Powers, Identity, and The World; Embracing the Real You - Friday, Period One
"So," Rinoa said, brightly, once everyone was settled in. "Let's talk about the trip."
All right, so Rinoa hadn't gone on the trip. Mexico and sunshine would have been nice, sure, but she and Squall had had the apartment to themselves, which meant she'd had no trouble staying warm. It was fun to see the island empty out and feel like you were walking through a ghost town. Just her?
"From what I've heard, it was a few decades in this current time's past," she added, "which means that most students would have had to hide bits of themselves away. The ability to do magic, a set of horns on your head, those would have stood out, and raised questions. But the need to hide or lose some of yourself for a week, that's not just limited to powers, either. You had to be careful not to mention the Internet, or sigh too loudly about your missing cell phones."
She frowned at her co-teacher. "They were just dead, all week?"
//No reception at all,// Jono agreed with a shrug. //Didn't bother me as much as it would bother most, but then, I've been without phones for most of my life anyway.//
So, his biggest hardship had been the disco.
//That said, last week was a study in either embracing unfamiliar situations and the limitations they put onto us, or resenting them, it seems. Doctor Lecter,// Jono was going to call him that in class, weird as it felt, //found a workaround for my inability to run around wearing a swimsuit, for example. But everyone had to deal with the food, and the music, and... well, the macrame was optional, thank goodness.//
"Increasingly glad I skipped it," Rinoa laughed, raising an eyebrow at the mention of Doctor Lecter. "But, okay. Maybe you enjoyed your time away from Fandom, in the warm air and sunshine. Maybe you didn't like having to keep part of yourself under lock and key. Let's talk."
