[OOC: Light day today because I have an insane idea for Thursday's class that has been brewing for WEEKS and I can't focus on anything good for today's class. Let's just take this as a day of transition. Class Info Post.]

*The Teacher of the Month The Tick is at the podium as usual. It may be surprising to anyone not at Sunday's memorial service that Lockheed is in the room, occupying the shelf that he had frequently napped on in the past.*

Today's going to be a light day, class. What with everything going on, between the projects and... other things, I thought today would be a good day to open the floor to any questions you might have about Justice, our class in general, where we're going, who we are, or what we're all doing here in class or on Earth!

Upon entering the Danger Room Shop, The classroom finds it transformed into a metal scrap yard.

Mac sits on the remains of a car seat tossing a medium size pumpkin in the air.

"Now that we got the emitters back in order, it's time to put some of your fabrication skills to work. Today I want you to start work on an apparatus that will fling a pumpkin. It can be a catapult, trebuchet, cannon, giant slingshot... whatever you want."

Mac motions to the scrap yard around him.

"Only catch is? You can use the parts you found from the junkyard behind me. You have full use of the shop tools to build whatever it is you plan to build. You have class today to plan and build. On Thursday we'll test out your new creations."

I'll be grading your project on:
Originality
Use of materials
Accuracy
Distance

"We have open shop this afternoon, and I'll have open shop tomorrow for those who want to use that time to work on their project. If you guys want to do this in groups or on your own, it's up to you."

"Thursday morning? We make a mess."

((I'll be modding the results of the pumpkin fling on Thursday based on how you build your "flinger". The more detail? The better your results.))

Good morning. Please don't forget the sign the roll sheet and remind any classmates electing not to attend that I will be giving out detentions for such. It's getting ridiculous.

Today, we will be discussing amino acid metabolism.

All tissues have some capability for synthesis of the non-essential amino acids, amino acid remodeling, and conversion of non-amino acid carbon skeletons into amino acids and other derivatives that contain nitrogen. However, the liver is the major site of nitrogen metabolism in the body. In times of dietary surplus, the potentially toxic nitrogen of amino acids is eliminated via transaminations, deamination, and urea formation; the carbon skeletons are generally conserved as carbohydrate, via gluconeogenesis, or as fatty acid via fatty acid synthesis pathways.

In this respect amino acids fall into three categories: glucogenic, ketogenic, or glucogenic and ketogenic. Glucogenic amino acids are those that give rise to a net production of pyruvate or TCA cycle intermediates, such as a-ketoglutarate or oxaloacetate, all of which are precursors to glucose via gluconeogenesis. All amino acids except lysine and leucine are at least partly glucogenic. Lysine and leucine are the only amino acids that are solely ketogenic, giving rise only to acetylCoA or acetoacetylCoA, neither of which can bring about net glucose production.

A small group of amino acids comprised of isoleucine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and tyrosine give rise to both glucose and fatty acid precursors and are thus characterized as being glucogenic and ketogenic. Finally, it should be recognized that amino acids have a third possible fate. During times of starvation the reduced carbon skeleton is used for energy production, with the result that it is oxidized to CO2 and H2O.

For today's lab, I would like you to determine why certain amino acids are essential and others are considered non-essential.

Hello.

Today is a test day for Languages of Europe and Cat students alike. Both tests will consist of a short vocabulary portion, a translation, and a five-minute dialogue with me in the appropriate tongue. For Languages of Europe, that means Spanish; for Cat, the translation will be based on the video now cued up in the VCR.

Please let me know if you have questions.

[OOC: Slowplay on this. Post that you handed in the written test and how well you did and that you're approaching Dream for the dialogue. I know a tiny bit of Spanish and Babelfish is my friend, so if you want to actually hold the conversation in Spanish, I can do that, though there's no penalty if you just choose to use the //slashes of speaking another language//. Finally -- anyone who does not complete a midterm dialogue within the next week will be given detention.]

Das Schnitzel came out into the cafeteria alone again. She had crossed the border of annoyed and was heading straight into "God, Are You Really This Stupid" town with the Chef. She did stop by the study hall room last night to throw a blanket on him while he was asleep. She would have woke him up but...oh, he was so cute laying under that table having little Swedish dreams.

"Once again the suggestion box is here for any of your, you know...suggestions. Any funny business and I will track you down to smack you over the head myself."

"And as per request we now have otters blood for any of you daytime fearing folk. When I was a hit chicken for the Mafia I would have been able to get human blood...but those days are long past." she stops for a minute and looks like she's reminiscing.

"My friend Mr. Bawkbegawk has made lunch for you today so you won't have to have breakfast food two days in a row. Though I know some of you toast loving weirdos wouldn't mind that."

Spider has a mug of coffee and a slightly more cheerful look on his face. He's seated again on the top of his desk and sharing his cigarettes with his cat. Swinging his heels, he addresses the class. "Grading's almost finished, up to and including the midterm, and I'd have to say that I'm impressed. Well, with those of you who are still with us, anyway. Attendance has been above and beyond the call of duty and participation has been very, very high. Grades, credit and attendance reports will be available by Friday for the curious."

Taking a swig of coffee, he gave his students an evil grin. "Which means that the final project for the term is going to be a doozy. I'll be giving you over a month to put together the article that I'm asking for, however, and I'm in final negotations with a few people before actually assigning it, however. I am very, very pleased with the amount of class participation."

There was a pause as he waved the cat away from his coffee before she got cigarette ashes in it. "Today I have an ethical question related to yesterday's discussion on slant - specifically the remarks concerning the journalist who seemed to draw from only one source and leave a great deal of detail to one side. Some of this is due to editing for space, some of it is sloppiness. When you have only a very specific number of column inches in which to tell your entire story... what do you cut first?"

[The faint sounds of Snow Patrol can be heard coming from Ten's office this morning. He is bored and restless, there is a strange sense in the air, and his spinny chair is only distracting for so long. But this can all be ignored because he is cheerful. And he has coffee.]

In addition to the flight simulator, Anakin has managed to squeeze a couple dozen chairs and a movie screen into the shed.

His eyes are tired and slightly haunted as he turned to speak to the club members. "Tonight the sim has been reprogrammed back to the original Jedi Starfighter. You can see if your skills on the other sims in recent weeks have helped you with the first ship we learned on. In addition to the straight flight sequence, there is also a combat sequence available if you wish to try it."

He gestured at the movie screen. "In addition, inspired by last week's sim work of an Earth-based ship, I've rented the movie Top Gun from NPC Video Store in town. Some of the flying is pretty impressive and the volleyball sequence isn't half-bad, either."

Hello, class. Please, grab a snickerdoodle 98% human flesh free and have a seat.

We are starting a new project today!

I have made you each an egg baby.

J-Pop Egg Babies Aren't Weird, Right? )

For the next few days, you must have your egg baby with you at all times. Even when you sleep, you must put him or her in a safe place.

By Thursday, your objectives are to:
- Write a few sentences on what caring for even an inanimate object 24 hours a day was like. What obstacles did you face? Were you surprised by your reactions?
- Provide for your baby. You should assemble, in one way or another, things to care for your baby with. Something safe to carry it in, something to keep it warm, etc.
- Have one person babysit for your baby for at least one hour.
- DO NOT BREAK YOUR BABY

Today in class, you should:
- Name your baby
- Keep your baby away from the class psycho kitties
- Start caring for your baby

If you have any questions, please ask now! Thank you.

"All right, class, today we'll be NaNoing like mad continuing our discussion of the role of women in Arthurian legends," Camulus begins without preamble. "We were talking about the segregation of the sexes in the City of Legions and how the chivalric code was tied to this." He grins. "Today we will be talking about how women are, in short, the reason for all the evil in this world. Not that I, myself, have anything against women. I happen to be an equal opportunity overlord. However, in Arthur's world women were the clue that held society together and functioning. More specifically, it was the virtue, chastity, and self-control of women that kept society functioning. You can imagine what happened when the women gave into their, ah, animal desires.

"I suppose this needs some explaining. Arthur's queen was Guinevere, who was the pinnacle of women in the City of Legions. Arthur also had a knight named Launcelot. Let's just say that Barbossa would be reporting with glee what these two got up to behind Arthur's back. Of course, Arthur found out and Launcelot was banished. Some stories say that Guinevere was burned at the stake for her adultery, but that is a very recent addition to the legend that isn't in any of the materials we work with. After Launcelot was gone, Arthur also had to leave, as he was called away by the Pope, who I believe is the First Prime of the Christian God. While he was on his way to see this man, his nephew seized power for himself. But more importantly, he seized Guinevere. Adultery number two on her part. She escaped Mordred and became a nun, but the important thing is that it is the so-called Rape of Guinevere that causes Arthur to come stampeding back to his death. Guinevere is also the reason that Launcelot and a good number of Arthur's knights are unable to aid him in this final battle, in which he dies.

"The begetting of Mordred himself is the sin of woman, as well. Mordred was not only Arthur's nephew, he was his son by Morgan le Fay. Morgan made sure the whole court knew about this relationship, as well. Morgan's bitterness was supposedly caused by being cast out of the court following an affair with Merlin, Arthur's chief advisor, who was also a wizard or a druid.

"Why then do we care? Because all this came to a head in the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which we will be looking at next." He frowns down at the books stacked on his desk. "I couldn't find a suitable modern translation for you to read, but I can get one. I'll leave it in the classroom and you can pick it up sometime before next class."

He looks up at the class. "No homework, but I do have a question - what is the connection between the Holy Grail and Guinevere?"

[[So true about lack of Gawain online. I'll still be looking, but it may be in the form of scans of one of my books. Seperate post to follow.]]

"Good morning, class. Today, we're going to look at the early Roman social institutions...

The Roman Family

The smallest group of Roman society was the family, which the early Romans regarded as the most important and sacred of all human institutions. At its head was the household father (paterfamilias). He was supreme ruler over all the members of the household; his power extended to life and death. He had charge of the family worship and performed the religious rites about the sacred fire, which was kept burning upon the family altar. Around the family hearth were gathered the sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, and also, the adopted children,—all of whom remained under the power of the father as long as he lived. The family might also have dependent members, called “clients,” who looked up to the father as their “patron”; and also slaves, who served the father as their master. Every Roman looked with pride upon his family and the deeds of his ancestors; and it was regarded as a great calamity for the family worship to become extinct.

The Roman Gens.

A number of families which were supposed to be descended from a common ancestor formed a clan, or gens. Like the family, the gens was bound together by common religious rites. It was also governed by a common chief or ruler (decurio), who performed the religious rites, and led the people in war.

The Roman Curia

A number of gentes formed a still larger group, called a curia. In ancient times, when different people wished to unite, it was customary for them to make the union sacred by worshiping some common god. So the curia was bound together by the worship of a common deity. To preside over the common worship, a chief (curio) was selected, who was also the military commander in time of war, and chief magistrate in time of peace. The chief was assisted by a council of elders; and upon the most important questions he consulted the members of the curia in a common place of meeting (comitium). So that the curia was a small confederation of gentes, and made what we might call a little state.

The Roman Tribes

There was in the early Roman society a still larger group than the curia; it was what was called the tribe. It was a collection of curiae which had united for purposes of common defense and had come to form quite a distinct and well-organized community, like that which had settled upon the Palatine hill, and also like the Sabine community which had settled upon the Quirinal. Each of these settlements was therefore a tribe. Each had its chief, or king (rex), who was priest of the common religion, military commander in time of war, and civil magistrate to settle all disputes. Like the curia, it had also a council of elders and a general assembly of all people capable of bearing arms. Three of such tribes formed the whole Roman people.

Next lesson, we'll be looking at the early Roman government, so I'd like you all to do some reading . You'll find the library well equipped.

See you on Thursday."

Population demographics -

The world population - the total number of humans alive on the planet Earth at a given time. According to estimates published by the world population in June 2005 was ~6,450,000,000. This figure continues to grow at rates that are unprecedented prior to the 20th century. Approximately one fifth of all humans in the last six thousand years are currently alive.

Demographics is a shorthand term for 'population characteristics'. Demographics include age, income, mobility, educational attainment, home ownership, employment status, and even location. Distributions of values within a demographic variable, and across households, are both of interest, as well as trends over time.

Okay all you carbon based life forms, it's time to turn in some projects! Don't all stumble in at once. Remember, you owe an essay along with the presentation. Flair it up cats, flair it up!

Bonus points if your outfit looks comfortable enough to sleep in.
Double bonus if it's not made for sleep.
