Powers, Identity, and The World; Embracing the Real You - Friday, Period One

//Right,// Jono said, once the class had gathered in the Danger Shop today. //So, we've lost a few weeks from our syllabus by this point, a few of us are probably feeling more than a little worse for the wear, there's a camping trip on the weekend for those who are feeling so inclined, and Easter is in two days for the handful of you who care. What we had wanted to do is to let people come in here, in a safe environment, and if they were feeling up to the challenge, encourage them to let go, with or without their powers, to see what they're really capable of. And that offer is still on the table, for the record. If anybody would like a chance to use the Danger Shop as a safe place to find the upper limits of their powers, either Rinoa or myself would be happy to assist you.// He glanced over at Rinoa, who was sitting quietly across the room with her dog keeping her company. Okay, on a better week, maybe they'd both be happy to assist. Jono was here for people either way, at least. //If you're worried about our safety, there's no need. We're both shockingly difficult to damage.//

He shoved his hands into his pockets and shrugged his shoulders.

//Since March was… one hell of a month and all, we're going to give you a few options today. If you care to talk about what happened and what that means for you and your identity, stay right here, and I'll have the Danger Shop bring up some cushions so you can make yourself comfortable as you do so. If the last thing you want to do is more sharing, over there are some punching bags. Beat th'shite out of them, work off some of that frustration, feel free to use your powers if you're comfortable doing so, otherwise, I'm pretty sure we've all got perfectly functional fists and feet that'll do the job just as good. And...// He tilted his head a little. //If any of you want to take us up on that other offer, if you want to step into a private, safe corner of the Danger Shop and really let loose to test your upper limits, come talk to me. I'll have to do this one at a time, but I think there's enough time in this class to handle any takers, and if we don't have time or you aren't feeling up to it quite yet, know that the offer is going to stay on the table for at least as long as I'm still a teacher. Please, come talk to me any time.//

That seemed like it about summed it up, so Jono waved a hand out toward the room.

//Here in the pillows to talk. Over there to the punching bags to let off some steam. Anyone who wants to test what their powers are capable of in a safe space, come talk to me.//

It's one of those Jono lectures. You know. The sort where he uses an awful lot of words to, overall, actually say very little.

There are big, fluffy pillows set up around one corner of the room, for anyone who wants to talk about their experience over the past month, and what they think it means about who they are. Remember, respect is still the rule here. No name-calling people who have just been through fresh trauma, for the love of you-will-be-removed-from-the-room, please.

For a slightly more physical sort of venting. Use your powers or beat on them the good old-fashioned way. Nobody will blame you if you absolutely destroy the damn things, really.

This one is the option of the private session behind that big ol' Danger Shop wall that Jono programmed in. Nobody has to see what you're capable of, the safety protocols are dialed up to maximum, and Jono is willing to bring up whatever simulation you think you need in order to let loose with the powers mojo.

If you want to give this a try, but don't feel comfortable doing it during class hours, come talk to Jono anyway, and he'll see what he can arrange for you.

Anders took several minutes to join Jono in the private area. He felt drawn to it by a kind of morbid fascination: if he was going to use his powers against people -- and the last week had showed he was willing to do that, if only when out of his head -- he needed to know how much damage he could do. He had an inkling that what he'd done in Rapture and against various island invaders was barely the edge of a deep, dark pool.

"I want to try this," he said, sounding as though he wasn't sure Jono would let him.

Jono gave Anders... well, it was a smile, really. He was finally starting to come to accept that one didn't need a mouth for that.

//Of course, mate,// he replied, giving a little nod. //Have you given any thought to how you want to test yourself? We can program bloody near anything into this room. Make it so it can take a beating without putting you through one in turn.//

Jono had smiling with his eyes down to an art, and Anders returned the gesture with a grim little smile of his own.

"A dozen Leland Gaunts, I think," he said. "But give them an offensive power. It's not as much fun to throw fireballs at mind control."

Anders was still angry about the whole thing, yes.

//Good choice,// Jono decided, nodding approvingly. //And an offensive power, hm?//

It would be bad of him to rip off that show with the environmental hero and the elemental teenagers, right?

Well, try to stop him.

//How about earth, fire, wind, and water?//

Nobody took heart seriously.

"Sounds fun," Anders decided -- fun and also familiar, since it was close to the power set most mages had at home. "Let's get started."

//Excellent.// Jono nodded toward the room area that had been cordoned off, leading Anders into a city street that looked... mostly like a generic middle-American suburb nowhere on the island, admittedly. But it wasn't really the setting that mattered, here. Jono started poking at a console that more or less blended in with the rest of the environment. //They'll come from all directions, if that works for you. Last chance to tell me otherwise, mate.//

If she's about, today!

He's coping by flinging himself into everything he possibly can hands-on. She's coping by sitting over there with a dog. Together, they... would fight crime, maybe, if they got bored enough or something. Who knows.

Jono's here, and planning on sticking around for a while after class if anybody needs anything they didn't cover during the lecture or with all of the punching. He's accommodating like that.

Someone is wanting to check in on you and your lack of man-boobs, dude.

... Well, he didn't have any!

What he did have, fortunately, was a phone that could pick up on his telepathy.

//Er... Dinah?//

"Hey, bubble. What's the trouble?" Dinah grinned a little, then added, "I got one of those weird phone messages from you on Wednesday. You sounded kind of down. Ish."

//Oh, yes. Ish.// Jono shrugged his shoulders. Not that Dinah could see. //March was... Tiring? I'm doing better now, though.//

In that he was no longer mostly dead. That helped.
