Journalistic Integrity (Wednesday, February 8 - 6th period)

"All right. We've talked a lot about lines, and when to cross them," Rita said thoughtfully. "Who determines those lines? Is it always the subject? And what if the subject of the investigation isn't a person, or has no way of communicating their aversion to being profiled?"

She strolled around to sit on her desk. "Where does the reporter draw the line, really?"

"Well, first I'd wonder why said reporter felt the need to investigate an inanimate object," Callisto said. "By the way, why did Wilbur run off with the kids?"

Rita buried her face in her hands and began to sob forlornly.

"There, there, Professor," Callisto said ~~mockingly~~ comfortingly. "I'm sure eventually he'll understand that just because you had one torrid fling with that co-worker it doesn't mean you love him any less."

"But bonds of trust are never repaired as strongly as they once were," Krycek put in, looking sympathetic. "You'll have to work for his love to be returned to you."

"In the meantime, I can take solace in watching the love lives of others."

She looked up long enough to look conspiratorially at her TAs.

"Now, now, Rita, that's no way to talk," Callisto ignored the conspiratorial look. "You have to be proactive, you never know, Wilbur might be into threesomes."

Krycek ignored it as well, nodding. "You show you care when you put yourself out there, on the line. And maybe your children would benefit from the addition of a stable adult to the family?"

"I think you two shall be doing some filing this weekend," Rita said, scowling.

"Now, really, there's no need to take out your frustrations at being seperated from both Wilbur and your lover on us."

"Yes, filing. And making copies. By hand. With a quill."

"Goose, eagle or swan?"

Krycek makes a face, but goes along with it. Can't be that difficult to learn a quill, can it?

"Peacock."

"Never used peacock before, too flashy for my tastes."

Janet smiled. Innocently. So very innocently. "I have to wonder if the investigator doesn't know about the boundaries in some instances?" she asked. Again, innocently. "Like, say, some very curious students who might be fascinated by a famous journalist coming to teach at their school who want to learn about her? But they've never been told not to investigate her background. So how would they know they were crossing any kind of boundary?" Janet looked very eager to learn. "They might have wanted to learn more about the hypothetical famous journalist because they wanted to use her as a role model."

"Possibly it would have been better to voice this desire and make their intentions known, rather than pry into the life of the famous journalist," Rita replied.

"But I'm sure their intentions were for the best," said Janet. "I mean, last semester we had a homicidal vampire hired on as a teacher. At least they only dug up a husband and children."

"Uh, hypothetically," she added.

"Uh huh. I would humbly suggest that certain people hush, or else they might find themselves in detention," Rita said. Patience? Kind of gone.

"I was just trying to help," said Janet ~~not so~~ innocently. She really hadn't been. "You know, maybe to clear things up. John was really worried that you'd think less of him." He really hadn't been. "And, you know, he was pretty worried about the effects of the extra stress in your life on your children. I mean, he'd be so upset if they were affected."

"Detention on Saturday, Ms. Fraiser," Rita said, rubbing the bridge of her nose.

"Why am I not surprised?" muttered Janet. "I'm going to kill John." Not that she really was. But still, it was kind of fun to plot his horrible demise.

"If the subject of the investigation can't communicate their aversion to being profiled, then how can the reporter really know that there's a problem? Most of us aren't mind readers. And in this day and age, if they can't communicate with the reporter, there's a good chance they won't even see what's being written about them, so there's shouldn't be a problem at all."

Chloe does her best to look innocent and sweet, not wanting to be turned into any sort of creature.

Alanna was really, really confused. Also, not quite sure what she was doing in the class. And her classmates where adding to that confusion.
