Magic of Baking: Week 3, Period 3
Alysha was still cursing (but not too loudly, even 1,000 miles away, that was just asking for trouble) the 'family emergency' that had dragged her back home last week. It was less an 'emergency' than the aunties being a little peckish, and it would have been much more manageable if she hadn't just been back for the Ritual on May 1.
"Welcome back, everybody," she said, once they were assembled in the Home Ec room. "I'm sorry I couldn't be here last week, and thank you very much to Sookie for ably taking over the class. We're going to continue our look at the simpler baked goods today by making cookies. Cookies are generally pretty easy. You cream butter with sugar, add flour and any other ingredients and bake 'em for about 10 minutes." Alysha, as always, had a view of baking that didn't really include the possibility of failure.
"If you haven't made cookies before or you're not comfortable with it, I'd suggest you stick with making chocolate chip cookies or snickerdoodles today. They both have just a few ingredients and don't require anything more than a spoon to mix. If you have more experience or you're just feeling adventurous, choose a recipe from the book on the table and go to. Anything you need is either already on the tables or in the refrigerator. The butter's already softened and on your workstations as are copies of both the chocolate chip and snickerdoodle recipes."
"Any questions for the class? Okay, find a partner to work with if you like, and i'll be wandering around if you run into any troubles."

Ha!
She knew snickerdoodles weren't really made of people!

She was totally making the easy ones.
Bake Cookies! [5-26]

Re: Bake Cookies! [5-26]
Miss Gale had said that one creamed together the butter and sugar. Karla's recipe called for cream of tartar. Clearly, they both meant dairy cream, so Karla helped herself to a bit of the heavy cream she found in the fridge, and missed the bottle labeled 'cream of tartar' in the cupboards.
Using two tablespoons instead of two teaspoons? That was just Karla not paying attention. She was busy trying to get most of the eggshells out of the bowl...
Re: Bake Cookies! [5-26]
That did not, however, stop her from making a hopeless mess of her attempt. Nor would it do a thing to forestall the inevitable mishap that occurred when she managed to knock an entire bottle of misplaced thyme into the mixing bowl.
She supposed that eventually, once the mortification wore off, there would be some sort of pun to be derived from the whole experience.
Re: Bake Cookies! [5-26]
As it was, they were beautiful looking cookies. Just don't try one.
Re: Bake Cookies! [5-26]
She gathered the ingredients and set to work.
Re: Bake Cookies! [5-26]
She frowned, but reached for the measuring cup. "Okay, flour... baking soda... sugar, and... more sugar." She added it all to the bowl and reached for the recipe again. "Okay, now what? Ah! The sugar was supposed to go in a different bowl?" She stared at her work so far and wondered if she could separate it out. Probably the brown sugar, yes, since it was still clumped there in the pile of white.
She dug a spoon into it and managed to pull most back out. The white sugar, though was totally not going to be... well. It did look a bit different. She set to the bowl with her spoon, sifting out as much sugar (and as little flour) as she could. "There. Good! Now I am totally going to follow this line for line!" Not that she understood why it had to be done that way, but if the recipe said, she was totally doing it.
