Adventuring Survival Tactics, Period 4, A Classroom, 4/12/07

The Doctor didn't have desks in the classroom today.

He had little swatches of carpet. About 18 inches by two feet, rectangular. In various moddable styles and colors. He gestured as for the students to sit on these bits of carpet. After the opening bell rang, he smiled.

"This is Adventuring Survival Tactics," the Doctor said. "And the first adventuring sruvival tactic you need you learn is that those carpets EAT PEOPLE!"

He made spooky fingers.

"Okay, maybe they don't," the Doctor said. "But they could. One some strange planet. Now something else to keep in mind is what you are, in fact, capable of. So that's today. It's a getting to know yourself, and each other, exercise. You'll tell us all your name, what you think your greatest strength is, what you think your greatest weakness is, and the weirdest fact you can think to share about yourself."

He brushed off his jacket. "I'll begin. My name is The Doctor. My greatest strength is, of course, being as fantastic as I am. My greatest weakness is the very rare ocassion when I am overconfident. The strangest thing about me is that I've suffered eight circumstances that would normally have been fatal, but I live on." He nodded. "Your turn."

After everyone shared, he smiled and clapped his hands together. "Fantastic. Now then, you're welcome to talk with your fellow students about the following situation for the rest of the hour. No homework for the next week, because I'm nice like that. Now, discussion topic. What would you carry in your pockets if you knew you were going out into a dangerous place. No backpack, no. Pockets only. What're you bringing? Discuss."

He was a bit smug at that. He knew that no one else had dimensionally transcendental pockets.

"Hi, I'm Pippi Longstocking. My greatest strength is... My... great strength! My greatest weakness is... My great strength actually. I think... I'm not sure what's weird about me... Um. I... roll my dough out on the floor when I make cookies at home, because it's the only place with enough space for all the dough. I don't do it here though, because there aren't wood floors in the dorms... Blech!"

"Hello" Ami waved nervously. "My name is Ami Mizuno and i am a freshman. My greatest strength... well, i am a good student" she finished lamely. "My greatest weakness i think is that i am very shy and nervous about talking to people. And as for weird... I am not sure. Nothing odd has ever really happened to me before coming here. Oh!" she said remembering "Back in Japan I went to Cram School after regular school. People here seem to think that weird."

"I'm Lana Lang. My greatest strength is probably that I'm really good at organizing and multi-tasking. My greatest weakness is, well... that I don't think I'm much good at anything else. Weirdest fact. Um... well, I was abducted and buried alive in a coffin by a shapeshifter disguised as my boyfriend who was actually already dead. The boyfriend I mean, not the shapeshifter. Though in a later season I was dating a guy who was actually dead, so..."

"My name is Alanna Trebond, um, hm. My greatest strength is that I'm good with a sword, mostly because I'm kind of fast. My weakness would have to be a hate of the cold. Something weird...I dragged along my friends from Fandom back to my home world for my Ordeal. No one died."

"I'm Pip Bernadette. I guess my greatest strength would be... my improvisational ability and fighting skills. My biggest weakness is probably my missing eye and blind side. Weirdest thing about me is... Neither of my parents are particularly tall, but people tend to describe me as 'impossibly tall'."

"I'm Nadia Santos. My greatest strength is that I can keep a secret, which is why I'm not going to say what my greatest weakness is. I guess my weird thing is that I'm the subject of a prophesy. But I'm not the one who's going to save or destroy the world. I'm the one who's got the information for whoever is going to save or destroy the world. Not that I know what that information is."

"I'm River Tam." She paused. Her strengths? Being psychic? Being able to beat up eight of her friends? Painting? Being considered crazy? Good at shooting? Talented at most things she'd tried? Good dancer? Which ones where weaknesses? Or weirdnesses?

River made a strange noise and attempted to hide under her carpet, which wasn't entirely successful. "Good at dancing," she mumbled. "Have a fiddle and a tentacled monster."

"Teddy Altman. Um, my greatest strength is my ability to shape-shift I guess. My biggest weakness is lack of experience. And the weirdest thing about me? Um..." Teddy paused because there was just so much to choose from. "The planet where I was, um, born was eaten by someone."

"I'm Z Delgado. My greatest strength..." was 'able to live on the streets' a greatest strength? "I'm very practical? And my greatest weakness, I guess, is that I let things get to me too much. And the weirdest thing about me is probably that I have superpowers because of a lab accident my parents were in. Although I'm not exactly the only one."

He had to think about that for a minute, and finally settled on, "I have trouble accepting that people sometimes help just because they can, and not for personal gain. Greatest weirdness..." He shrugged. "Maybe that I'm missing about a year's worth of memories."

"Hi there, I'm Dick Casablancas." says Dick. He paused for a second and tried to think of a strength and a weakness. "Um...I guess my greatest strength is that I don't let things bother me too much. And my greatest weakness is that I just say whatever I want, whenever I want."

Hum, weird thing. "Uh...I fell out of a second story balcony once and I didn't get hurt. And that's with no superpowers or anything."

Also, probably my greatest weakness," he admitted wryly. "As for something weird... I know what it's like to kiss someone that looks exactly like me."

"I'm Isabel Evans. I suppose my greatest strength is also my greatest weakness. I'm an alien. Which means I have some fun powers but it also means that if anyone finds out about me outside of Fandom, well, I'd be in trouble," she shrugged, having gotten used to the idea of Fandom being a safe haven. "As for weirdness? I have a huge Tabasco sauce addiction."

"I'm Stark. Um, greatest strength?" Not self-promotion, obviously. "Not sure. I'll think about it. Greatest weakness? I'm, er, not always exactly as sane as maybe I should be. And weirdest thing. Greatest weirdness. Well, I'm missing half my face. Everyone seems to find that weird. I'm used to it, but then it's my face."

And maybe the lack of a greatest strength would go unnoticed. Hey, an alien could dream, right?

The fact that She was smiling at the Doctor oh-so sweetly should tip him off that something was wrong. Or about to go wrong.
