This Sh*t is Bananas; Tuesday, Third Period [05/21].

Oh, the plight of the modern, thriving woman, where one must be forced to choose between correcting a very terrible hair color mistake and making horrible vintage banana recipes for dramatic effect in class! Clearly, consummate professional that she was, Summer had elected to work on her recipes for class today rather than dying her hair, which she wouldn't have had enough time for anyway, but as soon as she was finished here, it was time to grab that bleach, baby! For now, though, she was really hoping everyone would be kind enough not to say anything about her brown hair and also that the bandage covering her incredibly itchy, good god, fresh ink between her shoulder blades would go unnoticed as well.

Doubtful, with at least one student in the class, but, hey, maybe the bananas would be horrible enough of a distraction?

"Welcome back, everyone," Summer said with a smile and a tilt of her head and another urge to scratch her back that was going to manifest in a twitch in that smile. "As you'd expect, today, we're going to go over two more horrible banana recipes. Well, the second one isn't too horrible, but we'll get into that in a second.

"Our first one brings us a classic combination. I know when you think banana, you think fish. And while this," Summer pulled the cloche from the first platter to reveal the dish in question, "isn't nearly as egregious as the sardine banana boats we've done in a previous class, there's just something about a salad that combines salmon and bananas together that makes you wonder...why? Were they actually onto something? Or were they maybe just on drugs? We'll be making it today and finding out!

"Additionally, naturally, the dressing on this salad calls for mayo and mustard, and I'll agree that the mayo makes sense with the salmon, but it's an interesting choice with the banana and pineapple. And, as mid-century as it feels, it does feel a little bland and unexpected. So today I'd like to throw in a challenge, too. What other dressings could you think of to toss into this salad? Either to genuinely improve it or to somehow make it even worse; we like to go both ways in this class."

Yes, she had to say it all like that, shh.

"And, secondly, we have Banana Pineapple Salad, which, as far as recipes go, isn't all that bad. It's honestly really simple and the flavors make sense. So what we're talking about today," and now she pulled back the cloche to reveal the banana-pierced pineapple rings on a bed of greens and berries, "is the presentation. Just like banana candles from last week, putting the banana through the pineapple rings feels very much like a choice, the exact kind of choice that we're looking to explore in this classroom.

"So, you should have everything you need to recreate these recipes; let's get started, and let's get talking."

What are your thoughts on salmon and banana together? Can you think of a better or worse dressing for the salad? Why did they have to present the banana like that?

All these questions, and more, hopefully to be discussed, or, at the very least, you can all amuse yourselves with recreating the recipes and maybe even trying them!

Stark made a face at the salmon dish but he'd had much worse with Summer before. He'd had frog jello last week!

The pineapple salad though he was having trouble keeping a straight face as he carefully assembled it.

"I think the salad could work," for a liberal, liberal definition of work, "with a Thousand Island dressing," Steve said. "Pickles and mayonnaise works with fish and maybe the stronger dressing would just mask the bananas?"

Steve, this was why you didn't really get to experiment in the kitchen.

Hannibal could see salmon and banana working well together, particularly with the pineapple. So, he cooked the fruit long enough to start it caramelizing before adding some vinegar and sugar. Then he seared the salmon, presented it on the celery, pickle, and lettuce, and poured the fruit dressing over it. The mustard and mayo were nowhere to be seen.

For the other salad, after he stuck the pineapple rings on, he carved the banana ends into little flowers and stuck a berry in each one.

"I'm fine," Summer assured Stark with a small smile, a hand ducking up behind her neck to rub it, although all the really wanted to do was scratch the hell out of the spot underneath the bandage. "So remember how we talk that one time about how I always wanted to get a tattoo but couldn't decide enough on anything to do it? Well. I finally decided. I got it last night, when I was in New York."

Stark looked at her curiously. Expectantly. Like he wanted to uncover that tattoo at the earliest possible opportunity.

"Does it hurt? You're all right? What is it?"

"Do you really want to know?" Summer asked, brows lifting slightly. "Or would you rather wait to just see it once I can take the bandages off? But no, it doesn't really hurt. I mean, not any more than you'd expect when someone's just injected a bunch of ink into your skin with electronic needles, anyway. It mostly just itches like a mo-fo right now."

Her nose wrinkled a little, her fingers curling and squeezing her hands into fists as if to distract her skin from said itchiness.

"I want to know," Stark said. "But I want to see it more than I want to know now. I can be patient."

He could be very patient. But Summer knew that. He reached for her hands then to wrap his own around them.

"Can I help? Is there something at the clinic that would help?"

When Stark took her hands in his, Summer couldn't help a faint smile, turning them so she could lace her fingers in his.

"Well," she said, "I do have to wash it carefully and keep it clean and I've got an ointment to help it heal better, but of course it's in a tricky spot to reach by myself, so you can help with that, if you want."

Sometimes he was too careful but Summer knew that too.

"And then I'll be able to get a very good look at it."

"I think you'll like it," Summer said with confidence, and not even because Stark would probably go along with almost anything she'd have gotten. "It's pretty cute. Which, you know, it's not like the brown hair where I can just change it back, so I wanted to make sure it was something I could definitely live with for the rest of my life."

There were some things that would have given Stark pause if they ended up tattooed on Summer's back. Not many, but some. But the likelihood of any of those being options was rather low. But if Summer had Scorpius on her back...

"It's your skin so as long you like it that's fine. But I look forward to seeing it. Later?"

Summer nodded. "Maybe when you're done with the gym, you can grab some food and come over? I'm not going in today because I have to be careful and not, like, strain it or get sweat on it or whatever. You can help me dye my hair back tonight to." A faint smirk. "If you want to."

Someone else would have made a joke about how he had dealt with every other sort of dying. Alas.

"Of course I want to help. Any requests for food? Or should I surprise you?"

"Mmmm," Summer took a moment to consider it. "Tacos, maybe? Or maybe..." She smirked a little. "I should just have you pick up burgers from Luke's or something."

No," Summer assured him with a soft smile, "I'm just giving you a hard time. I wouldn't make you do that. I'd actually like you to come back. Tacos sound perfect."
