Science! (Thursday, Period 7)

The science lab looks like your standard high school science lab. Lab benches in two neat rows faced a larger lab bench and chalkboard at the front of the room. There was a large open space between the last lab bench and the back row of counters and cabinets that held the assembled detritus of science!. Various projects cluttered the counters lining the classroom. A large window was propped slightly open. Those who were a few minutes early got to witness Ms Frizzle's arrival, which involved two bounces, a spin, and finished with her standing on tiptoe on foot, pointing dramatically away with a lizard clinging to her shoulder.

Today, the Friz was wearing a dress covered in, well, science!. Test tubes, flasks, atoms, cells, mathematical constants, and even a couple of planets formed the print, and bacteriophages hung from her ears.

"Good afternoon, class!" she announced, striking another little pose as Liz scrambled down from her shoulder to the safety of the lab bench and collected a stack of papers. "Welcome to Science! I hope you're all as excited about this course as I am! My name is Ms Frizzle, and this is my assistant, Liz!"

Liz waved.

"Liz is handing around the syllabus for the course and as you can see, I haven't planned a lesson for us today! I always enjoy classes so much more when I know who I'm teaching, so time for a few introductions. I am Ms Frizzle, as I said. I used to teach at Walkerville Elementary School and I love teaching science! I'm a big fan of field trips and I hope you'll get plenty of hands-on experience in this class! My favourite thing about science is figuring out how things work!"

She bounced and spun in place before clasping her hands under her chin excitedly. "Your turn! I'm sure you're sick of introductions, but tell me your name, where you're from, your favourite thing about science and whatever else you want! Also, I'm in need of a teaching assistant! If you're interested, please speak to me after class!"

Turtle Wexler

"I'm Turtle Wexler," Turtle said. "I'm from boring Westingtown, Wisconsin and I like science because...ummm..." Her nose wrinkled a bit. Saying that it was because it was a class her mother wouldn't complain about or that she could possibly learn to make explosives didn't seem like good ideas. "It's fun?"

"I'm Nova from Karakura, Japan."

He thought for a long time about what his favorite thing about science could be. Finally he decided, "Science created me."

He felt it was as good an answer as any.

"I'm Hikaru Hitachiin," He couldn't help but eye Turtle a few times as he spoke, "and I'm from Tokyo, Japan. I like Science because... I like knowing how things work?" He tapped his chin for a second. Yeah, that should be okay.. "Something interesting... I like spicy food."

This was Turtle, glaring at Hikaru the whole time and thinking about what made everything he said stupid.

"Sokka. From the South Pole." Sokka grinned. The lady was insane, but, well, she was insane for science.

"My favorite thing about science is..." Ancient astrolabes. Hot air balloons. Stink bombs. Boomerang aerodynamics. "...using it to do nifty stuff."

"You live at the South Pole? Ceremonial, magnetic or geomagnetic?" Didn't hurt to ask.

"I'm Mac, from Neptune, California," she said simply. "I like technology, and science is all kinda a part of that."

"I'm Valentine," Valentine began, as though that in itself should suffice, but he was going to humor the class by adding the rest anyhow. "I come from nowhere in particular, really. I'm something of a traveler. I don't know if I love science here yet-- where I come from everything is different. Most things don't much care to obey whatever this 'law of gravity' thing is that people here keep talking about. Oh, and this is my real face, before anyone else asks."
He quirked his head thoughtfully, then gave a satisfied nod.

That should do.

"I'm Alphonse Elric," he said, sounding a bit chipper. "I've always loved and studied science, and I'm always willing to learn more about it. As where I'm from, um... Nowhere near here."

"I'm Lucas Wolenczak," Lucas said, pronouncing it 'Wolencheck', "I used to live on a submarine called SeaQuest in the year 2019." It was more interesting than saying he was from Buffalo, and apparently the year was important here. "And science...I like everything. What's not to like? There's always something to do, some answer to be found, something to be built. I like the discovery."

"My name's Armony Eiselstein," Armony said, and glanced at Alphonse. "...I'm from the same place as Al, and I'm still kinda confused as to where 'here' is in relation to there..." She frowned. "...I'm here because I like science, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it to help my dad."

Turtle was still a little wide-eyed about the teacher at the end of class; except for the whole being little and a redhead, the resemblance was...almost disturbing. There were no crutches, but Turtle had to ask. She just had to.

"This might sound like a weird question, Ms. Frizzle, but you're not Polish, are you?"

Please, please don't let her science teacher be Sydelle Pulaski Lite. Please, please, please.

To make this...Science with an exclaimation point more exciting than 'the science class that failed' last semester, perhaps he needed to get a little more involved. So, after class, Hikaru made his way over to Ms Frizzle to ask about that teacher's assistant spot.

"Unless you have someone else in mind, I'm interested in the teacher's assistant....job...thing." He offered, not really sure how to approach something he'd never done before.

Lucas wasn't so much for the talking, but he did stick around to watch Liz. Liz seemed as intelligent as Darwin, but with legs.
