Magic of Baking: Week 3, Period 3

Alysha was still cursing (but not too loudly, even 1,000 miles away, that was just asking for trouble) the 'family emergency' that had dragged her back home last week. It was less an 'emergency' than the aunties being a little peckish, and it would have been much more manageable if she hadn't just been back for the Ritual on May 1.

"Welcome back, everybody," she said, once they were assembled in the Home Ec room. "I'm sorry I couldn't be here last week, and thank you very much to Sookie for ably taking over the class. We're going to continue our look at the simpler baked goods today by making cookies. Cookies are generally pretty easy. You cream butter with sugar, add flour and any other ingredients and bake 'em for about 10 minutes." Alysha, as always, had a view of baking that didn't really include the possibility of failure.

"If you haven't made cookies before or you're not comfortable with it, I'd suggest you stick with making chocolate chip cookies or snickerdoodles today. They both have just a few ingredients and don't require anything more than a spoon to mix. If you have more experience or you're just feeling adventurous, choose a recipe from the book on the table and go to. Anything you need is either already on the tables or in the refrigerator. The butter's already softened and on your workstations as are copies of both the chocolate chip and snickerdoodle recipes."

"Any questions for the class? Okay, find a partner to work with if you like, and i'll be wandering around if you run into any troubles."

Karla snagged the snickerdoodle recipe and examined it.

Ha!

She knew snickerdoodles weren't really made of people!

Rilla decided that snickerdoodle was a completely made up word.

Sara was reasonably certain that snickerdoodle was a made-up word, but she kept repeating it to herself as she looked over the recipe, experimenting with the sound of it. You could make it sound like an insult, or a mystery, or the funniest thing in the world, or . . .

Alex listened to the lecture, trying to decide what recipe to try. She'd helped Jamie make chocolate chip cookies last week -- maybe she'd make those today.

Cookies. Not quite her arch-baking-nemesis since she'd helped Jaime (once), but still, Momoko glared at the recipes book.

She was totally making the easy ones.

Cassidy was a big fan of chocolate, so she was gathering ingredients to make chocolate chip cookies.

The problem with Karla and baking (at least sometimes) was that the ingredients didn't always conform with her expectations. In those cases, Karla usually went with her expectations over what the recipe said.

Miss Gale had said that one creamed together the butter and sugar. Karla's recipe called for cream of tartar. Clearly, they both meant dairy cream, so Karla helped herself to a bit of the heavy cream she found in the fridge, and missed the bottle labeled 'cream of tartar' in the cupboards.

Using two tablespoons instead of two teaspoons? That was just Karla not paying attention. She was busy trying to get most of the eggshells out of the bowl...

In theory, Sara knew how to cream butter and sugar; many an afternoon had been spent in the King kitchen watching while Felicity compounded some delectable treat or other, and many hours of those afternoons had been spent in surreptitious observation of the techniques and mysterious machinations that went into the baking.

That did not, however, stop her from making a hopeless mess of her attempt. Nor would it do a thing to forestall the inevitable mishap that occurred when she managed to knock an entire bottle of misplaced thyme into the mixing bowl.

She supposed that eventually, once the mortification wore off, there would be some sort of pun to be derived from the whole experience.

Rilla would have been fine with her snickerdoodles if she hadn't managed to mix up the salt and sugar.

As it was, they were beautiful looking cookies. Just don't try one.

Alex decided to try her hand at chocolate chunk cookies. She did love chocolate, after all. It was like a chocolate chip recipe, so she thought it'd be fairly simple.

She gathered the ingredients and set to work.

Right. Cookies. She read through the recipe and gathered her ingredients and tools, then stepped back. Her counter looked way more crowded and messy that it did when Jaime made cookies.

She frowned, but reached for the measuring cup. "Okay, flour... baking soda... sugar, and... more sugar." She added it all to the bowl and reached for the recipe again. "Okay, now what? Ah! The sugar was supposed to go in a different bowl?" She stared at her work so far and wondered if she could separate it out. Probably the brown sugar, yes, since it was still clumped there in the pile of white.

She dug a spoon into it and managed to pull most back out. The white sugar, though was totally not going to be... well. It did look a bit different. She set to the bowl with her spoon, sifting out as much sugar (and as little flour) as she could. "There. Good! Now I am totally going to follow this line for line!" Not that she understood why it had to be done that way, but if the recipe said, she was totally doing it.

Sookie was there and -- once again -- keeping a close eye to make sure no one was set on fire.

This was a big concern for her, okay.

Alysha just said "cream butter with sugar."

What Karla does is ENTIRELY her fault.
