Since he was a baby greenman as well as a demon, though, any possible telepathic understanding was likely coming across more more as impressions and concepts than actual words, but it was all about how interesting the movie was and about a book that Shiemi had found with all the fun plant stories and their last exorcist adventure with the house spirits that had become evil and tried to eat the student renting the house and how he'd learned a new whip technique and and...

Her question momentarily forgotten, Shiemi was tilting her head and smiling like she was a mom about to burst with happiness and pride. "He really likes you. He's friendly and I've seen him tease people, but he usually only treats me like this."

"Is that so?" Karla asked, running her finger along the crown of Nii-chan's head-leaf (she wasn't sure whether it was a hat or an actual physical protrusion). "I wonder if it's because he can sense I'm a Queen." She gave Shiemi a smile. "It's more than a statement of political power back home. Queens are witches born with the power to do a very specific subset of Craft."

Today's class was... unexpected. Not that it was Lucille's place to judge the teacher, but she could do it as silently as possible. She always had a feeling that Karla noticed such things.

"Something to say, darling?" Karla asked, not even looking at Lucille and somehow noticing the judging anyway.

This was one of the negative aspects of working for Karla.

"Oh, no. Just lost in thoughts." Lucille assured her. Which was true. She didn't actually want to say anything.

Well, there had to be one.

"About the movie?" she asked, not even bothering to hide her amusement. "I find it to be oddly thought-provoking as well, even in its childishness."

"I find I still have to get used to movies." That wasn't entirely untrue. So far she had disliked most movies.

"Is there something about them that still discomfits you?" Karla asked, pouring Lucille a cup of tea and floating it over to her TA while she fixed a cup for herself.

"I am more used to reading a story and letting my imagination create the images," Lucille replied, avoiding the subject of silliness or pointless stories.

"Thank you." She took the cup out of the air, worried that she would fumble.

The cup remained steady in the air until Lucille had grasped it and then the Craft holding it up vanished, leaving her supporting it.

"What kind of stories do you like?" she asked, taking a sip of her own tea.

"I prefer them to be passionate," Lucille said, taking a small sip. "When people dare to express emotions that others may fear."

"Dark and thrilling, though not necessarily horror?" Karla asked. "Books that plumb the darker sides of one's own nature and examines them unflinchingly?"

Now Lucille almost smiled. "Yes. I hear you know these kinds of novels too."

"Perks of being a Black Widow," Karla said. "Digging into the darker areas of people's psyches is actually considered required reading."

Perhaps if Lucille had the option of becoming a Black Widow she would be able to make use of her interests in a constructive way.

"Required reading?" Now she smiled.

Orrrr maybe not. Terreille was filled with witches who used their Black Widow training in less-than-constructive ways.

"Black Widows are mind-Healers," Karla explained. "Thus, we need to know all the ways a mind can go wrong to learn how to fix it."

totes not autobiographical, what?

...I hadn't actually anticipated waking up to MORE bullshit politics for Karla to be furious at BUT HERE WE ARE!

I can just IMAGINE the phone calls between Momo and Karla :)

Karla: I wouldn't waste poison or craft on him. Straight up blades. Get me a portal.
Momo: And cause an international incident?
Karla: HE is an international incident!
