Journalistic Integrity (Wednesday, February 8 - 6th period)

"All right. We've talked a lot about lines, and when to cross them," Rita said thoughtfully. "Who determines those lines? Is it always the subject? And what if the subject of the investigation isn't a person, or has no way of communicating their aversion to being profiled?"

She strolled around to sit on her desk. "Where does the reporter draw the line, really?"

Janet smiled. Innocently. So very innocently. "I have to wonder if the investigator doesn't know about the boundaries in some instances?" she asked. Again, innocently. "Like, say, some very curious students who might be fascinated by a famous journalist coming to teach at their school who want to learn about her? But they've never been told not to investigate her background. So how would they know they were crossing any kind of boundary?" Janet looked very eager to learn. "They might have wanted to learn more about the hypothetical famous journalist because they wanted to use her as a role model."

"But I'm sure their intentions were for the best," said Janet. "I mean, last semester we had a homicidal vampire hired on as a teacher. At least they only dug up a husband and children."

"Uh, hypothetically," she added.

"I was just trying to help," said Janet not so innocently. She really hadn't been. "You know, maybe to clear things up. John was really worried that you'd think less of him." He really hadn't been. "And, you know, he was pretty worried about the effects of the extra stress in your life on your children. I mean, he'd be so upset if they were affected."

"Why am I not surprised?" muttered Janet. "I'm going to kill John." Not that she really was. But still, it was kind of fun to plot his horrible demise.
