Rory really, really, really, really missed the library.

Really.

Elliot looked like she was halfway between bouncing and running away in terror as she started her first class of the semester, and she kept wiping her hands on her slacks as if her palms were sweaty.

"Hi, people, welcome to human anatomy, which is the study of structures and systems of the human body,. If you didn't sign up for anatomy, you're in the wrong place. If you stick around without registering? You're volunteering to be dissected.

"I am Elliot Reid, which yes is a guys' name. Blame my dad. Call me Elliot or Dr. Reid. Doing the E.T. voice on Elliot will freak me out and earn you a detention. But basically, it's pretty easy not to get a detention in here - show up on time, don't miss more than three classes without letting me know, and don't be incredibly hugely obnoxious, and you're golden.

"I am passing around a couple of things. First, you have textbooks, which are yours to keep and love and put under your pillow. Second is my voice mail number. Call whenever. I'm also in my office Friday mornings, if you need me outside of class. You're also getting the class roster and syllabus. Syllabus is a guideline, not a rule -- it can change. Finally, my TA is John Dorian, so if you can't find me for something, talk to him."

Done with the preliminaries, she pointed to an area behind the rows of desks where seven-foot stretches of paper were taped to the floor, with buckets of markets between them. "To help make this class more visual, you're going to pair up and trace each other, and then we'll tape the drawings to the wall to fill in the body systems on as we learn them. But before you do that, I want to do some introductions. Say your name, your grade, and two interesting things about yourself. Starting with .... you." She closed her eyes and pointed randomly into the group.

The science lab looks like your standard high school science lab. Lab benches in two neat rows faced a larger lab bench and chalkboard at the front of the room. There was a large open space between the last lab bench and the back row of counters and cabinets that held the assembled detritus of science!. Various projects cluttered the counters lining the classroom. A large window was propped slightly open. Those who were a few minutes early got to witness Ms Frizzle's arrival, which involved two bounces, a spin, and finished with her standing on tiptoe on foot, pointing dramatically away with a lizard clinging to her shoulder.

Today, the Friz was wearing a dress covered in, well, science!. Test tubes, flasks, atoms, cells, mathematical constants, and even a couple of planets formed the print, and bacteriophages hung from her ears.

"Good afternoon, class!" she announced, striking another little pose as Liz scrambled down from her shoulder to the safety of the lab bench and collected a stack of papers. "Welcome to Science! I hope you're all as excited about this course as I am! My name is Ms Frizzle, and this is my assistant, Liz!"

Liz waved.

"Liz is handing around the syllabus for the course and as you can see, I haven't planned a lesson for us today! I always enjoy classes so much more when I know who I'm teaching, so time for a few introductions. I am Ms Frizzle, as I said. I used to teach at Walkerville Elementary School and I love teaching science! I'm a big fan of field trips and I hope you'll get plenty of hands-on experience in this class! My favourite thing about science is figuring out how things work!"

She bounced and spun in place before clasping her hands under her chin excitedly. "Your turn! I'm sure you're sick of introductions, but tell me your name, where you're from, your favourite thing about science and whatever else you want! Also, I'm in need of a teaching assistant! If you're interested, please speak to me after class!"

There was a large plate of tacos waiting by the door when the students came in. They were free to grab them, if they so chose.

"Buenos dias," El said. "Welcome to Guitar: The Musicians's soul. These days, I am known as El Mariachi. Often shortened to 'El'. You, however, may call me El Professor."

He cleared his throat and bowed his head ever so slightly. "I'm... rather afraid to say that I just recently got in from a research trip of this country's guitar playing and I have not had time to draw up a full syllabus on paper. In my mind, though," he said, tapping the side of his head with the hand with the brace on it, "I know exactly what we will be doing."

He took a few steps towards the class, his spurs and chains clinking with every one. "What we will be doing in this class is a complete, total, and in depth study of the guitar. Not just how to play it, but its history, where it came from, where it is going, its soul, the very core of its being. You may even choose to make a guitar of your own as a final project. But today, we will start with something simple. We will start with introductions. I want you to go around and tell me your name, your year, where you are from, what experience you have with guitars, and what you hope to get from this class."

Daisy hadn't done much to turn what had been the basic acting classroom into the film and lit classroom. There was still an oversized arm chair in the corner that served as her "desk", and there was still a fairly large, clear area in front of the semi circle of student desks. She had, however, had someone set up a projector and movie screen in the front.

"Right! Welcome to your first day of Film and Literature. I'm Daisy. Daisy Adair. Your teacher. I know, I know, I look too young to be a teacher, but it's true. I don't have any syllabus or anything for you, because I wanted to see what topics you would prefer to cover in this class. Anything that has both a print and film version (and, no, screenplays don't count) is fair game, so we're talking about movies made from books and short stories, books made from movies and TV shows, the anime/manga dichotomy, whatever catches your attention. Seeing as it's our first day, I thought we'd start out easy. Stand up, tell us your name, what you'd really like to study and discuss in class, and . . . oh, let's go for your favorite beverage. Go!"

When that had ended, Daisy stood back up from her arm chair. "Okay! Good job, people. You all have horrible taste. For the rest of class, I want you to pick a story, any story, and write a quick summary of how you would turn that story into a movie. For homework, pick one scene from that story and describe the movie scene in detail. Think costumes, camera angles, lighting, actors and actresses, the works. Have fun!"

[ooc: please meta things. Handwaviness is always acceptable.]

Grinning like a cheshire cat as she stood at the front of the room, Laura watched the students enter the classroom and sign in, then filter out to take seats. The SmartBoard behind her was illuminated, a navigation chart of her home star system visible. "Sign in and have a seat. We'll be getting started in just a minute. I'd like to give everyone a few minutes to get here."

Five minutes passed and she decided it had been long enough. There might be a few people left to straggle in -- it usually happened on the first day of classes as everyone tried to find new classrooms. Any latecomers would just have to miss a few things.

'Okay, we'll go ahead and get started...' )

The students were greeted with an empty classroom as they filed in.

Once everyone was seated... )

The Doctor didn't have desks in the classroom today.

He had little swatches of carpet. About 18 inches by two feet, rectangular. In various moddable styles and colors. He gestured as for the students to sit on these bits of carpet. After the opening bell rang, he smiled.

"This is Adventuring Survival Tactics," the Doctor said. "And the first adventuring sruvival tactic you need you learn is that those carpets EAT PEOPLE!"

He made spooky fingers.

"Okay, maybe they don't," the Doctor said. "But they could. One some strange planet. Now something else to keep in mind is what you are, in fact, capable of. So that's today. It's a getting to know yourself, and each other, exercise. You'll tell us all your name, what you think your greatest strength is, what you think your greatest weakness is, and the weirdest fact you can think to share about yourself."

He brushed off his jacket. "I'll begin. My name is The Doctor. My greatest strength is, of course, being as fantastic as I am. My greatest weakness is the very rare ocassion when I am overconfident. The strangest thing about me is that I've suffered eight circumstances that would normally have been fatal, but I live on." He nodded. "Your turn."

After everyone shared, he smiled and clapped his hands together. "Fantastic. Now then, you're welcome to talk with your fellow students about the following situation for the rest of the hour. No homework for the next week, because I'm nice like that. Now, discussion topic. What would you carry in your pockets if you knew you were going out into a dangerous place. No backpack, no. Pockets only. What're you bringing? Discuss."

He was a bit smug at that. He knew that no one else had dimensionally transcendental pockets.

Josh was yelling at a copy of the Washington Post when the students began arriving. He didn't seem to like George Bush.

Welcome to US Government. )

He sat down at his desk and pointed at random to a student. "You. Name, class, why you care about government."

[OOC: Once again, internetless work will prevent me from responding immediately. Talk amongst yourselves. Josh won't care :)]

Josh had his feet kicked up onto his desk when the Student Council arrived. "Greetings, minions," he said with a grin. "What did I miss?"

[OOC: Ping Josh in his thread for anything you want him to sign off on. Otherwise, talk amongst yourselves!]
