[OOC: Test scores have been handed back. I'm considering this to be, unofficially, a new quarter. This would be the best time to join or drop the class because there won't be another test for over a month. Also, the topics are going to get a little weird. By which I mean "More full of crack." Look below for proof. Class Info Link.]

Hello, class! Most of you did just fine on the test, even if all but one of you neglected the word "metaphor" in the extra credit.

Today's class will be a little different from previous classes. For the next couple weeks, we'll be discussing real world questions of Justice. When is it Just? When is it Too Far? Or, today's topic, Is this serial killing?

*Tick passes out various newspaper pages. They are all from different dates. They are all from the obituaties. They all feature one specific name. They are all from a small town in Colorado.*

"Bad" Ash stands, thankfully fully clothed and wearing a cup in anticipation of Callisto's reaction to his plans. He is grinning, holding his clipboard, as he surveys the semi-circle easels and paints, and the small dais in the center of the semi-circle.

He had written on the board: "Today we'll be painting the classical nude. Callisto will be modeling for the class." He had done an anticipatory little jig. Then added "Please Paint Callisto's Head on a naked body. An example of a naked body is now on the wall".

EDIT 2: Now, it is all erased and there is simply "Won't some baby please pose nude for the class?" with a Sad Face afterwards.

Dream looks almost tired today. He is gripping a large mug of coffee and taking occasional small sips. He still doesn't have much use for mortal food, but he can see why all of the other teachers love this stuff so.

Hello.

Languages of Europe students: While I am impressed with your grasps of Spanish vocabulary, we have neglected grammar thus far. Today, we are going to work on verb conjugation. There are a few simple rules, but, of course, many verbs are irregular. Here are some guidelines that will help you determine which is which...

Dream continues talking on this topic for the rest of the class period.

Cat students: No transformation today. Instead, we will watch this documentary about lions. Observe and write a paragraph on what they are saying to each other, and to the filmmakers.

Also, I would like to begin introducing you to actual cats. If you know of one on campus, let me know so that I may issue it an invitation.

*When the students enter the classroom, they are greeted by a smiling teacher.*

I was very pleased with your conduct during our field trip. As a result of that and the fact that I have to be in court tomorrow and the rest of the week, I am cancelling today's class.

Those of you who elected to do papers have until next Tuesday to turn them in. Please sign the roll sheet and you may leave.

Methos is buried somewhere in the stacks. A sign on the collections desk reads, "Students are reminded that they will be fed to Locker 327 if they bring food into the library. Yes, the librarian is exempt from that. No, it's not fair. Get over it."

If you need to check out a book, hope that one of the assistants is around -- or risk your life by yelling for the librarian in the library.

Spider is sitting at his desk, head in his hands as the cat chases small amphibians happily through the class room. On the screen behind him is the following announcement.

Today's class is to be devoted to working on our project for Parents Weekend. As Beka Valentine was the only one to come up with a suggestion* we'll go with her idea. If we can get a rough idea of what needs to be done and assign responsibilities during this class period, we'll be doing well.

If there's anyone left without partners for the homework or in a group of less than three, please consult with the professor. Please wait until after he finishes his third drink, however.

Edit: Are we doing a project for Parent's Weekend? Because it looks to me like y'all are working on your homework which isn't the same thing. Could I get a class consensus, please?

* That the player saw, anyway. I don't want to take time from your homework, so let's try to square it away this class period if possible. The player has a medical appointment and won't be back till the afternoon. I will check the thread as soon as I get back.

Grissom is in the Sociology lab, looking rather chipper and foxy in his sexy, sexy hat. He is munching on his gift from Sara, and would love to share some tasty bug candy with any one who stops by. Except for the slugs. Those are his favorite.

He has put up a display for his students stopping by.
Handouts and Materials on Forensic Serology (Blood Analysis)

If you need to make up work, now would be a great time, as he is in a good mood and will probably let you get away with bloody murder.

Dean Bristow's Professor Jerusalem's Office Hours.

The Professor has made himself at home in the small office with his name on it that he has not, to date, been seen in so much as once. He has his laptop open and is typing furiously, but the sign on the door reads 'Office Hours, the Professor is IN'.
[identity profile] jerusalem-s.livejournal.com
There's a crackle from the PA and a round of muttered cursing.

"Right. This is Spider Jerusalem, your acting Dean of Students for the next few days, and here are your announcements for today. Firstly, locker 327 appears to have eaten several students. While apparently improving the remaining gene pool for the rest of us, it's still something we're going to have to explain to your parents and guardians, so please think of the Principal and stay the hell away from it. Also," there is a pause while something suspiciously like a 'ribbit' is heard in the background and more muffled cursing, "please be aware that Rory Gilmore is looking for information concerning the adults visiting for the somewhat broadly named 'Parent's Weekend'. Please contact her with whatever information you have."

There is a squeal of feedback and another round of cursing and 'ribbits' before he continues. "There's apparently a Halloween Bash down in the town on October 29, and the latest information apparently indicates a costume contest with prizes. That's all. Have a nice day."

Here is the Hall.

Study in it if you wish.

With that, Dream plops himself into a chair and pulls out a notebook, in which he begins to write. He's there if students need him, but no one could describe him as overly attentive.

Anakin stands in front of a door to a new shed located just outside of the gym. Inside is a gleamingly new flight simulator, currently programmed for a series of simulations for a Jedi Starfighter.

He turned and addressed the crowd.

"Okay. We have about twenty people signed up for the Flight Club right now, which is great. I've decided that in order to give everyone a chance for some hands-on experience, we'll have both a flight sim and a practical demonstration available every week." He gestured into the shed. "My old teacher has sent us a flight simulator. It's capable of almost unlimited variations in programming. Currently I've set it for the ship I'm most familiar with, the Jedi Starfighter, but if you can get a flight sim of the craft from your home world or dimension, we can upload it as well and learn to fly your ships." He grinned. "I'd rather us crash and burn in the sim than in the real thing. Less paperwork."

He smiled at Harry, Kiki, and Draco. "Today's practical demonstration will be with broomsticks. Draco, Harry, and Kiki have graciously agreed to show us all how to fly on these."

Anakin held up his hand. "One more thing. If you can all sign the sheet and mention your flight experience, especially if you're licensed on your world for your craft of choice, it'll go a long way towards making the insurance people who cover the school happier.

"That's it. Have fun. Don't break my sim. Or yourselves."

[OOC: Feel free to slowplay this--Anakin'll answer all flight sim requests and our three broom instructors are in three different time zones.]

"Good morning. Today we're going to be talking about pre-Roman Italy, just to give you some idea on the background.

Now, before Rome, Italy was not a nation. Instead of was a series of competing city states and tribes with close ethnic and cultural links. We have both archaeological and historical evidence... historical being written, as later Greek and Roman authors have descrbed this period. However, it is important to remember that those accounts were ethno-centric, and we will see through Greek and Roman eyes.

Across Italy, there was major changes, associated with the transition to the Early Iron Age cica 900BC. There was demographic growth, agricultural intensification and new metalworkins techniques being put into place. With it, was an emergence of regional diversity"

Now, can anyone tell me the names of any of these city states?"

*someone comes up with an answer*

"Yes, the Etruscans. Thank you."

*writes it on the board*

"The origins of the Etruscans were found at a place called Villanovan. What evidence we have is heavily skewed towards funeracy evidence, and we know that they had a distinctive funerary ritual, such as an urn or an upturned bowl in shaft. Their settlements were small villages, which coalesce into nucleated cities, for example, Veii.

They first had cultural contact with southern Italy, Greece and the Near East from the 8th Century, which led to orientalizing. They first import, and then manufacture imitations of, Greek pottery. Their trading also led to Greek ideas about political and military organization and religion being absorbed by the Etruscans. They worshipped a number of Greek and Phoenician gods. However, despite the trade of ideas, their architecture remained distintively Italian

Their wealth and trading contacts were based on mineral wealth, which would have been metals. Thi led to the emergence of dominant aristocratic groups and a monarchy. They expressed their status through burial, rural palaces and later sanctuaries."

*looks at the clock*

"Okay, guess we'll be continuing this next lesson. Homwork... I want a page on the Etruscan's language, or at least, what we know about it.

Any questions, come and see me at the end."

Linguistics

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005 04:05 pm
[identity profile] the-ascended.livejournal.com
"Good afternoon.

I've decided that we're going to look at the Rosetta Stone today. How many of you know what that is?

For those of you who don't, the Rosetta Stone is a stone with writing on it in two languages (Egyptian and Greek), using three scripts (hieroglyphic, demotic and Greek).

The Rosetta Stone is written in three scripts because when it was written, there were three scripts being used in Egypt.

The first was hieroglyphic which was the script used for important or religious documents. Anyone give me an example there?

The second was demotic which was the common script of Egypt.

The third was Greek which was the language of the rulers of Egypt at that time.

The Rosetta Stone was written in all three scripts so that the priests, government officials and rulers of Egypt could read what it said.

It was carved in 196BC, and was dicovered by French soldiers in 1799, whilst they rebuilding a fort in small village in the Delta called Rosetta, or Rashid. Hence, the name, Rosetta stone.
The Rosetta Stone was found in a small village in the Delta called Rosetta (Rashid).

The Rosetta Stone is a text written by a group of priests in Egypt to honour the Egyptian pharaoh. It lists all of the things that the pharaoh has done that are good for the priests and the people of Egypt.

Many people worked on deciphering hieroglyphs over several hundred years. However, the structure of the script was very difficult to work out. After many years of studying the Rosetta Stone and other examples of ancient Egyptian writing, Jean-François Champollion deciphered hieroglyphs in 1822. Champollion could read both Greek and coptic.

He was able to figure out what the seven demotic signs in coptic were. By looking at how these signs were used in coptic he was able to work out what they stood for. Then he began tracing these demotic signs back to hieroglyphic signs.

By working out what some hieroglyphs stood for, he could make educated guesses about what the other hieroglyphs stood for.

This is an example of applied linguistics

Now, for homework, I want you to either write me a two pages on other examples of applying linguistics, or, I want you to try and apply your own lingustic skills to something; whether they are skills you already had before starting this class, or have learnt so far.

I'm here if you need me."

Welcome to class everyone.

I hope you have completed your wigs, do share them with your classmates.

Today we will be coming close to finishing up the units for costume making for Halloween. We will be making masks. All the supplies you need are here, enjoy!

My classes are cancelled for the rest of this week. I apologize, however courts do not care whether or not one has to teach.

Geology students, I have given your assignment.

Biology students, I forgot to mention that I would like those of you who went on the field trip to write a brief report. Please do so. Those of you who elected to do the paper need to turn that in next Tuesday.

Physics, I would like a 5 page report on how the laws of physics affects your everyday life.

Thank you and have a safe week. Avoid eating in the cafeteria and Locker 327.

Camulus is still in a foul mood. He strides into class, tosses worksheets at the students, and strides back out. The Gaelic sheets are more translations; the Arthurian Traditions sheets are really an assignment, 200 words on the Holy Grail in the three selections read so far. A note on the bottom screams in angry capitals that it is due next class.

[[Waah, sorry, two midterms tomorrow, no time! I swear I'll actually teach something next time.]]

Human geography #1

Keith has tacked maps of various sizes and locations on the walls.

What is a city? Why is a city? What are common features of where cities develop?

Many of the cities of the world today are based on sites with a long and varied history. Please look up the history of cities and discuss how it applies to your point of origin.

Consider the various common features of city site locations. Often cities will either be coastal and have a harbour or be situated near a river giving them an economic advantage, but what other factor are there? Where else might cities have developed?

Take a look at two cities of the ancient world - specifically the Maya and Inca, and their cities Chichén Itzá and Machu Picchu. Look at their surrounding geography, the main structures and their purposes, the inhabitants, the building materials, the general layout, and any other revealing information or artifacts from the city.

Incan )

Investigate these further and discuss how they compare with each other and with cities that you are familiar with.
Machu Picchu
Chichén Itzá

For next week choose another city and research its origins - ancient or modern? planned or organic?

Outside of Dr. Carter's classroom is a neatly handwritten sign which says:

Junior Achievers Meeting

All are welcome.

Tonight's topics include:

1) Parents/Family Weekend
a) JA Meet & Greet?
b) Bake sale?
C) Personal projects?

2) Student Council: Academic Affairs is open

3) Guest speaker: Callisto, on having a FH Fashion Show

4) Words of wisdom from Dr. Carter

5) Any new business

Free food provided.

The door to the classroom is wide open. Inside Angelus sits at one of the front desks. He is busy writing in his notebook. Anyone who peered over his shoulder would see words like "Master" and "slave" in his handwriting. He is also humming a cheery tune.

On Dr. Carter's desk is an open box of peanut butter cookies from Deb's diner. There is also a sign-in sheet.

"Following on from today's discussion, the debate topic next week will be this: 'Murder is never acceptable, regardless of the circumstance'. If you'd like to debate this topic, please volunteer below. I will assign people arbitrarily to affirmative and negative, and you will be expected to meet with your team over the course of the week to determine your argument. Opposition, please remember that the Affirmative defines the topic, and therefore what constitutes murder, and prepare your arguments accordingly. The professor comes into his classroom/kitchen. He's carrying a couple of packets of dried spaghetti and a big block of Parmaggiano.

He sets the pasta boiling, and walks over to another stove where the bolognaise sauce has been in stasis for a few days. He snaps off the slo-time envelope, and the room is suddenly filled once more with the warm smell of beef, of tomato, of basil and oregano. He stirs the pot, bends down and sniffs appreciatively.

*breep*

The professor looks round. Had he heard something?

silence

Apparently not. He dishes himself out a generous portion of pasta and sauce, and starts to shave some of the cheese over it.

*breep*

The professor looks up, wrinkles his forehead, and returns to his food. He takes the plate and places it on the table, and goes to hunt for a fork and spoon.

When he returns to the table, one strand of spaghetti has been dragged off the edge of the plate. His eyes follow the strand for a short distance across the table, where it terminates in -
