How you felt about the situation of the young girl, your opinion on the animation, whatever you wish. It's topical, at least.//

He shrugged his shoulders, and then slid a Y-People VHS into an old VCR, because that was just how the 90s rolled, okay?

It's your classic story of "Young woman gets powers, young woman gets chased away from home, young woman gets taken in by someone, young woman gets taken advantage of and develops MORE powers, and then young woman gets taken in by someone marginally better, for real."

Pleeeease meta the hell out of this and the characters that are shown.

Raven put her head down on her desk while she watched, something about the show making her uncomfortable.

Probably the crappy animation and writing. That had to be it.

Raven sighed. "I can see why it could be," she said. "But some of the characters are so irritating."

Normally, Kathy would be thrilled to get a chance to watch the old Y-People show. It had aired before she was born, but she was a huge fan of the comics now and had a lot of--could it be called nostalgia if it was for something that she hadn't ever experienced?

But watching the beginning of that, where the girl's father stood over her and denied their relationship--yeah, Kathy could imagine her own father there all too easily. You're a disgrace. I'm ashamed to be seen with you. You ain't my daughter. Not anymore.

Would that be what happened if he ever found out about what she could do as Banzai? It's not like she hadn't heard half of that for smaller infractions anyway.

Yeah, she was just going to be sinking into her seat while she watched. Ugh.

Yeah, the whole episode isn't long enough to take up the entire class period, so now it's discussion time. How did it make you feel? Can you relate? Did you think it was realistic or unreasonable somehow? What would you do if you were in that girl's shoes?

"It seemed a little one-sided," Raven said. "We don't really get any idea of her mom's motivations at all. And how's she supposed to know what's wrong with that poor girl if she doesn't tell her? I think the girl's just looking for someone to kiss it and make it all better, instead of dealing with things herself."

Also, that bald guy was creepy. What was up with his eyebrows?

Celia was here, but grateful for the excuse to daydream, today. Her thoughts weren't her own as it was, and while she'd come to a sort of acceptance with that, it still was a relief to not have to focus on anything today.

It had been two weeks now and Kathy had put this off more than long enough. "Umm, Mr. Starsmore?" she asked, looking nervous and uncomfortable. "Do you have a few moments to talk?"

Hey, she was nervous and uncomfortable. Which clearly meant that he was going to have to be as reassuring as possible. That would make her feel better, right?

Or worse. It could definitely make her feel entirely worse.

Because honestly, what was she supposed to say? Forgive her? Don't be too mad? Don't kick her out of class or deliberately fail her?

Yeah, none of those would work.

So, instead she just clasped her hands in front of her chest and bowed. She didn't bow as deeply as she otherwise would, but only because she wasn't sure if that would make Mr. Starsmore more uncomfortable.

"I--I owe you a very, very deep apology," she said softly. "Only made worse by how long it took me to deliver it. I--I--I'm the one..." Ugh, why was this so hard to say?!

Oh. Right. Because she was telling someone she respected that she had stolen one of his most treasured possessions. That would do it.

She should have straightened up by now, but at least this way? She didn't have to see his expression when she confessed. Didn't have to see his disappointment and anger.

"I so very, very sorry!" she said. "I took it and I had no right and I'm sorry!"

It was probably fortunate that Jono wasn't so great at getting angry at people when they were busy, you know, groveling. But the disappointment was loud and clear, even if she wasn't going to look up.

The trouble with telepaths.

I was going to show you guys the old X-Men cartoon at some point this semester if I could get away with it anyway. The fact that I chose that particular clip, however...

Look, Rogue's voice actor kissed my cheek on Wednesday and has been fighting like a wildcat with the Nova Scotian government from the inside in order to save our jobs. IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN ON MY MIND.
