Sociology of Violence: 2nd Period

Grissom has set up several stations in the A/V lab. Yup, it's video game day. As long as it isn't something that canon-punctures like Final Fantasy, and it's violent, it's here. *handwave* Duck Hunt to Grand Theft Auto.

"I realized I wanted to discuss media with gang imagery, like many video games, in class, and then I realized that perhaps some of you had never been exposed to them before, or actually played a violent video game."

"So for this class, play in groups or by yourself, and I'd like you to write a short essay over the weekend on what your reactions were to the games."

Sociology of the Paranormal: 6th Period

"I hope you enjoyed your research on time travel. Today, you're going to complete an in-class assignment for me. I'd like you to write me a fictional essay, or drabble story if you will, in which you time travel.

You won't be graded on your writing skills, this isn't an English class, but by demonstrating you have read the materials and put some though and effort into your attempt.

I have a handout to assist you."

[OOC: Change of plans due to my RL slamming me, and I'm missing needed information from a handful of you to proceed. Next week!]

Bel started playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, sad that he didn't have Angelus to beat this time around.

Peter signed in, then went straight to Doom II. It was a classic.

He made use of idgod and idchoppers because nothing says "violence" like being invincible while chainsawing a bunch of demons on Mars.

Mac signed in.

At the end of the lesson she hands in her essay where she travels ten years into the future. Oh, the shiny technology to drool over.

Jake is here. At the end of class, he turns in an essay where the theme is that he thinks timetravel is useless as anything other than an athropological exercise, since if you change the past you are making a new future, that is, a new alternate timeline. It gets very complicated and circular, but Jake seems very firm.

Lana signed in and quietly turned in her essay at the end of class.

She stood quietly in a doorway across the street from what would be, in another 13 years, The Talon. Nobody really paid any attention to her, aside from the occasional odd glance a stranger in a small town receives. She didn't notice anyway. Her attention was on the flower shop. And on the young couple with the little girl dressed up as a fairy princess - complete with magic wand.

She watched as they hugged and kissed the little one - the father tossing her up in the air to make her squeal with laughter, the mother snuggling her close and allowing herself to be bopped with the magic wand. She couldn't take her eyes off of them, drank them in, wanted to somehow make the moment last forever.

The other woman outside the shop with them grinned easily, hands-on-hips, watching the family's protracted goodbyes. In the end she distracted the fairy princess with promises of a beautiful purple orchid, freeing the parents to head off to the homecoming game. The little one wriggled away from her aunt's grasp to wave at them from the window until they were out of sight.

She watched too, whispering her own last goodbyes.

Cordelia signs in, and at the end of the class, hands in a story about a girl named Carmen who had lost her lover in a tragic accident. She was so filled with grief that her friend, who was secretly a witch (but no one knew), cast a spell to make Carmen travel back in time so she could try to change the outcome of her lover's future. But the witch wasn't perfect, so she accidentally sent Carmen forward in time with no hope of fixing the past, and now with no history from the years that she had lost.

Bel turns in a story about a demon who went back in time to stop a line of witches from being born, but Phoebe the witch went back in time as well and stopped him, and he was so overcome by her beauty he didn't care.

Shep signs in and then pulls out his lap top.

At the end of class he emails in a quick story of how he ended up back in the Asian theater of the second World War and how he ended up in a plane, dogfighting the evil vilians and saving the world. Or at least his squadron.

Angela turned in an essay in which she imagines a girl going back in time a few weeks and talking her friends out of doing several stupid things that will only come back and hurt people. In the essay, the girl yells and screams and the people listen.

When she's done, she slumps with her head resting on the desk, eyes closed

Piper signs in. She turns in a story about a witch who tries to go back in time to prevent her sister from making a huge mistake. Because of a botched spell, though, she ends up in the future where she learns that her sister is actually married to the Source of All Evil. That would never really happen, though. Not at all.

Rose signs in and starts to work on her essay.

She couldn't have an easier assignment after her adventures with the Doctor. She writes of the time she traveled back to World War II during the Blitz and met Captain Jack. At the end of the class, she turns in her essay with a nostalgic smile.

Sam of course figures that this might back fire on him, but what the hell.

He sits down and writes about a Physicist who figures out a way to travel through time in his own lifetime. He enters a chamber and vanishes. He awakes someplace in the past with a reflection that is not his own. He is then contacted by a hologram from the future that only he can see and together they fight crime figure out a way for Sam the hero to leap from one person to another, setting right what once went wrong.

He then erases some words and deliberately misspells so it seems more like something Marty would write.

Walter signs in and turns in the following essay.

Sixty two years ago, I packed my bags, said goodbye to my home and somehow ended up here. Things are so different here, I cannot tell what is from the time difference, and what is unique to Fandom. Things have not changed as much as cinema might have made me think, but after meeting some people here, I suppose that's just because the changes are just coming a little more slowly than moviemakers guessed.

I find myself confused, though. What I learn now about the "past" - my present, makes me wonder how I can go back to it, and how what I learn now will affect what I do then.

Phoebe hands in a story about a witch who was getting attacked in her dreams so she wondered if it had something to do with a past life. She wrote a spell to switch souls with her past self to stop whatever was happening and almost killed her family in the present.

Phoebe laughs and shakes her head. "Yeah, like something like that could ever happen."

Jaye signs in, and at the end of class turns in an essay about a guy who breaks his toaster and tries to fix it himself, only to set up some sort of weird time travel dealie where every time he goes to toast something, he ends up back in time and comes back to a different reality of his own world. And since The Simpsons doesn't exist here, it's not plagiarism!

Lyta signed in. At the end of the class, as others are filing out, she glanced over her story once again.

...In the instant that she grabbed my hand, I understood.

Valen, the Minbari not born of Minbari, had been human. Transformed by the very same device that would transform his daughter, he became the greatest of them all, a name that was revered throughout Minbari history. But he would begin his journey as Jeffrey Sinclair, EarthForce Captain....

With a sigh, she folded the pieces of paper together, and placed them on the stack.

[Sooo need to go back and watch episodes...]

Broots signed in. His short story was about a young computer hacker who accidentally creates a time portal and wounds up back in the middle ages. He's about to be killed as a witch but he calculates that there should be a solar elipse soon. He convinces the crowd that he is in fact a great sorcerer and he becomes and advisor to the kind.

Stark turns in an essay involving wormholes, because it's always about wormholes. Everything is about the frelling wormholes...

In the story, which looks nothing like any Farscape episodes involving time travel especially not any episodes named "Kansas" only with Stark added in a crew of escaped prisoners and one crazy astronaut going to Earth through a wormhole, only they end up there 15 years or so in the past and wacky hijinks ensue.
