sailor_meshi: Senshi of Izganda from Dungeon Meshi (Fighting - High Alert Looking Around)

Senshi was waiting for them at their assigned classroom today, but only to inform them that all future classes would be held in the Danger Shop and to meet there in the future.

Once everyone had arrived, Senshi turned on the simulation he had painstakingly programmed with the help of Raiden and a lady in purple who had been a little brusque and high-falutin but had given him pointers on how to use it once she realized it was for a class. They were inside a large stone hall, with tall arches and spaces that looked like oversized shelves inset in the wall. It was full of talking people, merchant stands, people offering trade goods, advertising various services, even offering pop-up restaurants and beverage stalls. Even with the volume turned down low, so as to not interfere with the lesson, there was still a steady murmur. There were also large basins full of cool, clean water encircling many pillars, with a strict separation of basins used for cleaning and basins used for cooking and drinking. In all, it resembled more of an indoor flea market than anything one might call a dungeon.

I don't do short lectures, this is a fact. )

He dusted off his hands and nodded. "All right, I'm gonna give you a few minutes to poke at these examples here, just to get a feel for 'em, and then you're gonna catch one of each. And then we'll get to cookin'. Sound good?"

Oh, the plight of the modern, thriving woman, where one must be forced to choose between correcting a very terrible hair color mistake and making horrible vintage banana recipes for dramatic effect in class! Clearly, consummate professional that she was, Summer had elected to work on her recipes for class today rather than dying her hair, which she wouldn't have had enough time for anyway, but as soon as she was finished here, it was time to grab that bleach, baby! For now, though, she was really hoping everyone would be kind enough not to say anything about her brown hair and also that the bandage covering her incredibly itchy, good god, fresh ink between her shoulder blades would go unnoticed as well.

Doubtful, with at least one student in the class, but, hey, maybe the bananas would be horrible enough of a distraction?

"Welcome back, everyone," Summer said with a smile and a tilt of her head and another urge to scratch her back that was going to manifest in a twitch in that smile. "As you'd expect, today, we're going to go over two more horrible banana recipes. Well, the second one isn't too horrible, but we'll get into that in a second.

"Our first one brings us a classic combination. I know when you think banana, you think fish. And while this," Summer pulled the cloche from the first platter to reveal the dish in question, "isn't nearly as egregious as the sardine banana boats we've done in a previous class, there's just something about a salad that combines salmon and bananas together that makes you wonder...why? Were they actually onto something? Or were they maybe just on drugs? We'll be making it today and finding out!

"Additionally, naturally, the dressing on this salad calls for mayo and mustard, and I'll agree that the mayo makes sense with the salmon, but it's an interesting choice with the banana and pineapple. And, as mid-century as it feels, it does feel a little bland and unexpected. So today I'd like to throw in a challenge, too. What other dressings could you think of to toss into this salad? Either to genuinely improve it or to somehow make it even worse; we like to go both ways in this class."

Yes, she had to say it all like that, shh.

"And, secondly, we have Banana Pineapple Salad, which, as far as recipes go, isn't all that bad. It's honestly really simple and the flavors make sense. So what we're talking about today," and now she pulled back the cloche to reveal the banana-pierced pineapple rings on a bed of greens and berries, "is the presentation. Just like banana candles from last week, putting the banana through the pineapple rings feels very much like a choice, the exact kind of choice that we're looking to explore in this classroom.

"So, you should have everything you need to recreate these recipes; let's get started, and let's get talking."

"Let's talk sauce!" Raiden excitedly told his students today, because...why wouldn't he be excited? They were talking about pizza sauce! "Now, technically, you can use all sorts of things for your pizza sauce: there are white sauces, I've seen barbecue sauce, pesto...your earliest pizzas used olive oil, because they didn't have access to tomatoes in Italy yet. But when you're talking about your classic pizza experience, you're talking about a tomato-based sauce flavored with herbs and garlic."

Damn, he was getting hungry. Please hold while your teacher pulled out a giant bag of Cool Ranch Doritos, which he would be munching from for the rest of his intro today. "I picked out two options for you guys today as far as recipes. The first is a more classic recipe where you start with canned tomatoes and cook them down, but if you don't have time or feel like you have the cooking skills for that there's also a no-cook version. You can also, of course, start with fresh tomatoes, but they're not in season yet and it takes even longer, so I thought we could skip that option for now. The most important thing either way is to taste as you go and adjust your seasonings to achieve your version of pizza sauce perfection. And if you find yourself thinking, 'But Raiden, this is way too much sauce for one pizza,' that's the beautiful thing! You can freeze it! I would suggest in single-pizza servings, so you can just thaw one out any time you want to make pizza. So, pick what you're gonna do, and let me know if you need any help or have any questions."

"Welcome back," Lana told them all, smiling. "We're going a little further away today, though not much. I mentioned the country we're in is the United States. Just north of it is a country called Canada. We're going to a place just on the border between the two, called Niagara Falls. It's one of the largest waterfalls on Earth, and apparently quite an impressive sight."

She paused to hand out things. "We've got tickets on a boat that goes up close to the falls themselves - there are your tickets and waterproof ponchos. We'll probably still be getting quite wet, I should warn you. When the boat ride finishes, we can wander a bit and take a look at it from the land via an observation tower. There are also a welcome center, shops to buy touristy things at, and places to eat, if you're so inclined."

Their portal came up and she waved them through. "Let's go!"

"We've had a pretty quiet first week," Ender observed, sitting on a blanket in their usual spot on the lawn. "So we might as well continue on a theme we started on last week."

He reached for his bottle of water.

"Where we come from colors the way we look at the world," he said. "We take our principles with us. Along the way, we might lose some and gain others, but some bedrock will always remain."

He looked around the group. "What do you think your bedrock is?" he said. "And what is something you're surprised you lost along the way?"

Was there anything at all ominous in the fact that class was taking place in the preserve, and more specifically the part where paintball class had been held yesterday? Almost certainly, but perhaps you were too distracted by the fact both your teachers were human (and one of them was distinctly unhappy about it) to notice yet.

"Don't ask," Anakin said, rubbing his arm. "Just accept that Fandom is being very odd this week." Because he'd asked and gotten smacked. "Today we're going to explore preparing for the unexpected!"

Like waking up human! Definitely a thing that many of the students could relate to!

"The unexpected can take many forms," Ahsoka, who for some reason had felt absolutely no compunctions about letting Anakin's idea for class run wild today, said. "Like having to do laps on uneven terrain."

Uneven, booby-trapped terrain. Which they would not warn you about because then it wouldn't be unexpected! Jedi teachers were wild. "After you're warmed up, we'll work on punch techniques," Anakin said. "Some of you need work."

"Plus, everyone needs to practice, regardless of skill."

After you got yourself out of the booby traps! What a fun day you'll have.
